Hi, Max and I are new to the Tripawd community.   Max my 8 year old pug was diagnosed with Spindle Cell Sarcoma in his right hind leg just a few weeks ago.   This is where his journey begins.  Max had is amputation surgery today and he's out of surgery and resting.  The Dr said all went well.

I have a question for anyone who has already gone through this process...What do I need to purchase from the local drug store for cleaning his wounds and bandaging... if necessary... his war woundquestion  Is that something that i need to be concerned aboutquestion

no need to be concerned there as long as you keep Max's battle scar clean. For rear-leggers, especially a tri-pug, you could use an old pair of small briefs to keep the incision covered, but it does need to breathe. Don't be alarmed if it bruises, or develops a seroma and leaks.

Welcome and best wishes for Max's complete speedy recovery. Your future posts will publish without requiring moderation now. Be sure to bookmark Jerry's Required Reading List for the best recovery tips and care advice.

PS: Consiider adding a link to Maxwell's blog in your Forums Signature from your Profile (see button at top right). While yourther you can add more information to let members know about you and Max.

Glad to hear the surgery went well. Our Abby had a front leg amp and we never needed to clean it. It drained a lot (so we kept her in old tshirts and tank tops), but we never touched or bandaged the wound itself. The recovery weeks are tough, but Max will be up and around and amazing you very soon!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Hi Lisa,

Maggie came home without a bandage (left rear amp), we were also lucky that no seroma developed (especially since she had developed seromas each time on two prior surgeries).  I never covered her incision, I just made sure it stayed clean.

Be sure you ask the vet what he/she recommends when you pick Max up .

I never had my Sasha's leg covered as well. Just made sure it was healing and stayed clean.

Welcome to the family. We never covered Gus' incision, he was a left front.Like Jerry said, it needs to breathe, keeps things dry, plus I liked it that I could watch the incision heal and make sure nothing was happeneing that looked suspicious. The one thing our vet told us wa to make sure he didn't become to active too quick, it could cause a fluid buildup( seroma ) and possibly have to drain it. Good luck, if you need any advice, this is the place to be, Paws up, Spirit Gus andf Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Welcome Max! Chloe was diagnosed with Spindle Cell Sarcoma almost 1 year ago and tomorrow we will be celebrating her 10 month ampuversary.

Where was the tumor?  Chloe had it on her left hind hock and biopsy of her knee lymphnodes indicated that her cancer hadn't spread past the tumor area.  So she didn't need to go on any sort of chemo or radiation regimen.    If that is the case for you, the recovery is only half the battle! Just be sure to have a pawsitive attitude around Max so that he knows everything is OK.  Chloe was fortunate to fly through the critical 2 week post op with flying colors.  Like I said, part of that is the fact that she didnt have to deal with chemo.  She was technically cancer free.

Feel free to check out her blog (there is a link in my signature box below!).  If you want to read about what she and I went through the days right after her surgery, here is the link (as opposed to searching through archives).  I also have a summary of events (but only a couple pictures in the page Chloes post-apawtee story.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

-Chloe's mom

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog
