Hi, My name is Becky, I am JoJo's mom. JoJo was attacked by another dog and her front leg was pretty mangled. She had to have her leg amputated Monday 12/17/12. She is doing great. Pain is under control, she has started eating normally and using the restroom also. I do have some concerns as for waht to expect in the future. I found this site and am hoping for some great advise....

Welcome to the group you didn't want to find.  I am sorry to hear about JoJo being attacked by another dog.  I am glad that you did find us and that JoJo is doing well.  Alot of us here have had dogs that needed amputation due to Cancer which was our case.  Sassy is a rear amputee so I don't know what to expect for a front amputee.  Welcome and come to the chat anytime :)

Welcome to Tripawds.

Tell us more about JoJo- what kind of pup?  How big is she, how old?

Do you have specific questions we can help with?

If you haven't already you should read through Jerry's required reading list. Lots of good info there on amputation and recovery.

Check out the featured blogs too- info there on gear, foods and diets, exercise and games and more.

Hey Becky and Jojo!
I am dealing with something completely different, but I do know that this community is a place to be in your situation. Lots of loving, knowledgeable folks here. People who do care.
I just thought about Socks - her pawrents post on forum here, she's a front amputee since Dec.10th - check her out, maybe it'll give you some ideas.

Thanks for all warm welcomes... JoJo is a Chihuahua mix, female. She weighs 8 lbs after the amputation... She has some mental challenges as well. I rescued her when she was 8 months old.... She will be turning 9 next week.... She is like a little tazmanian devil, always on the move... As fast as she can go....

Some of my comcerns are... How long should I keep still? I do let her walk around to potty and get some exercise. More now that thewy put a bandage on her. Before that the incision was open... Her incision began to open, I had to take her back to the vet Monday and then again today...She should get her stictches out Sat.... How soon did any of you keep your pup away from the pups in your house???? I have 9 other dogs....You can imagine how bad she wants to play now...I am just worried about her hurting herself...I have ordered some books and done some online reading to get advice on caring for a tripawd.....

Generally Tripawds are only allowed leash-walking for everything, for at least the first 10 days. All dogs are different and some recuperate faster than others so you'll need to judge whether or not she can handle anything more, but in general you do want to keep her subdued for at least that long.

I can't answer your second question since I was an only dog, so I'll defer to members with multiple pets. If you check out our "Hopping Around" forum, you'll find stories about multi-dog households, just search for "siblings".

So sorry you had to find us here and so sorry to hear she was attacked!

Since she is so small, she should do quite well on 3 legs. For our Abby she needed about 2 weeks to recover from the surgery, and then we started going on very short walks at first. It took her a while to build her stamina back up. She never did like to wrestle much again after her amp, unless it was with a dog that was very gentle, but she loved to go on walks and to race around. She was VERY speedy on 3 legs. Once your girl gets her stamina back, she should be good to go, but don't be surprised if she maybe plays a little more tentaively with the other dogs.

She's a cutie! Keep us posted on how she's doing.

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
