Hi Fancy's dad,

She is a beautiful girl, and obviously love what she does.  I bet after she is all healed up she will be back at it- maybe with a bit of a modified pace... you'll have to let her tell you how much she can do.

That surgery does look pretty ugly...

I really enjoy watching dogs do what they love.  I don't have any experience with hunting dogs, but my uncle in Montana has a blue heeler mix that just LOVES to work cattle.  That dog is a wonder to watch.

I have pugs- not exactly working dogs, unless you consider finding just the right nap spot work.

Maggie was a rear amp- she got back to doing just about everything she could do before, except going up stairs, or getting up on furniture.   But that was really a function of how little she was- only about 12" at the shoulder- so she had to jump her body height for each stair.  After her amp she built up to walking a mile or more on her own- up and down hills.  And she was an older girl, she was 11 when she passed, so a mile on short pug legs was really good.

I hope the ortho vet can get you on the right track.  Keep us posted on her progress.

Charlie's parents are Mickey Golden Light and R and R's Thunder Taurus, which sounds like a DWI waiting to happen...

Seeing some of the names in his pedigree is hilarious. What's better is seeing that many are older than me. big-grin

Welcome to the site! She's a beautiful girl!

My bad. Clearly a poor choice of words based solely on not seeing any pictures and my complete lack of knowledge about purebred dogs.

We all want what is best for Fancy. Thank you for sharing the photo so others know what an amputation surgery should not look like.

===I just tried to post this and lost it, so if it ends up being a duplicate, that's why===

Hi Hoss - I'm looking forward to seeing Fancy back in the water. I bet it won't take long at all and you'll be surprised how quickly she bounces right back. Lincoln was literally in the water the day his staples were removed. It didn't phase him in the least that he was minus a leg. We made him wear a life jacket at first (well, I did...his Dad was less enthused). Then, ahem, my gem of a dog snuck down to the lake and took a couple of unauthorized and unsupervised swims on his own just to prove he didn't need the vest.

He hasn't worn it since, and honestly doesn't need it. The only difficulty he has is if the shore is rocky and slippery, however he still resists assistance...a boy through and through (no offense to all you men out there). 🙂 Honestly, were Lincoln a working dog, I'm sure he would not have any trouble at all.

Anyway, keep us posted. Good luck with the next surgery. I'm sure she'll be back at it in no time.

Fancy is beautiful.  You will be surprised at how well she will do on three legs.  Of course she is still going to want to swim and hunt.  Once she heals, she will be running around with all her lab buddies.  Stay positive in Fancy's presence.  Our Buddies really feed off of our emotions.  If you are happy, she will be happy.

Hey Hoss, welcome to the family. Gus was a left front amp, but once he healed he was doing everything as before. We live on a farm and he was climbing hay mows, jumping up in the bunk, trucks and wagons and roaming the fields just like he did before surgery, he even made sure the cattle knew he was still boss, so once your buddy heals, you will be amazed how she gets back to her routine. Good luck with your second vet, Paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Gus looks like a fine dog sorry u lost him to soon..Thanks for the encouragment..

I talked to the vet and Fancy made it out of surgery ok. It took longer than he anticipated. The infection was up in the muscle that the first so called vet wrapped around the femur tip. She bled alot but not an alarming amount. they are giving her fluids and will keep her overnight for observation and recovery. being under so long is hard on them. I will bring her home tomorrow take some pics and post.

Thank God shes awake and made it thru this a second time. I will enjoy all the babyn and lovens shes going to get. Thanks to all of you who are following her in this and have her in your minds eye.

Good news on Fancy!  Starting tomorrow her general trend will be towards full recovery.  Some days will be good, some not so good, but...the eventual outcome will be that you have the same Fancy back; she will just weigh a little less than she did before.

We know what you mean about her being your kid.  Most all of us think the same of our "kids."

You will see when you pick her up tomorrow.  She will probably come hopping through the door, wagging her tail.  Keep us posted.

Hoss,

Good news that Fancy made it through the surgery, again.

Rest up tonight while she is in capable hands- as you know already the first few days after surgery are emotional and exhausting.

It is good to know that you can look forward to a full recovery, and having your girl back to her old self soon.

On the business side- you might consider posting your next update in the Treatment and Recovery forum, or which ever one makes the most sense to you.   That way you could put a new title like 'Fancy Home from Surgery' and let people know where you are on this journey.  Of course if it is easier for you, you can keep this thread running as long as you like.
