Hello.  My name is Lydia and I am the mom of a 13 year old greyhound, Dee Dee (or Deeds, as I call her).  Deeds is  obviously elderly for a greyhound.  A week ago, we noticed her limping and dragging her left front leg.  Went to the vet a week ago tomorrow, did x-rays, found osteosarcoma with a severe fracture by her shoulder.  Was given the option to amputate or euthanize her.  We chose amputation.  Her chest x-rays were clear as of last Monday.

Amputation was performed last Tuesday.  Deeds was exteremely groggy afterward but I assumed it was normal.  I am usually totally OCD about researching anything, but the dx and surgery happened so quickly, I think I was (and still may be) a little in shock and did a lousy job on finding out what was going on outside the vet's abbreviated comments.  Wednesday AM came and I got a panicked call from the vet's office saying Deeds was 'down'.  My immediate reaction was "ummm....if you had your leg cut off, wouldn't you be down, too?" .  I  went there ASAP and Deeds was acting very medicated, but lifted her head in greeting.  The head vet later confirmed to my husband that Deeds was indeed overmedicated Tuesday evening.

Deeds only received IV fluids while at the vet's and mediocre attempts were made to force-feed her recovery gruel.  I noted on my frequent visits that her mouth and tongue seemed very dry.  I now feel like a crappy mom, as I should have asked why this was so. She started sitting up a little.  They released her on Thursday evening to us.  She was carried out to our truck.  The care sheet was scant at best- keeping her from running up and down the stairs for a month ( I find this ironic, as it is a struggle to get her to stand at this point).  I had gotten Deeds a transdermal pain patch which the vet applied before her release.

When we got her home, I suggested that we try to let her walk to her bed.  Deeds immediately fell down.  My husband picked her up and carried her to her bed.  I had at least had the foresight to purchase training pads to place on her bed, and that was great, as Deeds has only gotten up once to use the toilet away from her bed.  I can't tell the urine from the feces- everything is very liquidy.  Since she hadn't eaten in almost a week, that doesn't concern me, but what I AM worried about is that she is passing some blood (very watery).  The vet is unconcerned about this, but I am.  🙁

I am cooking some chicken and liver for her and she is eating this fairly well.  She is also drinking well.   There was a happy surprise this morning when she got up unassisted and went out of the garage to sit in the driveway.  I cried, I was so happy.

I feel that the vet TOTALLY blew off giving us a realistic picture of what post-surgery care would be.  I have lost faith in this office and will start working on finding a new vet tomorrow.  In the meantime, any feedback regarding her progress so far is welcome.  I feel as if we are flying blind at this point and hope we made the right decision for Deeds.  Thanks in advance- you don't know how much I appreciate any comments.

Welcome and thanks for joining, your future forum post will not require moderation.

We're sorry to hear about the trouble Deeds is having. Do you have the opportunity to seek another opinion for follow up visits? Anywhere near a vet teaching hospital? Just seems odd that Dee Dee was overmedicated and then they gave you a Fentanyl patch on top of that. That stuff is like Morphine for dogs.

How is she "passing blood"? If it's coming from the incision site, it is likely a seroma leaking fluid which is common if they did not insert a drain. If it is in her stool it could be a potentially dangerous NSAID reaction. What is she on?

Consider checking Deeds' circulation regularly too. Greyhounds are known bleeders. You can press on her gums and color should come right back.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Please keep us posted.

i have a lurcher (greyhound saluki cross) front amputee too due to OSA. Her recovery was ok, sighthounds can react differently to the anesthetic and take longer to come round, as already said they are also known bleeders. don't forget greyhounds are lazy dogs and resting is good for them to begin with as for not letting them run up the stairs for a month Dizzy was up the stairs unassisted in 3 days and down in 5 days. As for the bleeding I would be asking a vet for their opinion. Welcome to the site.

Dizzy diagnosed with osteosarcoma 24 may 2011 amputated same day doing fine hopping around on three legs giving the neighbourhood cats what for

Thanks for the welcome.  I am in central NM, about 40 miles to the east of Albuquerque.  I am going to find another vet tomorrow, even if that means going to ABQ for someone to see her.  I am NOT pleased with the care she is receiving.  I'll check to see if there is a teaching hospital here.

The only thing Deeds is currently on is the Tramadol patch and Rimadyl...which is an NSAID.  Bingo.  You rock.  Glad someone who knows what they are dog read my post.  I will discontinue the Rimadyl now and keep you updated on Deeds' progress.  If anyone can recommend a vet in the Albuquerque metro area, that would be much appreciated.  Thank you!!!!!!

Welcome! We are sorry to hear that Deeds is having some complications. Good for you for being on the ball and recognizing that she may need additional care. I agree that seeking a second opinion or new vet may be a good option for you all.

My Bo is a 6 year old lab who is 2 mo. post-amp; front left from OSA, too. He was on an NSAID for 6 days before surgery. We were told if we saw any blood in his stool to contact the vet immediately. He didn't have any, but his liver levels were elevated at surgery (most likely caused by the NSAID), so we went from giving him 2 pills a day to 1 a day for two days, then discontinued them all together. Our vet wanted to make sure we weened him off so he didn't have a withdrawal reaction. But, in your case, stopping may be the best since she is having a more severe reaction. Bo was on VetriLiver Chews for one month to help his liver, and we just had his blood checked last week and the levels are back to normal.

We are sending pawsitive thoughts to you all for a safe recovery! Keep us posted!!

OH Deeds, please feel better soon. I know you Greys are soooo sensitive to surgeries and anesthesia. Please check out Brody's story, he had a similar ruff start and is still doing GREYT!!!

And YES! We have a FABULOUS place for you to receive care. Get there asap, they are wonderful.

Santa Fe Veterinary Cancer Care

The incredible docs treated me when I was diagnosed and thanks to their progressive thinking and super excellent care, I beat the osteo odds for 2 years! These blog posts all talk about our interactions with them. Please go there and let them know that Jerry of Tripawds sent ya!

P.S. Momma, you are NOT a bad pawrent OK? There are SO many of us who have been through this and gotten whiplash from having to make such fast decisions. Many vets provide little direction after surgery, you are not alone, but that's why we're all here OK?

Please keep us posted.

Thanks for all the replies.  Jerry, I will indeed be in contact with the center in SF.  I did not give Deeds the Rimadyl this evening and she doesn't seem to be in pain, so that is good.  Also, thanks for the info on greyhounds and bleeding.  I had no idea- up to now, Deeds has lived a charmed life and we never had any problems with her.   I am just happy to have whatever time we have left together.  And I really appreciate the concern you all have shown...I feel much better about facing this with Deeds now that we know we aren't alone.  🙂
