Denali is not yet a tripawd, but things aren't looking good for her to keep her left back leg.

I have wanted a great pyrenees since I was a little girl.  After getting my house, I volunteered at a shelter to get some experience handling dogs and waiting for the perfect time.  Denali came along in Feb 2005 (born Dec 2004).  After she was about a year and a half, we got her a pyrenees friend - Loki from rescue.  Denali has helped me through some very tough times and has just always been there for me.  She's not a typical pyrenees - she loves life and everybody and everything in it.  It's very rare that she not approach anything with tail held high and wagging.

June 2nd 2010 - the door bell rang and Denali went sliding across the floor.  After that she had a slight limp.

June 9 and morning June 10 2010 - the limping appeared to have went away.

Evening June 10 2010 - I came home and she had diarrhea and was back to limping.  I gave her a bath - no noticable swelling.

June 15 - While getting ready to leave for work, I noticed Denali didn't want to put weight on her leg.  Made vet appointment for next day.  When I got home I noticed the swollen spot her her rear left leg.

June 16 - Vet Suspected Osteosarcoma

June 17 - Bone Biopsy done and sent away.  95% sure that she has Osteosarcoma but I need to be 100% before amputating and starting chemo treatment.  Lung x-ray clear.

Myself - she's my baby (along with Loki and my other animals) and I'm not doing too well since this horrible thing has started.  I have been crying lots for her.  Denali has been sleeping more than normal as her leg bugs her.  She's never been a great eater - so I've been adding wet food to her dry food, but it looks like I'm going to need to change her diet and have no idea what to do for her diet.  She's been drinking fine and peeing and pooping as normal.  She's tried to greet my guest as she normally does and is in pretty good spirits besides her leg bothering her.

Welcome to the family, by the sound of it you are looking for advice, you have come to the right place. We have all been down that part of the road you are now entering. Gus had his left front off in april, so I can't give you advice for experience with a back wheel coming off, but the first two weeks after the surgery will be your toughest, for both you and the dog. Gus had trouble with phantom pain , about five days after it started, and the first few times will be pretty gut wrenching, some dogs have trouble with it, some don't, but it gets better with time, by 4 weeks he was pretty well back to normal. He also had trouble with a drug called tramadol, once we took him off that he did better. The way I looked at it was what will give Gus the best quality of life which is what you should base all decisions on for Denali. I opted to not do chemo, although we have now started him on a program called metronomics therapy, which is a low dose chemo, but he hasn't had any side effect yet and the cost is financially better for our situation. I have no regrets on the way we have done everything so far. Gus has been happy once those first two weeks were under our belt, but we have had a coupe bumps in the road since, but I wouldn't do anything different. You know your dog best, Gus had a clear x-ray on his chest also, and his biopsy came back negative, but we felt he had cancer and proceeded with that in mind but we found out about three weeks ago he now has it in his lungs, which was the reason for starting the cytoxin, so my suggestion would be don't wait, have the surgery and try to whip this crap as early as you can. you might feel guilty for putting her through it after the surgery, it is a stressful time, probably more for you than the dog, but some dogs handle the surgery better than others, so be comfortable with your decision, no time for second guessing. Don't be afraid to ask anything here, this is a wonderful family that only those of us that have been down the road know and understand all that goes with the whole process, and experience gives the best answers, Good luck, Gus and Dan

I'd like to welcome you to the group, but wish you didn't have to be here under these circumstanes.  You will likely be tearful until you have all the facts, and necessary research to make an educated decision on treatment based on what is right for you and Denali.  Obviously, most of us here chose amputation - many of us have done chemo. We all know how torn you feel right now, and we all know how very difficult it is to make the decision to amputate.

Make sure you have 100% faith in your vet, if you don't, get a second opinion.  Then decide what is best for Denali - you are the only one who knows.  Osteosarcoma is not an easy journey, but with the support of the wonderful folks here, it is easier than trying to make it alone.

Best of luck to you and Denali.  Keep us posted on your status, and ask all the questions you can think of.  Someone will be around to answer.

Aw, Denali. So sorry to hear about the possible diagnosis of osteosarcoma, but I think you and your mom will be glad you found this site. I understand your heartache; been there with our Catie who lost her right front leg on January 13.

Armed with xrays from our own vet, we saw the specialist/surgeon on December 28. From examining all the xrays he was almost 100% certain she had osteosarcoma. Because we too wanted to be sure before we proceeded with what we thought at the time a barbaric and mutilating procedure - the dreaded amputation - we asked for a bone biopsy. It came back cancer free. The surgeon was stumped and suggested he could do another one. We allowed that one too; that procedure showed definitive cancer cells. The two biopsies we submitted Catie to were the only procedures, looking back, that I regret; added to the pain from the cancer, the biopsies only greatly added to her discomfort.

I don't regret proceeding with Catie's amputation at all. I won't say it was an easy decision to make but once we had committed to it, I felt at peace. The ambivalence of what to do was soul draining. The wisdom and open-hearted support I found on this site helped me immensely, as it will you.

Having faith in your vet is very, very important.

It's not an easy journey but so many of us have gone through exactly what you're experiencing right now as you struggle to comprehend this unexpected turn on Denali's path.

Sending many warm wishes and hoping for cancer-free result from the biopsy. In the meantime, hang in there. Please keep us posted.

Hi Denali's mom or dad,

I know this has all hit you like a ton of bricks, so much to learn and so many decisions to make- all of them hard.

My advice at this point is to take a deep breath and step back for a moment or two.  You do need to make some decisions very soon, but you don't have to make them all right now.

Focus on getting a diagnosis and deciding on an immediate path forward. Educate yourself right now on OSA and amputation in big dogs. There is a ton of good information on this site; Jerry's Reading list,  posted by Admin, is a good place to start.  If you're like most of us, you're probably not sleeping much since the diagnosis, so you might as well put that time to good use!

Ask lots of questions and discuss all your options with your vet- then decide if amputation is the right way to go.  After that decision then think about what post amp treatments Denali will need, what you want to do, what you can afford, and just as important to have clear in your mind- what you are not willing to do.

Don't worry about her diet right now, keep her eating so she is as healthy as she can be going into surgery.  You can look at her diet after things settle down in a couple of weeks- many pups don't eat much post surgery- you may have to feed her what ever she will eat.  Once healed up you can look at a long term change.  Same thing goes for supplements- you have a little time to decide on those.

It is clear that you love Denali and want the best for her.  As long as you make your decisions with her best interest in your heart you can't be wrong.  Everyone here will support you and help you with whatever path you choose for your girl.

I actually think Karen's advice to wait on the diet is a great suggestion.  One of the things our vet asked was that we not change anything during the chemo.  He did not want the added guesswork if something wasn't quite right of trying to decide if it was the chemo or some other change we had made.  it made perfect sense to me, and I respected his wishes.

Denali's Mom:

I am glad you found this site before Denali has surgery; I did not find the site until after Rusty's surgery, as we did not have time for research before having to make the decision to amputate.  You will receive a lot of helpful advice from member's who have been there, as you see above.  I hate to keep pushing my blog, but if you want to see what you and Denali will be facing please read http://rusty.tr.....pawds.com/

Rusty is a Labradoodle who was diagnosed with level 3 Fibrosarcoma on January 16th, 2010 and had his left hind leg amputated on January 25th, 2010 five days before his 18 month birthday. Please see Rusty's blog @rusty.tripawds.com.  He is putting up one heck of a fight against this terrible disease.

Welcome to our family and I hate that you have to be here.  I was grabbed by Denali's name!  I had a wolfdog whose aunt's name was Denali…so now we are almost related.   (and the people who had THAT wolfdog had a dogdog named Loki!!)   And we are related through these awful circumstances.  My wd Magic was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left front leg in March and lost the awful cancer ridden piece of flesh on March 11th, freeing him from that agonizing bone cancer pain.  Unfortunately, we did get lung mets five weeks out and he also now has it in at least one of his kidneys (and probably the other since his cancer is unfortunately very aggressive and responded to none of the various chemos).

I am sure Denali is huge, probably bigger than Magic who went into surgery at 114 pounds and has lost quite a bit of weight since (some of which was weight we have been trying to take off)….please if you do nothing else, get a Ruffwear Harness or another like it (although I love the Ruffwear…but have nothing to compare it with) to help you help her after the surgery.  Check with your vet to find out when you can use it…many vets say after stitches come out, my vet said go ahead and use it when you get it, but the incision in our case was wrapped so there was no rubbing on the actual incision.  This harness allows you to give them a bit of help in and out of vehicles, up and down stairs, maybe getting up in the very beginning.

I noticed you mentioned Denali went sliding across the floor…the next absolute must have are non skid runners for the pathways she travels …. it is likely she will be able to gain her footing on smoother flooring after she has had some practice (I have runners at home everywhere there is not carpeting, but Magic seems to do fine at the vet on the lino floors)

As someone mentioned, the first two weeks are hell weeks and do keep an eye on how she does on tramadol as some of us have had not great experiences with that pain med but there are others to switch to if need be.

the thing to remember, tattoo it on your forehead (backwards so you can read it in the mirror), embroider pillowcases, paint it on the walls….the dogs do fine on three legs….us people are the ones who have a bit of trouble adjusting.  I didn't see how an 11 year old, fairly sedentary wolfdog who would rather snooze than play these days and   whose exercise was our daily hour walk could possibly make it with three legs.  Boy did he prove me wrong.  Prepare to be amazed at your dog's ability to go, hmm, I'll just move this leg here and that leg there and off we go.

We like pictures  so we can put a face with a name, so will eagerly await those.  And remember, almost all of us have been where you are now (except for accident victims and Comet who was born with a non functional leg) so when we say we KNOW what you are going through, trust us, we do.  Ask questions, read everything on here you can read, don't get overwhelmed but ask many many questions.  Tripawds saved my sanity when Magic and I started this journey and bless each and every one of them, they will hold your hand and paw as you walk the same path.

I'm Denali's mom (And Loki's mom, and Merlin (cat), Morgan (cat), Hershey (guinea pig), Moo (guinea pig), Oreo (guinea pig) and Shu (guinea pig)'s mom - she doesn't have a dad.  My boyfriend is over here quite often though and helps me out quite a bit.  That's where it gets me too is that I am single income - however my parents have offered to help me out (financially and emotionally) and I'm very thankful that they love their little grand-dog!

Denali weighs in around 85lbs.  She's 5 1/2 years old - born on Christmas 2004.

wow, thanks for such great pictures!! that's alot of white fur to rangle!!!  welcome to the site, although we all wish we 'didn't have to be here'...but it's a great place for info/support, etc.  i second what diane said about the ruff wear harness - even with a front amputee it helps tremendously getting in/out vehicles, stairs, etc.  prepare for the two weeks of hell after surgery.  but remember, that too will pass.  paws crossed for the best possible outcomes and recovery!!
