Unfortunately this is our nightmare from November 2017. Then our dog Skip was bitten by a 'fighting' dog. After a violent brawl, we took Skip severely injured to an orthopedic surgeon. This surgeon has done everything possible to treat Skip well. Various operations performed, because the healing process yet went different than expected. What is now clear is that deep in his hind leg is still a bacterium active, which can not be stopped with anti biotics. So now the option of complete amputation of the hind leg. I would like to read more information and stories from fellow dog owners with a dog with 1 hind leg how to deal with a dog with 1 hind leg. Good to know Skip is an energetic 6 year old Border Collie. I also want to know how vulnerable a dog can be in this situation. What consequences does this have on his other legs / joints? Can he play again and run behind a ball or frisbee?

in short, like stories and tips and advice.

Okay, not sure how my typos will translate  through  Google, but here goes!

Your Spike sounds like he's  ready for that bum leg to be gone so he can get on with living  life to the fullest!  You are making the right decision!  We do see this happen  when everything  is done to save a leg and it just isn't  meant to be.

Amputation is one surgery, one recovery  and then onward and upward.  Sure, it is major surgery  and recovery  is rough for a couple of weeks, but we're  here to help you navigate  through  that.

And yes, Spike absolutely can continue to chase his ball and play frisbee, but  with some adjustments,   such as  throwing  the frisbee lower to the ground so there isn't  too much high jumping that can cause stress on his joints.

We have many tripawds who participate in athletic events, agility, etc.  Cow Girl Dog Magfie, Novak are two who come to mind, as well as tripawd  Maggie who does nosework qnd some agility for fun.

Just wanted  to touch base quickly  and let you know we are here for you and to let you know Spike will thrive  as a tripawd!!!

Hugs

Hello Yvonne and Skip,

i am afraid I don’t speak Dutch but I thought there was a good chance you spoke German.
