A couple weeks ago i was approached by a friend about an 11 week old boxer puppy that lost a front leg to bone cancer at about 5 weeks old and needed a family to love her. We meet her and fell in love and now we have our sweet Olivia Hope at home. I find myself on overly cautious when she is outside playing with our Weimaraner (17 months old) running, hopping, and being a puppy. Due to her age and size we hand carry her up and down stairs ( we live in a split level home) and watch her for fatigue. Any advice or exercises we can do to help her i would gladly accept. She is so sweet, gentle, but full of energy and want to ensure I am doing whats right by this little sweetheart. Thank You for reading.

A "couple weeks" is still very early to be rough-housing and running around, especially for a young pup still developing growth plates.

You definitely want to focus on building core strength and muscle mass in remaining limbs to compensate for the additional weight on remaining limbs. There are many starter exercises you can do, and Loving Life On Three Legs is filled with more professional tips, and how-to videos for exercises, PROM stretches, and massage...FYI: play time, running and walks do not build strength, only stamina.

The best thing you can do is consult with a certified canine rehab therapist for proper evaluation, treatment and an exercise program prescribed specifically for your pup...what's her name?

Visit a CCRT or CCRP and the Tripawds Foundation can even pay for your first visit! Until then, moderate her activity and start here if you ever need help finding the many Tripawds resources and assistance programs.

And welcome! Please keep us posted, your future forum posts will not require approval.

She is Sooooo  cute! You found the right site. You will get great advise and support from everyone. Just wanted to say you did a great thing adopting olivia!

My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019.  With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer.  I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud!  He will live forever in my Heart!

It's great that you adopted a tripaw. We just celebrated our 1 year "Gotcha" day with our tripaw. These dogs have so much life in them and they certainly add to our lives as well. Continue to review this site as the amount of information is tremendous.
