Cheeto darted in front of my car on US 19 in South Georgia on November 9, 2011. I swerved to miss him and watched him narrowly escape several other cars traveling in excess of 65 moh. I knew if I did not go back for him he would be dead in minutes so I turned around, pulled off the road, opened the door and offered him a cheeto, thus the name. He jumped right in with a big ole smile on his face. He was skinny, tick infested and intact. With 8 small dogs and 4 cats at home I had no intention of keeping him. Had him vetted, fixed and set about getting him fattened up, socialized, some basic obedience and a new home. We knew his paw was an issue but it did not really start bothering him until he started gaining weight and walking, playing fetch, jumping for joy everytime I walked in a room. Everyone agrees amputation is best choice so surgery is tomorrow. We are so bonded and now with this, I have decided to keep him. He gets along well with half of my guys and is a big bouncy bundle of love. I would appreciate any tips, do's and dont's, advice, anything. We will keep everyone updated!

Welcome to you and Cheeto! He looks like a very happy pup.

Our pup did very well as a tripawd. She could still run like mad. Folks often didn't even realize she was 3-legged until she stopped. Of course, we also had cancer to deal with so it's "good" that Cheeto is a tripawd due to an accident and not due to cancer like so many pups are.

You'll find lots of helpful folks here! Let us know how the surgery goes! Sending good thoughts your way! Rest up because the recoverly period (usually about 10-14 days) can be tiring - maybe more so for you than for Cheeto!

It's awesome to be a Tripawd Pawrent. Welcome to the club,
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Hi and welcome!  So sorry Cheeto had a rough go, but sounds like he may have hit the jackpot with his new family.  Don't worry about leaving him - they are on SO much pain medication after the surgery that the only thing they wonder about is the pink elephants floating around the room.  By the time the meds begin wearing off, he'll be ready to come home.

Jackie is right, the recovery can be tiring so try and get some rest before he comes home.  His confidence will be a bit shaken right at first, so lots of encouragement when he gets home.  If you have time, pick up some throw rugs to place over slippery surfaces so he doesn't slip and fall - that can be a bit of a set-back mentally for them.  Good luck!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

welcome to both of you - so wonderful you have found room in your family for cheeto.  rest up now, rest when he rests.  the first two weeks are rough, but like jackie says, at least you are not also facing cancer concerns...  looking forward to more pictures of our 'favorite snack food'!!

What a pawesome thing to do! Thank you for giving Cheeto such a loving, good home. I know he will repay you a thousand times over.

I'm so sorry he's losing his leg, but am glad you found us. I'm betting he won't need much help with recovery, he seems like a spunky dog!

The journey you will be on now will be a little different than what you expected when you made him a part of your family, but it will be filled with lots of great opportunities to show the world that dogs are just incredible, resilient creatures, so deserving of respect and love and good treatment. Thank you for leading the way!

Good luck this week, please keep us posted on his surgery.

What a cute name!! Welcome Cheeto!! Praying for Cheeto's surgery to go fantastic and for a full recovery so he can enjoy his full house of Dogs and Cats!! Make sure to get lots of sleep before he comes home from the hospital and make sure that your floors are covered in a nonslip surface also. It makes a huge difference and they slip very easily after becoming a Tripawd. Many questions will arise as you go through this and we will all be here to help you through. Bless you for helping Cheeto! He is super cute!!

Welcome to Tripawds.
I hope Cheeto's surgery went well. As others have said the first couple of weeks can be bumpy. Some pups seem to sail right through, hopefully Cheeto is one of those! But if he does have some down time don't get discouraged.
As for tips- be sure all floor surfaces have good non slip surfaces, you might want to raise his food dishes. Is he a front or rear amp?
I hope Cheeto is home soon and on the road to recovery.

Welcome Cheeto and famiily. First of all Cheeto you are very lucky. If your mom wouldn't have picked you up off that road, most likely you would not be here. Secondly it is also good you are food oriented. big-grin

I have a special place in my heart for people who intervene or who stop to pick up an animal off the road. I have done this so many times I cannot even count. I do it for turtles, birds, etc, and once for a cat who it looked like had been thrown out of a moving car because the vet said that the front paws were messed up and it had bitten its tongue and had a bloody jaw which would indicated it had landed face first trying to catch itself. Years ago my husband and I (boyfriend at the time) were leaving a beach in the dunes of Indiana and it was in the wee morning hours in the heat of summer. She was right in the middle of the road on the yellow lines. I told my husband, STOP, let's go back. I don't think that cat is dead! So we stopped and I was expecting to find the worst. Luckily we had a towel in the car and a big bucket. You know those kinds that people bring on the beach and fill with ice and put drinks in it. Most of the blood was just out of the mouth and there were no big breaks in the limbs. So I picked her up. She did not fight me, probably because she was in shock. We were at my in laws and they have pets of their own so for safety we had to put her in the garage, still in the bucket, wrapped in her blanket and we left the light on with some water there, expecting her to be dead in the morning. Unfortunately there was no vets open so there was nothing we could do at that time. The next day, miraculously, she was still alive and we called a vets office and they said to bring her in. They treated her, she lived, and ended up being adopted. I learned my lesson that I should always have some kind of blanket or towel or crate in my car at all times because fate seems to bring these animals my way. My husband always has to be ready for a huge STOP! while we are driving because I always seem to see them where others don't. That is just my calling I guess. I have watched over stunned birds as they get their wits back about themselves after hitting a window and treated baby rabbits who got into my garden and bloodied their nose trying to get back out through the tiny holes in the bottom of our rabbit fence.

So bless you for what you are doing. You got lucky to have found Cheeto and Cheeto was lucky to have found you!

Hope all goes well during surgery and recovery.

Are you in the Leesburg/Albany area? If so I am as well. My baby was attacked by another dog and suffered a broken arm and 7 broken ribs. We have had a bumpy road but if you have any questions maybe I will have answers, sounds like your guy wasn't injured too badly so he will probably be up and running in no time. I pray the surgery goes well. If you are in Leesburg/Albany area..who is your vet doing the surgery?

This site has been awesome for me, everyone is so supportive.
