Has anyone out there had any trouble with high liver enzzymes while on carbo or deramax? Zip could not have her 2nd chemo, again, because of this and now it will be 5 weeks since last chemo and with the way OS spreads we are very worried. The results were down some from last week and the wbc were adequate to do the chemo but not the liver.

Some dogs can have severe reactions to NSAIDs like Rimadyl. Whether or not this affects enzyme levels, we don't know, but watch for changes in Zip's stool and ask your vet if another NSAID might help resolve the situation.

Jerry was on Rimadyl for just a few days when we noticed it wreaking havon on his gastrointestinal system, but he coped well with Metacm for nearly two years. Every dog is different.

More importantly, wipe that word worry out of your mind. It only makes matters worse.

Unfortunately 'worry ' is the word the oncologist usedcry Hoping against hope that delaying chemo another week won't give the nasty mets the advantage in this race.

So sorry to hear of the delay in treatment. But I'm sure you wouldn't want to proceed with chemo for Zip if the liver can't handle it just yet.

Maybe think of it that you are just waiting a bit for Zip's body to be at it's strongest, to work with the chemo. Help Zip to fight by giving the most pawsitive energy you can for the next week.

Sending hugs to you and extra pets to Zip

I had two similar experiences:

They tested Charlie's stuff (clinical term) prior to the amputation and almost didn't do it due to one of his liver enzymes being high. When I explained that enzyme is always high (and they double checked with records) they were able to do it.

I can't remember if it was after the 3rd or 4th Carboplatin, but a different enzyme was high. I put Charlie on a medicine that strengthens the liver (I'm at work and can't remember the name of it). It was spendy: about $60 or so for a 10 day tx. I won't be home until tonight, but when I find it, I'll post the name of the medicine. Might be an option to try.

Also, no NSAIDS. If I noticed any pain, I was to give him Tramadol. That won't happen (Charlie gets too loopy on it) but I still have Codeine left. Thankfully haven't had to use any.

Good luck and I'll try posting the name of the liver medicine tomorrow.

Charlie's mom is probably talking about SAM-E.  The brand names include Denosyl and Zentonil but the human form sold by Nature Made is cheaper and just as good. Some products (like denamarin ) include milk thistle for extra nutritional support.

Which enzyme is elevated?  The ALT enzyme is more specific to the liver than the AlkPhos enzyme so is more important.  I'm sure your oncologist will administer the chemo when he/she thinks it is safe.

Focussing hard on the lesson, I see. winker

FYI: Dr. Jessica Waldman recommended Nature Made SAM-E as a great pain reliever for dogs.

Thanks all. She is on Sam-e and milk thistle and when we go for acupunture today we will have enzymes retested. It was her ALT that was high and one other but that is the not the one they are overly worried about. She, Zip, has been feeling so good these last two days very much like her old pre-amp days that it is quite heartening. A gift of joy among the weeds of worry!

Within the last hour I just had Charlie's tested and his is the ALT. It was at 101 and the range is 10-100 (on their test). How high was her ALT?
