Is it safe to leave Coop alone?  So far, either myself, husband or daughters will stay with him (he usually is asleep but may try to get up to move around).  If someone comes to the door he gets barking and up to run to the door.  This starts his incision to weep.  We have put a sign on the door not to knock or ring doorbell but to call us on the phone that you are here.  Tomorrow I have an important family event and Coop will be alone for a few hours.  I am nervous to leave him!  I don't want to put him in his crate because he can't move easily to get comfortable.  I can leave him in the mudroom where the crate is and block it off from the rest of the house.  Do you think he will be safe?  He will be 3 days post surgery.  We all have to go back to work Tuesday which is my other concern.  Thanks!smiley

Cooper should be fine, if he is showing no signs of distress and is getting around OK on his own. But confinement is key to a safe recovery. If you can use a pet gate to create a small recovery room (like a large closet or laundry room) that may be best. Otherwise confine him to one room with plenty of water. If you have any concerns, please consult with your vet.

Thanks for asking! Please keep us posted.

we had to leave Dizzy alone a few days after surgery, we just put her in a separate room from the other 2 left her with food and water and she was fine, she wasn't moving around too much but we would leave her on one sofa come home and she would be on the other. We found she knew her limitations and the pain meds made her sleepy. provided he is confident enough with his balance i doubt it will be an issue

Dizzy diagnosed with osteosarcoma 24 may 2011 amputated same day doing fine hopping around on three legs giving the neighbourhood cats what for

Each time Champ had surgery (spleenectomy and then the amputation) and when he had a slipped disc we kept him in a 6 sided pen. It was big enough he had his water dish, pee pee pads (just in case), his blankets, and toys with him. He was actually very happy to go back in his pen after going outside for walks. I think he felt safe there that they other dog couldn't accidentally knock him around... yes, I guess you could consider her a monkeydog as well although she doesn't even realize she's doing it... lol...

I think this is one of the things that allowed him to heal so well...

I also opted for a 6 sided pen, which I made into a circle so Kess cone couldn't get caught in the corners.  I put a low orthopedic bed in with her, that was easy for her to get in and out of, and I added food and water bowls that attched to the side of the pen and were small enough that Kess could drink from them with the cone on.  Luckily I only had to leave ehr for a couple of hours at a time, but she did fine and slept most of the time.

With a few precatutions things should be ok.  Maybe there is a neighbor or friend who could swing by on their lunch hour the first couple of days to make sure everything is fine.

We put baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs in our split level to create a small confined area on our landing for Cooper for his first few weeks. We both work ten hour days so I came home at lunch to check on him.
