Let me know how the  Adequan shots work.  I am praying for Jake and your family.  Was it hard for you to give him the shot?

Debra & Emily

Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.

Thought sure that I had commented on the difficulty of giving shots, but I cannot find it in this "topic" so either I am losing it (a distinct possibility) or it was in another "topic".  However, giving shots really is not difficult.  One of my first two Standard Poodles developed diabetes so I had to give daily insulin shots.  It was not hard, but after giving Cassy her real shot, I had to put the cover back on the needle and go through the motions of giving Sandy as shot as well.  So much for litter-mates.  Considering the how it went the last time my local vet gave vaccination shots to Cherry, I would rather do it my self.

All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.  Trying to help even if just a little, is one of the ways I keep my sanity (at least what is left.)  By keeping that journal, I can assure you that Cherry still had some real problems at the 43 day mark.  I'll quote the journal (which is actually on-line) "Approximately two days after her first antibiotics, we saw a noticeable improvement in Cherry. She definitely appeared to be feeling better, but the continued to show blood in the urine for another full day."  She had been showing blood in her urine for five days, had absolutely no energy, would not even lift her head, and to add to the difficulties, this was just a week after another of those nasty chemotherapy treatments.  Point here: Do not give up - Stay optimistic -  We are all pulling for you!!!

I'm also a certified vet tech (but my full time job is in human cancer research for many years).

Anyways, I have given many Adequan shots to my doggie patients for many years, so it wasn't a big deal for me. It has to be given intramuscularly, so if you're not familiar with it, you definitely have to have the vet or tech train you. You can do some damage if not given the proper way. It takes a week or two before it shows any effect (if it's going to have an effect)… There are several areas where you can give it, and you have to alternate sides, so as not to cause too much discomfort. I gave it in Jake's dorsal lumbar area… You can give it in their triceps, quadriceps, gluts, or dorsal lumbar area… You have to withdraw the plunger, to make sure you're not in a vessel before injecting… and that you don't hit their sciatic nerve when injecting into the back legs.

Are you also giving any oral glucosamine supplements orally to Emily? Which product and what dose? I really hope it works for Jake… and for Emily, too! This is basically our last resort… I'm feeling good about it… Smile Well, ask me again in a week…Frown

Jake's Mom

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
