more ice cream.... more ice cream.. MORE ICE CREAM!!!

more snuggles... more snuggles... MORE SNUGGLES!!!

more car rides... more car rides.. MORE CAR RIDES!!!

no regrets... no regrets.... NO REGRETS!!!!!

More lovings.. more time... more kisses on that muzzle...

AND MOST OF ALL.. MORE TIME!!!

Even if you snuggle down at night.. and you wake up in the morning and Jackson tells you that this day is the day...

you have been given more time to enjoy and love and cherish... more days together..  more time to sit and study that muzzle, those eyes.. those lashes.. those paws.... and days that you will remember, forever!

Lucky girl.. lucky pup...

now.. go enjoy and love hard!

Jackson is STILL here. He had a grand weekend, actually! First on Friday, I had presentations to give (locally, at Yale) and so one of his favorite people came to doggie-sit. UPS delivered packages and a repairman was on our patio, too. Lots of activity to bark at! Then my parents came down for a night just to say hi and goodbye to one of their favorite dogs. For dinner, my brother had a small meatball pizza delivered just for Jackson! We let him eat most of it, but saved enough so he could also enjoy next-day cold pizza. I joke that Jackson has a fan club, but he really does. He seems OK to us. He's not as energized as he used to be, but he's eating more than his share, is as wiggly-butt as ever, and still enjoys his games of fetch and tug 'o war. He's drinking more, but that's OK.  We'll take him out whenever he needs or clean up after him.  There are no such things as "accidents" in this house these days!  We watch him like a hawk and will not let him suffer. Until that day, whatever he wants, he gets. LOVE HIM.

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Have you considered starting him on a supplement called Yunnan Baiyao? It is a Chinese herbal supplement that is supposed to help with circulation/blood clotting. We typically recommend it to our patients with hemangiosarcoma. There aren't any definitive studies as to its efficacy, but it is well tolerated and it may be potentially helpful to him.

It is sold in capsule/powder form online or at local holistic Asian markets.

There's also another holistic non-chemo option based off of a mushroom extract that has been proven to prolong the life of dogs with hemangio. The mushroom is called coriolus versicolor and is given as a pill form. It can cause some tummy upset in some dogs and it is a bit expensive but it might be worth looking into as well.

Great tips Elaina, thank you! We do need to write about yunnan baiyao but meanwhile here's a post we wrote about coriolus versicolor:

Hi all,

Jackson is still here and having another good day.  Lots of play tonight!

When we left the internist, we were given a box of Yunnan Baiyao.  He's taking 1 pill/night, and that in addition to all his other supplements (and pizza, or ice cream, or lamb lungs, or...).  I was jazzed his Dr gave us an alternative medicine, as we've been doing that for years already!

Who knows why Jackson is still here?  But he IS and it's a gift!
