What a year it has been.. Not an easy one for sure... in 2014 we started construction on a house.. We found out our doggie Bonzai had cancer Nov 2014. Amputation was January 2015.... Which the amputation was during a monsoon.. So for a week we were carrying him outside with a towel under his belly in 4 inches of water and pouring rain.. Along with the amputation and cancer of Bonz.. My wife's mother was also battling lung cancer that had moved to her brain.. And a series of strokes that at the age of 54 left her mother in a care facility for the rest of her life.. Her mother was in Canada. My wife an only child.. So with a new house and moving and a three legged blind trooper already in his senior years.. I was alone. My wife has been in Canada now for pretty much 18 months straight. She is now working there as we have been decimated as she had to quit her job here in the US last  year to take care of her mother. She flew down for a week for Bonz's surgery.  Thank god cause I would of never of made it. She flew down to help with the move as well.

Things have been busy and frustrating. I stopped blogging. I stopped living. We have 4 rescues. One has to be segregated because she is agressive and attacks the others. We cannot even think of getting rid of her as she is our last hope of a home but it is tough. I get home from work at about 6.. then the harnessing and carrying of Bonz outside and the feeding and segregation and separate walks.. Bonz does not get much walks. He gets plenty of time outside but he can't go far at all without faltering now.. In the evenings after he eats I usually carry him in to get a drink of water. He can walk and relieve himself and eat and he seems OK. I just feel he gets exhausted moving around.

So since money is tight and I do not blog I wanted to update on here.

Bonz is still good. Now 13 months past amputation his checkup is good. The Dr said he wanted to see him for xrays 6 months after surgery. We waited.. We figured if he was going to die and the cancer came back we were better off not knowing. After a year though it has not.. He still eats and is still healthy. I will be honest at the year checkup I think the surgeon was kinda amazed he was still alive lol.  He seemed shocked we brought him back. Like he was not expecting to see him anymore.

At the beginning of this whole thing our decision to amputate was based on ... "well if he gets one more year.. that is like 7 dog years .. so if one of us could have surgery that extended our own lives 7 years we would do it right?" of course we would. so we did.. now 13 months past we still have bonz bonz.. Now we have some more stuff to deal with... His age is taking it's toll. We are dealing with senior dog issues now. He is slower.. grumpier... but he smiles in the yard and he eats like a horse (meatballs every night) .

I wish his mom could of spent this year with us. but he is not the only one that needs care and he understands.

It really sounds like a rough year, I'm so sorry about your mother-in-law, and the time your wife has to spend away...that's never easy.  It sounds like Bonzai is doing pretty good though, so congratulations on that!  clap

Never feel bad for reaching out to us, that's what we're here  for!

Heyyyyy. I'm so glad you came back to update us, even if the news was hard to share. Thank you. As a member of this community, we are always here for you through thick and thin, never forget that OK?

Yes it has been a long time. And I'm sure there are lots of folks here who weren't around when Bonz and you joined us. One very important thing you forgot to mention this time, is that BONZ IS AN 11.5 YEARS YOUNG, BLIND TRIPAWD everypawdy! And one truly amazing, resilient dawg!

Here is his blog, check it out.

This year has clearly been a hard one and I'm so sorry for all that your pack has struggled with. I hope that Bonz remarkable life will keep you feeling hopeful for the future. Remember when you wrote this?

It is getting closer to Bonz being an amputee for two months.. Man all I can say is this guy has guts.. He is tough. I cannot imagine being blind and losing a leg but he just keeps pushing. He will not be stopped. He wants to walk.. he drags me around. Yes he gets tired and yes he misses a step and face plants but he gets right back up and starts barking or walking or whatever. I really admire this guy.

As Bonz gets older, know that we are here if you have any questions OK? We have a Tripawds Pals Helpline now, you can call and we'll even chat with you on the phone. So even though your pack is temporarily separated, you are not alone my friend, not at all.

Please don't be a stranger OK? Sending out lots of hugs to you and that pawesome hero of yours.

Oh gosh! Ditto everything Jerry said and Donna too! We are ALL here for you! We ALL lean on each other from time to time! You jave been through so much! You and Bonsai BOTH!

But you know what? You're both still standing! . We were cheering you on with the first post! You and Bonsai became family with that first ppst. After your update today, we are cheering even louder, plus giving you a standing ovation!!

I'm sorry Bonz is slowing down some due to "senioritis". It's also quite amazing that he is still doing this well for a three legged senior blind dog! Becoming a senior around here is a victory in itself!

You really have your hands full caring for your pack. You are giving all of them exquisite care. ALL pf them are so lucky to have you as their human...especially that little aggressive pup! She would jave no life if you had not given her a home.

I know the dogs each live for the moment you come home! I'm sure they each jockey for your attention the second you walk in. I know that, even as tired as you are, it makes you happy to see them so happy! I'm glad you all have each other while your wife had to be with her Mom.

PLEASE, PLEASE take care of yourself. I KNOW you thoroughly enjoy being surrounded bynyour adorable pack. Just make sure you are doing something special for yourself, okay?

Bonz clearly is still enjoying being a "grumpy old man" and stuffing his face with meatballs! I soooo love seeing these pictures! He really is smiling! 🙂

You are clearly their Saint...their everything...and that's a good thing to be!

Please stay connected AND update with more photos! You have such a good looking pack!

And HAPPY ONE YEAR AND ONE MONTH AMPUVERSARY BONSAI! You really are quite an inspiration...quite a miracle dog!

Ice cream and cake for everyone!

Lots of love to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
