Well, things have finally started to settle down so I am finally getting a chance to introduce Gaby.   Gaby is a 10 yr. old (Nov. 1st was her big birthday), 70 lb. (now 63 lb.) Golden Retriever/German Shepard mix.  The past 2 weeks have flown by (most of the time).  Lets see, where to begin.  I'll start with Sept. 20, 2011.  I let her outside to do her business and there was a fox in our yard.  Well, she doesn't really like other critters in her kingdom, so she chased it out of the yard.  The next day I noticed she was limping so I thought she had jammed a toe (which she has done before) or sprained her leg.  I took her to the vet a couple of days later and she was diagnosed with the beginning of arthritis.  At that time, they wanted to do a senior blood workup.  Well that came back with the onset of kidney disease.  We were told to change her diet and we put her on Prescription Hills J/D and was told we would see improvement in 21 days.  Well, those days past and she was still limping so back to the vet we went.  Due to the possibility of kidney disease, Rimaydl was not an option so she was given Tramadol.  My husband and I went on vacation for a couple of days as she went to her own vacation to the kennel (which she loves).  We figured that would give her time to rest her leg as we told them no activity for her.  I had decided that if we pick her up and she is still limping, I was taking her back to the vet.  Guess what...she was still limping.

So, Thursday, Oct. 20th I get her into the vet the first thing in the a.m.  This vet was able to locate where here pain was coming from right away and wanted to do an xray.  Sure, we had a feeling we would have to do that to determine what was causing the pain.  I never expected it to show with bone cancer.  So in for a bone biopsy she went.  The vet explained to me what our options were.  I sure had alot of research to do.  One of the nurses there recently went through all of this and she recommmened the Tripawd website to me. I bought her home, did my research, and supervised Gaby as she was now in so much pain.  Sunday she went downhill really quick.  I actually called in to talk to the dr. (who didn't make it), but whoever I talked to on the air that night, I want to thank you for your time and support.

We went to the vet fixed thing Monday morning as she was in sooo much  pain.  The vet was able to get us in on Tuesday, Oct. 25th to do the right front leg amputation.  This was are only option due to the pain and we decided this dog still has alot of life in her.  She did have blood work done again before the surgery and that came back perfect (no possibility of kidney problems), chest x-rays came back clean as did her ultra sound of her stomach and spleen.

We picked her up on Wed., Oct. 26th.  We are now 12 days post amp. and she is doing well.  She has been off of her meds for a couple of days and sleeps through the night.  She has gone on a couple of 2 minute walks and has been able to sit in her favorite chair.  My only concern has been getting her to eat.  For a couple of days it's been a real struggle, I have tried everything.  Today I put turkey in her kibble and she gobbled it up so quick.  So hopefully the eating issue is under control.  Her staples are coming out this Tuesday, so hopefully she will start to get back to her normal self.  Oh, and Chemo starts this Friday.

Well, that's enough babbling for now.  Even though this is my first time making a post, I just want to thank everyone as reading all of the posts on this website has really helped me these past two weeks.

Welcome to you and Gaby! Glad to hear she is doing well. When Abby was recovering, she really liked having Newman's Own canned organic beef & liver dog food mixed in with her kibble. It's pretty gross looking, but she loved it.

Please keep us posted on how she's doing. I hope she does well w/ chemo. Most dogs do.

All the best to your lovely girl,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Glad to hear Gaby made it through surgery and the recovery period with little problems. For the food thing, I would try boiled chicken or hamburger or other type of meat. It's possible that with the pain meds and such, her tummy could be a little upset. Or it could just be that the surgery and healing process took so much physically that she lost her appetite. Try experimenting a little with fresh meats (cooked — I'm all for a raw diet, but cancer dogs have to be careful as their immune systems can be somewhat compromised). If her second test showed no kidney issues, maybe she doesn't like the high carb/low protein kidney diet kibble, and you can go back to a more meat based food? Just a thought.

You could also read Dr. Dressler's Cancer Diet. That's where I got the inspiration for my "Soup" recipe.

Good luck with Gaby, and be sure to keep us posted on her progress. And photos — we want pictures of your girl!

Oh it's WONDEFUL to hear from  you!

For those of you who don't know, Gaby's Mom was on our Tripawd Talk Radio show just before Gaby's amputation. We're so glad you found help there.

Appetite loss is normal and I'll betcha she will be back to her normal self this week. Rio's Mom's soup recipe is a good one, try it and let us know what she thinks.

This is great news, we're glad to hear she's doing well. Don't be a stranger and keep us posted OK?

Welcome Joanie, Doug and Gaby.  So glad she's doing so well...it's amazing!  The food thing is fairly common...keep trying though, something is sure to get her interested.  For us, once the staples were removed it was a little easier...still took a little time to get Sam fully engaged in eating again, but it was better!  Good luck and again, welcome!  xoxo Sue and Sammy

Sounds like Gabby's well on her way to a happy life as a tripawd.  I totally spoiled Kess and gave her canned food for the first few weeks after her surgery.  Like Micki said those perscription diets can be pretty lousy, taste and ingredient wise.  Lots of manufacturers make a low protien kidney diet.  You might try a few different brands see if she finds one more appealing.

Hi Gaby and pack,

Welcome to Tripawds.  Glad to hear you are most of the way through the recovery period- but we didn't get to share the joy of first pee and first poop with you!!!oh-my

On the eating- hopefully it is a result of everything Gaby has been through in the last couple of weeks.  But since you mentioned kidney issues- be sure you keep and eye on that.    If Gaby isn't eating after suture removal or about 3 or 4 weeks post amp you might want to check again.  My tri-pug developed kidney failure (long after her amp) and one of the main symptoms was lack of apatite.  I tried the prescription diet for Maggie, but she didn't like it, and I didn't like the ingredients.

I hope Gaby keeps getting stronger!  And we need pictures of her sitting in her favorite chair.

Hi Gaby.

I put a little bit of sardines + oil on Tate's kibble and he gobbled it up.  Plus it was easy, just open a can.

Here is a picture of Gaby and I in our "HEY CANCER...I BITE BACK"  doggy t-shirts.  This was taken yesterday right before her first round of chemo.  The date was 11/11/11 so hopefully we will be lucky.

Recovery has been going pretty good.  This past Tuesday I took her in to get her staples removed but she ended up having to get some dead skin tissue removed and some loose skin tightened.  So we went in with staples and came out with sutures.  So back on the meds and more sleeping on the air mattress.  The healing looked good on Friday so we were still able to keep our chemo appointment.

As far as chemo, she seems to be a bit tired and eating is a challenge (again).  We will see what happens with dinner tonight.  We did take Gaby on her first outing today (shopping) and she made it through one store and then she just wanted to chill outside and get lets of attention from everyone walking by.
