Hello everyone,
So glad there is a support group for us dog owners going through cancer and amputation with our pets.
Hunter is our first dog together and we always said we'd do anything for him if the time ever came.
Well, unfortunately it did, and he's not even 9 years old yet. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right rear leg.
I started a blog for him... it's called Hunter's Second Chance. I even posted some pictures.
Is it too soon to post his surgery pictures already?
He is home and resting and loves his treats and lingers on his potty breaks outside in the nice weather.
Looking forward to giving and receiving support here.......

Our Super Dog Hunter crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a beautiful summer day in July, just 3 days shy of his 10th Birthday. He gave us everything since he was 8 weeks old. Hunter was a 14 month warrior of OS. We LOVE and MISS him every day.
Welcome! Hunter is one handsome boy! So glad to hear he's doing so well, just remember that there will be so many ups and downs in the next two weeks as he recovers from surgery and the drugs do a number on him. We were in a similar situation to you-- Scout was our first dog together-- my first dog, period-- and he was also diagnosed when he was eight. It's tough, but you'll be amazed at how well he'll do and at the support you'll receive here. Looking forward to hearing more about Hunter.

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
I'm glad Hunter made it through surgery and is back home.
Have you read through Jerry's Required Reading List yet? Lots of good info on what to expect with amputation, recovery, and treatment. There is also an ebook you can download called Three Legs and a Spare.
Since I read in your blog that Hunter is a bird dog I thought these stories might provide some inspiration.
The first is Jeddediah the bird dog. He lost a front leg to an accident, and after recovery was back to hunting.
And this truly inspiring story about Bart the AKC champion, hunter, and 3 YEAR osa survivor.
The next couple of weeks can be full of ups and downs, so don't get discouraged. Hunter will be back to his old self soon.
Come here often with questions or if you need support.

Welcome, Hunter. I think he is beautiful and his surgery pictures may help others know what to expect. I will switch over and read your blog.
I love your attitude. You already understand this site perfectly. It is, indeed, about giving and receiving support. I don't think people will let you down here. Good luck with the next few weeks. They may be challenging, but you will be so proud of Hunter and what he can do.
Best,
Beth, Smilin' Sammy and MB Wiggly Wrigley
(BTW, in case you are wondering, MB stands for monkeybutt — a four-legged sibling of a tripawd. Their stated mission is to prevail against the too-spoiled tripawds. Hooray for some veterans here who formed the Monkey Dog Federation as a means of leavening the usually serious mood of this site with a little humor.)
Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
Hello to you and Hunter. Sorry you had to find us here, but you will not be sorry you did.
It sounds like he's doing as well as can be expected so soon after surgery. As others mentioned, there will likely be ups and downs for the next 10-12 days. We're here if you have questions during his recovery. Once he's back to his old self, he will amaze and inspire you.
I know how overwhelming, scary and sad the bone cancer Dx is, but there can still be lots of wonderful, amazing times ahead for you and Hunter. You will develop an even more special bond with him.
Being a Tripawd pawrent is an awesome thing. Welcome to the club,
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
Welcome Hunter and family! What a handsome boy!!!
I'm so happy to hear that he made it through surgery and is doing well. Like others said, there may be a few crash moments but that's usually because they have an adrenaline rush when they get home and then it wanes. So don't get too scared. It's normal. But we'll have paws crossed he'll whiz thru it!
If you need anything, we here.
(I'll check out your blog too)
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Welcome Hunter ! Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Spirit Samson was Spirit Tripawd Daisys four legged "brother" and ruled as the self proclaimed head of the Monkeybutt Federations East Coast Division. Lady Chunky Monkey stayed from Oct 2011 and left for the bridge in Apr 2012. Miss Perdy is left and has some big pawprints to fill.

Hi Hunter! You are a GORGEOUS pup! I"m so sorry you got the diagnosis, but always remember that many, many dogs go on to beat the bone cancer odds. I did, for two whole years! Other dogs have lived for four!
Is it too soon to post pictures? Never! We always say that more information is better than less, so someday when a new Tripawd pawrent is in your situation, and they're looking through the blogs, they'll know what to expect.
For now, take it easy and relax. Let your people spoil you rotten with all that great food and treats! There will be lots of good play times when you're recuperated.
How can we help you? What questions do you have? We're ready to help when you need it OK?
