I received an email back in January from an area shelter that was full and needed foster homes/and adoptees. They attached a list of their most urgent dogs that were to be put down that weekend (This was Friday). They were special need dogs and so the list only went out to rescue groups I believe. This list had pictures of all their special needs dogs and the last one was a Min Pin mix with an injured left rear leg. I told the humane society that I volunteer with that I would foster if they would take him but I had no intentions of keeping him. Yeah right! They picked him up and took him to the vet. They originally thought they could save his leg so he was scheduled for surgery. As time passed (we waited for a part for the surgery) the specialist decided against surgery because he was young and it wasnt hurting him. Apparently the leg had been broke for a while and had healed wrong so he had little use of it. We brought him home and he immediatley got along with my other two min pins. Learned to use the pee pads immediatly and learned how to wrap me around his little paw. He is more mild than my other min pins, loves everyone and loves car rides. I decided I couldnt give him up so we told the Humane Society that we wanted to adopt him after Easter. Easter weekend I noticed his injured leg, around the bone, was filling with liquid. We took him back to the vet and they said that this would happen everytime the weather changed and he would be in pain each time. They recommended amputation so that is what we did. He had his surgery on April 16th. I got to bring him back home on April 20th. He is doing awesome! We had to push back our adoption date until he is healed but that shouldnt take too long. big-grin

Welcome Harwood! What a cutie pie! Please keep up posted and let us know how he is doing.

Spirit Samson was Spirit Tripawd Daisys four legged "brother" and ruled as the self proclaimed head of the Monkeybutt Federations East Coast Division. Lady Chunky Monkey stayed from Oct 2011 and left for the bridge in Apr 2012. Miss Perdy is left and has some big pawprints to fill.

Welcome to Tripawds.

Wonderful that you were willing to 'foster' a special needs dog.  The first two weeks after surgery tend to be the worst- so you are half way there!  How's he doing?  Since the leg was not useful I'm guessing he is adapting to being a tripawd pretty quickly.  You said he was young- how old is he?

And a big YEA for no cancer!!!

My tripawd was a little black pug named Maggie, she was also a rear amp.  She was about 12" at the shoulder and about 17.5 pounds.  She started slowly after her amp but eventually was getting around just fine.  She had her surgery when she was 7.5 years old and lived for almost 4 years.

Thank you all. I am not for sure how he got his name. Either the Humane society named him or the shelter sometimes names them from the street they were picked up on. I didnt really like the name at first but it has grown on me.

Harwood is around 8 months old. Since he didnt use his leg much he has adapted being a tripawd very quickly. He goes to the vet tomorrow to have his staples removed. I will be so glad when he doesnt have to wear the cone anymore! He cant go out the dog door with it on and sometimes he forgets he is wearing it and smashes into the door. Sorry to hear about your pug. I hate cancer. We lost my poodle to cancer about two years ago.

Welcome to you and Harwood. He looks like a real sweetie! So nice of you to be his "failed foster". 🙂

Looking forward to hearing more about his adventures as a Tripawd.

It's an awesome thing to be a Tripawd pawrent. Welcome to the club,

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Hi and welcome!  I volunteered with a rescue group for several years when we lived in Charlotte and we ended up adopting two dogs (littermates).  It is so hard to see these kiddos without falling for them.  Good luck with Harwood's recovery!

Lisa

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

What a darling little guy he is!!!

It's so heartwarming to hear of foster failings!  I have no doubt that Harwood got the best home EVER and he's going to make you very happy!

I think Harwood is a great name! You can do all sorts of shortened versions of it like Har Har, Harby, Har....too fun!

Hope the vet visit goes well. You'll both be well on your way to a long hoppy life together, and hopefully one that's uneventful, once that cone of shame comes off.

The Dr. Visit went great. They were impressed with how well he had healed and the staples got to come out! It looks really good. She said he only has to wear the cone for two more days. Yeah! I took the cone off last night so we could play in the back yard . He had so much fun throwing his toys in the air and running from one side of the yard to another! He is such a sweet boy.
