Hello Everyone
My wife and I found this website when looking for advice as our senior dog Harley (10 years old Bearded Collie) faced amputation due to a tumour in his rear left foot and ankle. I originally created a blog but finally found the forums so to those people who posted on the blog thank you very much for your comments.
Well events overtook us and two weeks ago Harley was admitted for surgery and we were able to bring him home 10 days ago. We were both worried about our reaction to seeing him and both had guilty feelings about his surgery. However he was glad to see us and keen to get home. He has had a restful week and yesterday we saw the start of his return to his previous character. He leaped onto my wifes lap (his normal resting place) and seemed quite at peace. He is now roaming round the house revisiting his favourite spots although he still only goes outside on a lead.
Things are looking promising and we are hoping for a continued recuperation as Harley adjusts to his new configuration. We have to keep reminding ourselves that the alternative was a hobbled gait and pain which are hopefully now in the past. I will keep you posted as to progress and if I can find out how will post some photos.
Best Wishes to all of you
Ray

Welcome Ray!
Sorry you and Harley have had to join our community but hopefully it'll make your journey a little less stressful.
I'm so happy to hear that Harley is doing well after his surgery! He sounds like a recovery champ! Trust us, it will only get better from here on out!
To post pics, here's a little step-by-step post I had put together a while ago. It's based on having a Facebook account but you can use any pics from your blog too. As long as the pics are already online, the process is the same.

Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Welcome to you and Harley,
We've had lots of senior dogs here do really well. Once Harley is fully recoverd and gets his stamina back, he should do well too! He'll amaze and inspire you.
Hope his recovery continues to go well,

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
I'm so happy to hear that Harley is doing well. I hope that you have happy days ahead with him.
K, an 8 year old chocolate lab, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the radius and ulna on 12/23/11. She had stereotactic radiation to kill the bone tumors, and 3 rounds of carboplatin. On 3/16/12, lung mets were found. We tried several different kinds of chemotherapy to slow the lung mets but none worked. Finally, mets appeared at other sites, including her spine. She earned her angel wings on July 15, 2012. K changed my life, and I'll never forget her. Our/my journey is chronicled at romp-roll-rockies.blogspot.com.
great to hear harley is adapting so well!!! can't wait til you get those pictures posted.

Love Never Ends
Ray, Harley and family, welcome! Thanks so much for stopping by to share your story, I know it will inspire others who are in the first stages of coping with amputation as an option. We too think it's better than the alternative.
Woo hoo! Tripawds Rule!
