Sounds like you and Gerry are going to become the neighborhood loose dog rescuers! Smile Has Gerry eaten any more of your blinds? Guess it will take some time before he gets used to his new home, and looses some of his bad habits... But he has been pretty lucky so far, with you finding and rescuing him!! Looking forward to more pictures and stories of Gerry Houdini!!!

Ah yes, so I've mentioned that I walked dogs for the local Humane Society for some months before I adopted Yoda. One of the dogs I walked was a beautiful blue-eyed huskie called Sinatra. Sinatra taught me how dangerously clever those huskies can be. He proceeded to show me where all the weaknesses in the Humane Society's perimeter were. Holes in the fence and such. At one point, the trail didn't go close enough to one portion of the fence, so he jumped straight up from a standing position like two feet or something to get a look.

So, later, after I adopted Yoda and was looking for a good dog gate, one with a huskie on the box naturally caught my eye. It's about 3′4" high, made of metal rather than plastic, and has a handle at the top for a human hand to open and secure it.

It worked for Yoda except once or twice for some unknown reason he got it into his head to knock it loose (usually during his passing bouts of separation anxiety). Gerry's probably 2/3 Yoda's size, stands a little over 2 feet tall and was pretty near skin and bones when I first brought him home. He also doesn't have any human hands as far as I can see – nope no opposable thumb either. And yet, as I was trying to build up his tolerance to being left alone, gate in the kitchen, one day I came home to it wide open! He had knocked over his dishes and his bed was askew. He also appeared to have thrown a tantrum as couch pillows were on the floor as well, but nothing was damaged. No scratches on the walls and the gate was still firmly wedged in place. He must have worked out to get on his hind legs, chomp on the handle with his mouth and push forward with just the right timing to let himself out. Wow! As soon as I gave up on the gate, he was and has continued to be a perfect gentleman when left alone in the house.

So, coupled with his destruction of crates, his absolute misery riding in cars, and his excellent behavior when ungated, it seems pretty clear Gerry is claustrophobic. Oh, Ger, if you don't ride in the car, you'll never get to the dog park! We're working on it. I'm hoping taking him to super-fun destinations like the park will have some impact. Any tips on resources on this issue would be very welcome though!

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Ask your vet about maybe trying Clomicalm for Gerry's anxiety. I've seen alot of dogs helped with this medication... Including one of my own dogs... who developed some big behavioural problems after we all were in a very bad car accident many years ago...

You might as well take 'foster' out of the title now...

Mag is a rear amp. She never had any leakage, and I never covered the incision. Good thing I didn't have to- Mag hates to wear anything. When she had her first tumor removed from her side she could just barley reach the top of the incision with her back foot (she still had two then)and she managed to pull out a suture and get a minor infection. So I put t-shirts on her to keep her from scratching it. She hated it and glared at me- but as soon as I wasn't watching her she would get out of it, the little Houdini...
For her amp she didn't need a e-collar, her little pug Buddha belly combined with her short pug nose kept her mouth away from the incision.
Gerry is adorable and sounds like he will be trouble for years to come sf-laugh

"Foster" has been in my name from the beginning and it's going to stay for 2-3 more weeks at the very least. I'm keeping an open mind until we're through his recovery. Gerry is very adoptable, friends and neighbors have already commented on how they would love to have him (though none of them believe I won't adopt him either). They have all been single folks like me though, and I've been thinking Gerry would probably love to be a family dog. Yoda was inclined to be a one-person dog, but Gerry is super-social. I don't think I could convince myself to part with him to anything less than a loving two-person household.

But I will not give in to all the well-meaning peer pressure from you all. This is not a decision I'm even going to try to make until after he is recovered from surgery. And apparently, as the foster, I have veto power over prospective adopters (with this particular shelter) so I might give potential adopters a chance and then change my mind and keep him forever after all - I think that's allowed. My personal finances are a factor - they have to be for Gerry's sake too - but maybe a little stalling will help the situation. Finding a good housemate could certainly make the difference. Time will tell.

Thanks for your recent tips, Angel Jake's Mom and Karen & the pug girls!

I think I'm going to try my hand at a Gerry blog soon. I have a few (very few) pictures that go with Gerry stories that I want to share next. But I have a bunch of chores and errands to be sure to get through this weekend, with Gerry's surgery coming up this Wednesday, so I may not get to it today.

Hey Gerry, or Foster (that is a pretty good name too!)

I was also a highly social dog – you can't believe how sociable I was, just going from one person to the next to say hello and get pets and give leans at the park. My mum always felt a little bit guilty that I did not live in a house with about 10 kids and at least 5 dogs, and a few cats and gerbils – I LOVE little animals. I even used to carry the little animals around the house in my mouth which used to totally freak out my mom (hey, get a grip Mom, I didn't try to kill them or anything, I just wanted them CLOSE TO ME . . . and, uh, well protect them from that crazy Yoda). I was happier when we had human company at our home. Fortunately, we moved into a house with neighbours that just adored me and invited me over all the time.

But despite my social nature, I was still pretty focused on my Mom. And I bet Gerry loves you most of all (do you think another person will find it adorable when he chews their blinds?). He can always meet other people and other animals when you take him out.

Woops. Sorry. Blush  I did not mean to apply more "well-meaning peer pressure". Heck, what do I know? I am just a dawg.

Well, sounds like Gerry knows how to handle being left alone. Maybe the gate reminds him of the shelter and that's what freaks him out? If he didn't eat your couch, I'd say he's doing pretty good!

It sounds like he gets plenty of exercise with you, but maybe he just isn't tired out enough or have enough things to keep him occupied behind the gate?

Yoda's Mom,

I call you Yoda's Mom to remind you what a wonderful mother you were to Yoda.  Forgive me, please, but I AM going to give you well meaning peer pressure.  You are able to provide Gerry with socializtion at doggie parks and walks around your neighborhood.  I cant help but feel Yoda put Gerry in your path and I would hate to see you have to suffer another loss in not keeping Gerry.  I want you to keep him.  I really want you to keep him.  If you don't though, think of me  because I don't want him to go to a family we don't know.  Remember I am encouraging you to keep him.  Yoda didn't put him in my path.

Oh boy, so busy trying to be 100% for getting Gerry to the vet tomorrow and all that will come after, in the middle of a work week. To add to the excitement, my supervisor has been on vacation until today, so today is when I finally got to find out for sure which days I could get off of work. Amazingly, I got all my first choices, so I'll have a couple hours tomorrow to take him in (plenty of time), a half day on Friday to bring him home in the afternoon, and a full day off Monday – a 3 and a half day weekend to get us started! Phew!! Thanks for everyone's thoughts, prayers, and crossed paws on that because it was really unlikely that it would all work out like that.

If you've seen this, but haven't seen Gerry's new blog – Gerry has a new blog. His first two posts have lots of typos because we're so busy, but wanted to share our pictures very badly! This weekend as we both will be taking it easy as much as possible, we will probably be able to edit better.

I wish I could say this amputation is easier. Not having cancer to look forward to is absolutely pawesome, but the one (and only, no doubt) thing that can be said for cancer is that at least it makes an amputation appear less intimidating by comparison. And it's hard not being in charge of Gerry's medical care and being in direct contact with the vet(s) (though tomorrow and Friday I must get some!). That's probably what's causing me the most anxiety. But if it weren't through the shelter, I couldn't get him his surgery, so it's more than worth my added anxiety.

Thanks for all the blog comments from everyoone so far. Gerry wants to comment back to you all – I think he's going to leave me notes for me to publish tomorrow, but no more time for posting or blogging this evening, I'm afraid. I am so behind on reading other peoples' stuff too - eek! But we will catch up like Yoda after a rabbit!!
