My husband and I have been fostering dogs for our local City Animal Shelter.  We just picked up our newest foster, Tre.  He is a pit bull puppy approximately 7-8 months old.  On 4/8/14 he was brought in as a stray so they really have no idea what happened to him.  X-rays showed that his left front humerus is shattered. He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable...still wagging, giving kisses, and wanting to hop around everywhere.  Due to limited resources the shelter contracts with UC Davis Veterinary school for a lot of the major surgeries - they are able to perform surgeries for free as part of their education/training.  We are currently waiting for an amputation date.

This will be our first tripawd and I'm trying to get as much research in as possible so I can have some heads up as to what to expect and trying to keep my emotions in check at the same time. He was at the shelter for 10 days before they placed him with us and I have no idea how long it will take to schedule the surgery. I think I'll be able to handle the post op much easier than seeing him as he is now.  His leg appears to have nerve damage as he doesn't whine or cry if you get near it or if he accidently drags it a little - it just hangs there limp and lifeless. He has wounds on his chest we are trying to keep clean.  Some I think could use a stitch or two, but I am no veterinarian.

We are just working to keep him comfortable and calm. Not always easy since he gets excited and wants to jump.  We have 2 three year old labs, so we have been keeping everyone separate.  Tre is in no condition to be around a couple excited labs and we always do a quarantine period with each foster to ensure there is no kennel cough or other contagious disease. Tre has been on antibiotics for 10 days so we're hoping that eliminates any kennel cough.

I'm certain I will be able to find a lot of wonderful resources here and get the emotional support I'll need to keep Tre positive on his road to surgery, healing, and future adoption.  Thanks in advance!
