Hi,  My name is Helenmarie and I just wanted to say that I am sooo grateful to have found this site.  We have a wonderfully sweet natured yellow lab, Dylan.  He is 7 1/2 yrs old. He is a big lab, weighs about 121 lbs.  We also have a border collie, Zoe, (same age)  In July we noticed that Dylan developed a limp and noticed a small bump on his left front leg.  At first we thought he may have slipped on the deck and in a couple of days he would be better.  Within a week the lump got bigger.  We took him to the vet for checkups and x-ray.  He was healthy except for the bump.  They sent us to a specialist orthopedic vet and had a biopsy done on this bump.  It kept getting bigger.  Results came back - it was cancer.

We were absolutely devestated and lost.  Our wonderful vet, who I think may be one of the best on the east coast, said that  we should amputate as it kept growing.  It was myaxosarcoma.  He said it would not spread but the lump would continue to grow. And grow it did- it became the size of an apple, and other lumps were growing around it.  We could see it was getting much worse and more painful.

We were so worried about the amputation due to his age and weight.  He also was always a couch potato.  So I could not imagine him getting up and around after this.  After finding tripawds.com and reading all the stories we were much more confident about having this done.  He had his surgery 2 days ago.  Brought him home yesterday.  It was tough as we have several stairs and he was in pain due to surgery.  Finally got him in and settled.  He ate his dinner like crazy and had plenty of water.  Getting him up to go outside to pee is difficult right now as he is hurting and medicated but from reading all the stories here I know things will get better.

Thank you again for being here and I will keep updating Dylan's progress.  I want to help others with this very difficult descision as I was helped from others.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hi Helenmarie, Dylan and family, welcome. We're sorry you had to join this club but it's great to hear your optimistic and hoppy attitude..that will take you very far over these next few weeks as you go through the recovery process! And yes, things will definitely get better. What kind of pain meds is he on? Is he eating and drinking? It sounds like things are going very well overall.

I hope you don't mind but I moved your post to it's own topic so Dylan's story won't get lost. Your future posts won't require moderation so post away!

Glad to hear that Dylan is doing so well so quickly after his surgery. 120 lbs IS a big lab!!! But I have no doubts that he will learn to adapt and be just as happy on 3 legs as he was on 4!

He may have some good and bad days early on, so don't get too discouraged. Some dogs show daily progress, some show weekly progress. But he will get there!

I assume you are talking about a myxosarcoma? They are generally very invasive locally, but slow to metastasize. Sounds like you caught it early so the chances of limb amputation being curative are excellent. But just to be on the safe side, I usually recommend chest x-rays at 3, 6 and 12 mos post-op to make sure there are no lung mets (as that's where it likes to go).

I'd love to see a pic of Dylan!

Right hind limb amputated 7/3/12 for OSA, started on alternating cycles of Carboplatin and Doxorubicin and oral Palladia. Single lung met 9/1. Met in the neck muscle removed 9/30. Large mass in sublumbar lymph node 10/2. Rescue chemo with ifosfamide 10/6. Mets to the rib and axillary lymph node 10/21. Started Leukeran and Pred 10/25. Wookie left this Earth for a far better place on 12/4/12. I miss you, Boo, you were my heart.

Dylan has a patch of Fentanol (spelling?) and is taking three 50mg. of tramadol 2x per day for now.  He sleeps alot but just came in after pooping on day 2.  He actually ran a few steps in the yard!  He is eating well and drinking pretty normal.  I am amazed!

When I can figure out how to do it I will post pics.  I'm not that good with the computer.  I will keep updating.

Thank you for your words of encouragement.  Yes, Dylan was diagnosed with myaxosarcoma.  Our vet did tell us it does not spread so we were grateful for that.  Thank you for your recommendation.  I will do that at 3 mos. 6mos.and then again at 12 mos.  I couldn't believe how fast this grew. Yes, Dylan is one of the biggest labs I've ever seen and as soon as I figure out how to do it I will post pictures. Wookie sure is cute!

Wookie, thanks for catching that myxosarcoma typo. We don't have a lot of info about it here at Tripawds. so this is good to know.
