I have started a dogblog (you'll have to go see rooster tripaweds blog     http://threeleg.....pawds.com/    I have been taking his adventure and trying to relay it to folks from the dogs point of view and add a little humor into it ,as we all need a laugh to get us through these trying times in life ( his about him story is as such ........Hey I.m Rooster .I am a Great Pyrenees -Mareema cross Im five years old and was born in the Illinois Valley of southern Oregon. Im now living in the badlands of the Cuyama valley in California. I am a trained and registered service dog for my pet human who has been confined to a wheelchair for 26 years. This month (Dec. 7th) i was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma which is a rapid growing bone cancer ,but given that it was caught early they were able to stave off the effects by amputating my right front leg, (Dec. 16th)now im hop-walking a bit and getting stronger every day . Next in line is a bit of chemo and they say will increase my chances of survival and given the fact that I’m young ,strong and fit make it all look promising . So here goes the adventure................. So if you would like something to peruse ,and would like to comment on his adventures ,feel free to check him out and see just what all the fuss is about .  David (the pet) <img class="sfsmiley" title="cool" onclick="sfjLoadSmiley('sf-cool.gif', 'cool', 'http://tripawds.....&#039;, 'cool', '1');" src="../../wp-content/sp-resources/forum-smileys/sf-cool.gif" alt="cool" />

Welcome Rooster (and pet Dad David!)!

So glad you made your way over to the forums!  It's where the action is!  And we love humor!!!  We thrive on humor!

I'm so sorry to hear about Rooster's OSA!  That's so unfair!  He's a beautiful dog!

May I ask if I'm not being rude why you are confined to a wheelchair ?  I'm really not being nosey!  (I'm typically nosey but not in this case! smile)

Sending you guys lots of good thoughts!

I have been a Paraplegic for 27 years as the result of a 4x4ing accident that left me sitting in a wheelchair looking out at life. Well we decided early on (having always wanted ,since a child to be a mountain man) to move to the mountains from the coastal California city i lived and worked in at a construction trade . So I moved to southern Oregon and became a mountain man and lived raising my own food ,on the hoof as well as in the garden and supplemented it with some light hunting and fishing. Well that life on the side of a mountain in a wheelchair kinda wore my body down , and after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis I was forced to move to a dryer level place ( a mountain mans nightmare ) so with family in the southern California area i found a piece of sweet gentle peace in the badlands of Cuyama Valley. I have always had service dogs, but just called them dogs or by their names ,and have been through a few over the years( I always thought it would have been really neat to have been able to get a dog when you were a kid , and keep it all your life .Having it live through out your adventure) .This one here my smartest though shyest partner in crime is Rooster a 5 year old great Pyrenees ,Mareema cross .  His mother and father worked on a goat and sheep ranch, and he has been the smartest dog i think i have ever had. At ten weeks he knew eight different hand signs as well as voice commands ,and has outwitted me many the time. I am not your typical wheelchair bound person and still to this day haul my own wood for the wood stove and tend to a garden and fruit trees and race around the country on a Russian motorcycle with a sidecar and Rooster. So i hope this answers your question and as you have noticed i love to ramble on,so go check out Roosters page          http://threeleg.....pawds.com/       or check him out on face book       https://www.fac.....038;ref=ts I also have many other writings on facebook and music elsewhere under nonpedestrian. So have a good one and thanks for the comment...............

Rooster, you are one cool doggy (and handsome too).  I love your ride-- no better way for a dog to travel than in the sidecar of a Russian motorcycle. Been perusing your blog, will also have take it from the top.  Let me just say, we have become big fans and will be rooting for you.  Glad to hear you are tolerating the chemo well; suspect it helps that you are such a young boy.  How did you get your name?

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011

Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011.  Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs.  If love alone could have saved you…

Welcome Rooster and David!   I hope the healing is going well.  Sounds like Rooster is a strong, young boy who will do beautifully.

Rooster is used to be a helper dog for you ... how is he doing with letting you be his helper for awhile?  Baby is certainly no helper dog, but she is fiercely independent.  She really doesn't want me to help her with anything, so I'm trying to leave her alone to figure things out on her own, but I do sneak around watching her.  It's like following a kid on a first date.  She's doing really well, on her 16th day past surgery. Baby is showing me something new she can do every day.

May each day bring you closer to normalcy.

Wags and Smiles,

Judy and Baby

Yeah he still helps out ,he still gets into trouble from time to time but it has slowed him down lots .In the day he would pull me for miles ,when i would travel to the city he would pull me three or four miles a day( the one thing i think he misses most). Out here its lots of country and he loved chasing the ATV for miles and would go full bore for about three miles then slow to a trot and keep it up for 8 to 10 miles ,so i think he missed that being only able to hop down to the mail box which is about a 1/4 or so .But I think if he can keep this cancer at bay for a bit he will gain strength, tho never be his running same. Everything else he figured out in just a few days ,was up and hopping in the first few hours after surgery ,and his healing went well, with no complications . The Cammo T-shirt helped lots in keeping his incision clean and scratch free. He still crawls into the back of the 4x4 camper on the truck and climbs into the sidecar as well as the quad .I have even from time to time caught him way under the truck seeking shade and he crawled right back out which is a chore for even a four legged dog as big as him.

He got his name from his daddy, when i went to pick him out i got to meet his mom and dad and his dad strutted about with his tail held high and reminded me of a Rooster ,but  as with all my dogs in the past he has several nick names and much like children he knows you mean business when you use Rooster.

And yes its a bite humorous to bend the truth a little and have a little fun with most things in life .Not all obstacles have to be a problem , you can turn them into pleasure and live a life of an adventurer ......Look for more post to come ......nonpedestrian.

Welcome to you and Rooster. I'm so sorry to hear of his diagnosis. But there can still be hope and lots of good times.

We are definitely in the 'deal with stuff with humor' camp. I'll check out your blog!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Got that right! We really like your attitude. Osteosarcoma sucks (I'm so sorry you got diagnosed Rooster, and for your accident David) but it looks like you two are going to get through this latest challenge with all the spunk a pack needs to enjoy every minute together. I know we can learn a lot from you both.

Rooster and David, it's so good to see you here in the forums. We have been checking out your blog and enjoying your outlook on life, you give us lots to think about.

Where is the Cuyama valley? Is that near San Diego?

It is in Santa Barbara county though you have to go 75 miles over the mountains to get to get to the coast and can't get to Santa Barbara without driving 80 to 100 miles in any direction.
