My "bestest girl" Freckles and I got the word from the vet this morning that she will need to have a back leg removed. It is not cancer, but a growth that the vet said is deep rooted and the only way to make sure that it is all removed is to remove her leg. No day or time is set yet but I just wanted to say howdy to you all because I think we are going to need alot of support and information. I am so glad to find this site. Right now I am most interested in any info about getting the house ready and what to expect in the next few weeks.

Freckles! Nice to meet your human's bestest girl!! Sorry you have to be here but, under the circumstances there is no better place to be!!

I know to hear the word "amputation" is scary and your head is spinning right now. You've probably already done e ough research to know that dog do really, really well with three legs. Recovery is a little rough for about two weeks. It IS major surgery and, like any surgery, it does have risks. Obviously, all of us here took that risk in order to give our dogs the best chance at a pain free life.

Also, the vast majority of us here are here because of a cancer diagnosis for our dogs and cats. Itsq really refreshing to know that is not the czse with Freckles!

Our Admin Guy has given you all the great links to inform and educate you on "everything tripawd"!

Right off the bat, if you have hardwood floors you can place non-slip scatter rugs for traction . If you jave stars for in and out, you may want to build a ramp for easy access. Most rear amps. have no problem going down steps, but going up can be difficult.

And get ready for more spoiling and loving than you ever thought possible! You cannot help but spoil a tripawd!!

We are right by your sidenthis whole journey. Take some deep breaths, do your research and knownthatnyou are doing what's best for your "bested
girl"!

Hugs to all!

Welcome to you and Freckles.  Yes, please, more info.  Dog, cat? How big? How old? pictures?

I remember very well when I was told that my pug Maggie needed an amputation. I was expecting a surgery to remove the tumor, but after the vet said 'amputation' I don't think I heard anything else.

Let us know what questions we can answer- we have all been where you are now.
