My wonderful yellow Lab Polly was diagnosed last March with canine hemangiosarcoma in her right front leg after her first surgery to remove and biopsy the growth below her elbow, that I found on her in January 2013.

As we descended into the cancer realm one again with her, ( she had a mast cell tumor caught early in 2011 at aged 6), I was devastated by this diagnosis. I had just lost my black Lab less than 2 years before from a ruptured splenic hemangiosarcoma, and she only lived 46 days after having her spleen removed.

Our surgeon recommended an oncologist, so we did and had initial comprehensive tests, ultrasounds, blood work, series of x-rays, and everything was clear in her body. We decided to pursue full bombarding chemo over the next 4-5 months, 12 rounds of combined doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide.

The first treatments were pure horror as she got so very, very sick from everything and ended up in the vet E.R. 2 times from severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Between my regular vet, and oncologist vet, we had to come up with an extensive pro-active plan to ward off the extreme effects of chemo, and by the 3rd treatment, did have it managed pretty well.

After her chemo was finally over in late July, I was very happy, and her next round of comprehensive tests were once again, great. It was very short lived, however.....within 1 month of finishing chemo, I found another small growth in her right front leg once again.

The surgeon, oncologist, my husband and myself decided to do immediate surgery again to remove the tumor. This time, the small tumor turned out to be completely invasive of her entire leg, and the surgeon could not remove it all. Came back again as hemangiosarcoma, which I fully expected, but was still very upset. Once we got the 2nd definite diagnosis, she was back in asap to have her leg removed.

So on October 3rd, 2013, she became a 3-legged girl. She did extremely well with the surgery and bounced back immediately with learning her new life on 3 legs, she never missed a beat. Our surgeon was very happy to give us the news that absolutely no cancer cells were found in any of the huge amount of nodes, muscle and other tissue taken from her shoulder for biopsy after surgery.

We just reached the 3-month mark of her amputation on the 3rd of January, and she is going to her regular vet today for some needed blood work and Rabies vaccine that is due. We have had to do regular blood work on her, every 3 months or less since 2007 when she had just turned 3 years old and was stricken with Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia. Almost lost her life to that, and took close to a year and a half to get her healthy again. She had only one or two downturns with diminished blood platelets but got her back on track with the drug of choice, pred.

So, as of right now, she seems to be doing well, and we will make a trip back to her oncologist for follow-up comprehensive exams soon. I was just wondering if anyone here has had to deal with this type of hemangiosarcoma?

I do realize that this can pop up again anywhere in her body, but we are just taking one day at a time and enjoying her doing well right now. Any help of other's experience of this would be helpful.

In a way, I just want to live in as much denial as I can while she is doing well, because my days are less stressful that way. Thanks so much for this great on-line group and forums, etc.

Hi Bonnie and Polly, welcome.

First HOPPY AMPUVERSARY! Three is the magic number! clap

I'm really sorry you're dealing with hemangio, but so far so good, she's doing GREAT! And I don't think you're in denial at all, it's called following her lead and "Being More Dog." Living for the moment, making each day count and realizing that tomorrow isn't a guarantee for anyone are some unexpected and life-changing lessons that cancer teaches us. As you've already realized, it does help minimize the stress.

Meanwhile, fear not. Others here have dealt with it. Here is a Forums search for "Hemangiosarcoma" that may help. And in fact today we wrote about Butchey Hudson's hemangio treatment using mushroom therapy. You have great timing!

Thanks for joining us, we look forward to learning all about you two and helping however we can.

Thank you, Jerry. I did see the story earlier today on facebook about Butchey. I have also researched Tripawds for any stories relating to hemangiosarcoma, and this cancer, as it presented itself in my Polly is just very rare. I have searched on-line repeatedly, looking anywhere and everywhere and came up empty. I will continue to stay with Tripawds, because at least there are a few similar experiences here that I can read, and I also love reading all the other stories of many other beloved pets going through their own battles and hopefully winning. My heart breaks for those that have lost their battle.

Thanks for your feedback Nicki. Please consider joining so your future posts won't need approval. I appreciate your reminder; I forgot to mention Bonnie, that if your vet hasn't mentioned it or isn't up on vaccine guidelines for dogs with cancer, avoiding them is best. Here is a discussion about why that is:

Vaccines and Our Pets

and

If you've already done it please don't beat yourself up. Many Tripawd pawrents didn't discover this until after vaccines were given. But do keep it filed away for future knowledge.

Did not know this info regarding vaccines and canine cancer, however, due to my Polly's Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia she developed at age 3, she does not receive any vaccines at all since then except for Rabies every 3 years. We believe vaccines (not rabies though) caused her to crash with ITP, so no regular vaccines since. I also wonder if her development and treatment of this condition somehow has contributed to her developing cancers. She has had 2 separate cancer diagnoses since the age of 6. We just keep fighting till we can't any longer.

Thanks Sally and Happy Hannah, words of support are a great thing for the soul and heart. My Polly has been doing great, but unfortunately, while at her regular vet appointment on Monday, we found another lump/growth on her right rear leg. I didn't want to post this yet, because we are giving a few days to see how we want to proceed with it. My head is spinning a bit so I need to get a more clear head. There is always the possibility of it being benign, but with Polly's history...........I am very frightened.
I will check into posting pictures on the website here, although to be perfectly honest, I am terrible at negotiating tech stuff on the computer. I have posted several pictures on Tripawds Facebook Page because that is so much easier. The last one I posted was of Polly playing in our first snow of the year here where we live when she reached her 3 month mark of her amputation. That was about a week or so ago. She has so much fun in the snow, I am glad I was able to figure out how to do a video on her.
Thanks again for the wonderful support here, it is very much appreciated.

I'm glad you found his site Sally. What is the name of his clinic? I only see one called Mount Carmel Animal Hospital.

The Tripawds Resources Page has a lot of holistic oriented information, just scroll down and you'll see a section called "Holistic, Alternative Medicine and Prescription Drugs and Your Dog" where it has a link so you can find a holistic vet near you.

Thank you so much, Sally and Jerry....the support means more than you know. We live about 45 minutes from Mt. Carmel Animal Hospital, and the one owner is Paul Fox. I also googled Dr Michael Fox and he has an extensive website. I will have to take some time to sit and look through it. I did have a wonderful holistic vet that I also had immense pleasure working with when I worked for my vet hospital for several years, but left to start my own small pet sitting business. She unfortunately lost her own battle to cancer almost 2 years ago, and what a huge and heartbreaking loss it was for all that worked with her, and were friends with her, but especially her pet clients. She would search the ends of the earth and beyond for any pet to find an answer and or treatment. Life just isn't fair all the way around sometimes. You can believe, I am a much better person just by knowing her, working with her, and befriending her.

I will chat with my vet, and husband about holistic treatments because I have seen first hand what alternative medicine can accomplish. Taking one step at a time, and one day at a time.....that's all we can do, I guess.
