Hi everyone!  Bailey, my 8 year old English Mastiff, is currently in surgery now to have her front right leg amputated due to osteosarcoma.  Obviously, it is upsetting to find out that your dog has this disease.  I just want to thank everyone on here and the creators of this site.  This site is a huge tool and is very comforting when dealing with this disease and amputation.  I am very well prepared and at peace with the decision to amputate.  I am very well prepared for what to expect and I look forward to dealing with the issue head on now and her moving on with a great life as a tripawd!  I am glad this day has come so she doesn't have to deal with the pain anymore.  She has never had any other health issues and all of her tests have comeback great.  I have no doubt that she will be relieved that the pain is gone and will recover quickly.

Special thanks to Tazzie!  I am sorry to hear that she has passed.  Seeing her story of triumph and video made the decision easier.  There weren't too many stories about English Mastiffs (that I had found).  I am glad that I found her story so early on in my research as well as this site.  Thanks again to everyone on here and to the creators for creating such a wonderful site!

Welcome, and so sorry to hear that Bailey has to go through this journey. She will do well, as so many here do! She will no longer be in pain, and won't even know that she is missing a leg.

It sounds as though you've done your research on this site, so don't think I can add to it...other than make sure you get lots of rest. These next few weeks are the toughest. Take one day at a time, and try to be strong when you are in the same room with Bailey. Pups take their lead from us, so if you act normal, they will too.

Sending lots of pawsitive thoughts & prayers your way, along with many, many golden hugs!

Wishing Bailey a speedy recovery.  And yes, you're right:  this website is great.  It was a lifesaver for me when our boy was diagnosed.  Good luck in your journey, and keep us udpated on Bailey's progress.

Welcome aboard 🙂

Sorry Bailey's having to go through this but I bet you both will do fine. You sound very prepared and strong for her.

Keep that pawsitive attitude up and give us an update when you can.

Maddie and I'll keep you in our prayers.

I am glad that Tazzie's video helped you out.  She did very well!  Let me know if you have any concerns or questions.  It is scary but these big dogs can do great (see Nova and Cemil).

Awwww shucks, thanks! aw-shucks

As we like to say, if it wasn't for everypawdy taking the time to share their stories, this community would be nothing. We're so glad you found comfort in Tazzie's story. She was an amazing pup as I know that Bailey must be too. And you sound like great peeps for going that extra mile to give her a better quality of life.

It's a scary decision but as you can see, there is hope. While each story is different in how it plays out as far as longevity goes, one thing we know for sure is that never has anyone here said they've regretted the decision.

We're pulling for your girl and send our love and prayers for a good recovery. Whatever we can do to help please let us know OK?

Thanks everyone.  Her surgery went "beautifully" (quoting the vet) and better than he had expected.  He is very experienced with 28 yrs under his belt at very reputable hospital.  She got out 2 hours ago and is now waking up.  I'm leaving work now to go see her.  The new journey begins!  I will keep updating as the days go by.

Welcome to the family. A good attitude on your part is worth a million bucks for Bailey's recovery. Expect ups and downs for the next couple weeks, but once she get past that rough stage of healing you will be amazed. Don't be surprised if she looks great when she come s home and seems to crash a day or 2 later, thats where you start holding on for the ride. Sounds like evrything is going well, here's to a good recovery, Paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan

Welcome Bailey and people,

I am glad to read her surgery went so well!  That is wonderful, and it sounds like you have a great attitude in facing this.  It helps alot.

I look forward to reading about Bailey and maybe you will post a picture.  I have an english mastiff mix (not my tripawd) and I love them.

Thanks for all of the comments!

Yesterday when I went to go see her was heartbreaking to say the least.  If I can recommend to anyone do not go as they are waking up from the anesthesia.  She was so scared, confused, and disoriented.  She was trying to escape the pen and kept falling.  I went into the pen with her and she crawled back in and we layed with her.  That didn't discourage me (worry a little, yes) because I knew it was the anasthesia and it needed time to wear off.  So to everyone who has yet to go thru it, wait until the anastesia is worn off and he/she is coherent.

However, today was a totally different story.  When I went in to see her she started wagging her tail and panting.  She hopped right up.  She was happy as a clam.  They barely aided her as she walked out.  Alll she wanted to do was get the heck out of there.  It was uplifting and encouraging.  I've read all of the stories about everyone's dog doing something similar to this.  But it is truly amazing to see!  She is home now and enjoyed a couple popsicles.  Now she is laying on her bed and sleeping.  It's amazing how resilient they are.  We can learn a lot from these wonderful creatures!

I'll upload a photo and post it soon.

Whew, you scared me for a minute there. I'm surprised they allowed you to be there so soon after surgery, most docs don't for those very reasons. Excellent advice, thank you!

Popsicles? Did someone say popsicles?

My friend and Tripawds.com inspawration Moose loved them too!
