Monday, April 13, 2009, I brought Abby to the Vet earlier than her annual check up due to a persistant limp.  The limp grew steadily worse although this did not stop her from doing all she loves.  A year ago she had broken the same leg (front left) so I continued to dismiss the limp thinking it was arthritis, weather changes...  I also dismissed my gut feeling due to accusations that I was "paranoid/over protective".   Well needless to say she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma.  By Wednesday of that week she had her leg and shoulder removed.  Abby is a Pit mix from a shelter so I'm not sure of her age, but it has to be around 11.   She has an incredible spirit and is a beautiful girl!  I want to keep her as happy and healthy as possible.  I'm reaching out because this is all so new to me (I don't even know what questions to ask)...please share your wisdoms with me so that I may in turn share them with Abby.  We are still waiting for the results of the testing to determine the next step in treatment.  The staples and suchers come out next Wednesday.   This isn't a "club" that I ever wanted her to join; however, I am grateful to have the understanding and kindness of those that understand.  Thanks.

This isn't a club any of us wanted to join.  But oh my what a wonderful place you have found for info and support.  No one knows like we do what you are going through.

My pittie turned 9 in September and was diagnosed with osteosarcoma the Monday before Thanksgiving last year.  The recovery period is trying for you and for them, but you'll be amazed how quickly Abby adapts.  Trouble was hopping around in the house looking for me within 2 days.  Let them do what they want to try as long as it isn't something you think will harm them.  They need lots of rest and lots of love as they recover.  Some of them do not react well to the pain meds, but fortunately they come off them pretty soon.

Welcome to the group and keep us posted of Abby's progress.

Jodi,

We too are sorry about what Abby and you are going through, but are also so glad you found us here and joined our community. As you can see, we have so many wonderful members like hugapitbull (thanks Shanna!), who are ready to offer encouragement and support whenever you need it.

Wow, it's truly surprising at the number of pittis joining the Tripawd club recently, isn't it? We've always heard that OS is a big dog disease, but seems like all bets are off now. We must stay hopeful and help find a cure fast.

Jodi, you are obviously a great pawrent just by virtue of the fact that you take Abby for an annual checkup (you'd be surprised at how many pawrents don't). You will do just fine as you walk this journey together, we know it.

I think that what you will find is that you will learn much more from Abby than you ever will from us, as you see how she recuperates and adapts to life on three legs. We've found no greater teachers than our dogs when it comes to living life to the fullest despite adversities. Follow her lead, and be her pack leader, and the two of you can get through anything.

We always suggest people start reading about what to expect, here, and here. Go through the videos for inspiration (Trouble, we are working on yours today!), read our health tips page, and as always, if you have any questions, post them in the forums and you'll have answers in no time!

Always remember that any decisions you make should be based on how you and Abby feel about them. Don't let anyone convince you that you "should' be doing something a certain way, or pursuing certain therapies, or whatever, because everybody's situation is different. Whatever you decide, we will back you 100 percent.

Good luck. Hang in there, the next couple of weeks will be ruff but it does get better.

So, Jodi, you're already half-way through the worst part!  How has Abby surprised you so far? My Cemil also lost his left front leg and shoulder 3 months ago Sunday--it took him a little longer than the 2 weeks to get back up to speed, but he did it.  He was just barking at me for being in front of the computer instead of being with him, so I told him I was writing to another Tripawd just like him and what would he say?  He said, "Hang in there, buddy, it gets better."   That's how pawsitive dogs are. We all understand the shock and horror at the diagnosis and amputation...did I do the right thing?...will she be able to--?  But if you watch what Abby does and how she adjusts, you'll be amazed.  Let us know how it goes, and share your worries here.  Mostly, be strong for her and let her show you the "make today the best it can be" philosophy.  When the stitches are out and she doesn't need the pain meds anymore, I bet you'll have lots of pawsitive stories.

Listen to Cemil ... what Abby needs most right now is rest and time to rebuild her strength. Take it one day at a time and she'll be hopping along before you know it. We look forward to your updates. No one wants to be in the tripawd club, but we're glad you found us!
