Thrilled to hear that Tungsten is doing so well after surgery! Tucker had his on Thursday and I thought he was a star patient, but wow! Good job both of you! Your first night home sounds much more pleasant than ours. Tucker didn't respond well to the meds used during surgery, so coming off of them made for an extremely stressful night. Since then, like your experience, it's been better than anticipated (keeping fingers crossed it continues).

BTW, I'm moving to wherever you live - $200! What?!! You'd faint if you heard the pricing in SoCal.

Wishing you a continued smooth recovery!

Nancy...glad that tucker is doing also doing well.  I thing that Tungsten is just so relieved to have the painful leg off that no pain he might be feeling could compare to the pain he was in.  We have had two peaceful nights, no issues during the day.  He got up this morning to go out on his own...Hubby carried him down the stairs off the porch. Even had a bit of a poop.  So far there has been no need for the Tramadol...amazing.

We live in Cookeville Tennessee...midway between Nashville and Knoxville.  I cant even imagine what it would be in southern Cal.

Wishing you all a good day with Tucker.

By this afternoon Tungsten was negotiating the porch stairs all on his own, both up and down.  They are not as steep as house stairs, which he wont be doing for quite some time yet.  Otherwise, he is so much more alert than he has been for a long time (at least 2 months).  Still no distress from any pain as it would seem. clap

Yep, as long as the pain is gone that is all they care about.  Tungsten is recovering well...has not has the need (as far as I can tell) for any pain meds, which keeps him more alert.  He lined up with the rest of the pack for breakfast this morning, something he has not done in quite a while.  I went from a cheap food to Diamond Naturals lamb and rice formula when we heard of his diagnosis....he does not like it, so we have had to supplement it with other "tastier" food, albeit not better for him.  Today I got the Victor grain free with glucosemine (green bag) and it is beef flavored...hope he eats it.  We will be starting him on his k9 Immunity and keeping him on his Essiac instead of going the chemo route.

It is great when they start returning to their normal routine - like queuing up for food!   I was thrilled the first time Otis hopped over to the window to look out at the street in front of our house.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Daily functions, eating and drinking still going great.  No redness or swelling at the suture site.  Tungsten did begin a bit of panting and drooling so we figured he might be in a bit of pain.  At least he has the tramadol to take the bite off.  BTW...he absolutely hates the cone of shame , as do we....wish we had the no-bite collar.  Oh well, it will only be for another week then the stitches come out.

So glad to hear Tungsten is doing so well! He's quite a spunky guy!

Tungsten is a very stoic boy! Gllad you recognized his pain signals so quickly. It's still very early in recovery from this major surgery to not have any pain meds on a consistent basis. It's hard to play "catch up"'once the pain gets a head start.

While watching him, you can take the cone off and try a tee shirt and see if that helps deter him from biting at the stitches.

Good job Tungsten! Keep in keepin' on! Recovery will be done before you know it!

Hugs!

So happy to hear about Tungsten's progress, and I am sure you are also feeling some relief.  Mr. Gibbs didn't require a cone, we did keep a t-shirt on him while the incision healed.  We watched him very closely and the only time I noticed he was trying to lick the area was towards the end when it was scabbing over.

We also kept Mr. Gibbs on a daily dose of Tramadol, one half in the morning and the other half in the evening.  It helped him to relax and I am sure helped with easing the pressure of putting so much weight on his good front paw.

Awesome job Tungsten, you will feel so much better very soon!

Hugs,

Mr. Gibbs Mom (Chris) Dad is traveling.

Thanks everybody for the great words of encouragement.  Tungsten is getting 1 tramadol in the morning and one in the evening...we may cut that down to 1/2 for each dose if his pain subsides.  I'm sure he has a bit of itching with the hair growing back in.  We are able to watch him and sit with him a majority of the day, so he only has to wear the cone when we are not able to watch him closely.  I have not yet tried the t-shirt, but do have a doggie diaper we might consider using that might cover the entire wound area....might try it out tomorrow or overnight tonight.

Really nice to read the updates on Tungsten.  So glad he is doing well and recovering so quickly.  He is a rock star.  Sounds like having a pack to hang with is helpful!  Really really glad for you.

Tungsten has a bit of dried blood (or scabbing) that tends to crack and give a few drops of blood when he gets up to go outside and such.  Has anybody tried using neosporin or vetrycin to keep them from cracking?  It's not too bad and usually just one or two drops that I can dab with a towel, not a constant bleed or anything.  Doesnt appear to be coming from where the skin is re-bonding back together.

Hi, Yes, I used neosporin on my Bandit.  Our vet actually recommended it.  And it made a big difference.  Keeping you both in our thoughts.  Deb and Bandit

Not a vet and not giving Vet advice. From what you've described, I would just use a warm towel for now and stay away from any product.

Nurse Donna (Murphy's mom) may chime in and offer advice.

Is it coming from the stitches? Sounds like the skin is bonding just fine. A tiny drop or two from the stitch itself shouldn't be a concern unless, of course, there's any sign of obvious infection.

Give Tungsten a big hug!

Oh, just saw Baby Bandit's post. So there ya' have it...a Vet advice for Neosporin! (For some crazy reason I was thinking that wasn't usually suggested.)
