Hello Tripawds,

My rabbit recently fractured a rear leg due to sarcoma (most likely soft tissue) weakening his bone and/or tissue. He is 8.5 years old (average lifespan is 8-12) and otherwise in great health.

Does anyone here have experience amputating under similar circumstances? Other species are welcome, as this is very rare for rabbits.

I am very concerned about recurrence. The vet said it would be a 50/50 gamble, but the few studies I have found put the odds for recurrence higher.

All species are welcome here!

Search these forums and you will find plenty of discussions regarding soft tissue sarcoma amputation. Search all blogs here for more articles and veterinarian video interviews on the topic too.

With clean margins, recurrence of the cancer can be kept to a minimum, and chemotherapy may or may not be effective, depending upon the type of sarcoma – chondrosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, etc. Also check out the recent intralesional chemo and electrochemotherapy videos for other treatment options:
