Nosey's amputation in question due to monocyte count

Hello there,

Nosey's amputation of his rear left leg is scheduled for Thursday. We went in Saturday for pre-op tests and his lungs were clear but his blood tests showed off the chart monocyte count (which has to do with white blood cell count).  My vet sent the tests to WSU Vet hospital (about 20 minutes away) and we are waiting to hear back from them. The monocyte level could mean the malignant cells have spread beyond the tumor. Or maybe not. Or maybe the WSU hospital won't know.

This is kind of like when a mechanic can't figure out what is wrong with your car, but much worse of course. Anyone have experience with this type of situation?

On a separate note, I got the 3 legs and a spare book and every time I have a question, I check the book before posting my question here now and EVERY time - the answer is there (except for monocytes). That book is so, so helpful.

Thanks,

Kelly

What type of tumor again?  Jill's white blood cell count was high, but that was because her tumor had erupted outside of her skin and got infected....not sure that helps much, but thought I'd throw it out there.........

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. According to the vet, Nosey has "a mesenchymal cell tumor that is too undifferentiated to diagnose more specifically". The path report also said there was previous hemorrage most likely due to tumor-associated vascular damage. There's no eruption outside or infection but maybe some sort of internal eruption. HIs monocyte count was 7.91.

WHo knows?  I'm just hoping that the WSU experts will know what's up - uncertainty sucks. It's hard to adjust mentally when things are so up in the air. Will post the news when I get it. HUgs to Jill.

Yeah, it's a crazy journey alright. Don't have info. on the specifics for Nosey, jus wanted to send you my support and let you know we are all se ding you good thoughts.

The uncertainty, the ups and downs, do start to be less worrisome after a bit. It just becomes another day at the "zoo"!

Sorry you're experiencing this extra topsy turvy right before surgery. It does just seem like it's somehow nfection related.....but there's nothing logical about this journey!

We'll look forward to yourudate.

Extra treats for Nosey tonight!! Hey Nosey! I heard steak helps with the blood tests too!!! Nosey gets "steak treats"!

Hugs to all!

Kelly,

First thank you soooo much for the great feedback on our book, you made us do a happy dance!

Now, your vet sounds awesome, I'm glad to hear that the lab results are being reviewed at WSU (wait, Wisconsin State or Washington? I'm a little partial to the Badgers!). In either case it sounds like Nosey has a great team rooting for her.

I'm really looking forward to hearing about the monocytes. As you've just learned, we don't have all the answers but when new information is posted here we definitely put it into the book eventually. Thank you for bringing this up. I wish I could help with your question but I have no experience and don't want to try to guess. Please give us details when you know more. And give Nosey a big smooch from us.
