Hi all,
I've been a mess today after talking to the vet and (after needle aspiration and biopsy) confirmed my kitty of 13 years, Mocha, has cancer in his right front foreleg. He seems to thinks Mocha is a good candidate for amputation as he's very healthy and the type of cancerous tumor is known to be 95% localized and most likely wouldn't come back elsewhere, unless of course it's already done so which they would do a chest x-ray prior to amputating. My question is who else has an older cat that has a limb amputated and how did they do? Mocha is not super active, just the occasional play and beating up his 6 yr old "sister" and laser light fun. He is otherwise a normal, loving, sweet, social boy that chats a lot and loves his full body massages, even after his biopsy a few days ago. He's of course less active since the biopsy since he has stitches but still has a great appetite and demeanor. I just feel so bad for him that he's in pain and limping and don't want to prolong his life for me if the consensus of amputating an older animal is not favorable. I'm calling my vet again tomorrow to talk about procedure because today after hearing the inevitable news I couldn't think straight. I'm also calling a couple of other recommended vet hospitals for quotes and such just because I live in a high income area but don't necessarily make that income, so I may have to take him a few miles away to save a couple hundred bucks if I choose to amputate. If you have a kitty that has successfully survived an amputation at an advanced age I would appreciate feedback. Thanks so much! I will continue to read more of the site in the meantime.
Hi Mocha and family, welcome and thanks for joining us. I'm really sorry to hear you're faced with this tough situation, it's something none of us ever expect and it's hard to decide but we'll be here to support you no matter which path you choose.
There's been quite a few kitties here who've gone through amputation at an advanced age. Check out this list of our TriKitty Bloggers and scroll through their posts to see how they did. Here's one thing we've seen over and over again; cats, no matter their age, generally recover faster and overall do much better than dogs when they lose a limb. Sssh! Don't tell the pooches I said that, but it's true. Sure, there are some exceptions and every cat is different but overall, most do great.
It's super smart of you to get multiple opinions. Where are you located? Maybe we can help refer you to an affordable clinic. You may want to check out these posts about finding a clinic for surgery:

In the future we hope to have more specific information for cats (it's only been in the last year or so that we've had quite a few join us so we're gathering lots of info as folks share their experiences), but for now their blogs are one of our best resources, as well as the feedback from the great community here in our Discussion Forums. Your story here adds to the collective wisdom so thank you again for joining us (oh your future posts won't require approval).

Thanks so much Jerry for the links, I'm looking through them now. There's some great questions that I will ask the vet when I call today. I'm in the San Diego area if anyone has info on clinics nearby. Thanks all!! And Mocha is doing well today BTW...he loves his tuna
Marnie
Hi Marnie and Mocha!
I am Jill's Mom - she is now 22 months post amputation for bone cancer. Do you know what type of cancer Mocha has?
I can tell you kitties do GREAT on three legs. I was devastated when they told me Jill would have to have her leg amputated, but seeing her today, she does just as great on three legs as she did on four!
Definitely visit her blog - I have TONS of videos and pictures that I took throughout her recover (jillsjourney.tripawds.com)
Jill was 8 at the time of her amputation and is now 10. She is defintely very inactive though - just lies around wanting belly rubs all day.
I am in the chat room right now if you want to come on over and ask questions! I'm here to help!
xoxo,
Erica
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013.
