Got the lab results back for Maddy.  There are no infectious agents present in her bones or tissue.  No cancer.  No osteomyelitis.  They did find degenerative arthritis and pododermatitis.  Soooo, we are ordering a supportive boot for her, a doggie trail boot.  The vet wants to see if this will lessen her pain, as he feels the constant pressure on her foot is the main cause of the inflammation.  Maddy is happy to have the bandage off, and so is Mommy!  We are not at the amputation stage just yet!

ALRIGHTY, NOT THAT PIECE OF CRAP DISEASE AND NOT A PESKY INFECTION!!!   YAAAAAAAAAY!!! 🙂 🙂

Really hope the boot idea helps!   Did the Vet offer any suggestions like Adquan I jections or anynither "treatment" for the arthritis?

Give that sweet girl an extra treat for is, okay?

Hugs

oh gosh...so much has happened.  We got the test results back.  No infectious processes were found.  Scientific results: Mild to moderate proliferative enthesitis with mild periosteal proliferation, and mild chronic lymphoplasmacytic pododermatitis.  What???

Well, I had to rush maddy to the vet last week because when I got home, she could barely walk.  Something was wrong with her other front leg.  So after an xray, they noted one toe is swollen on the other front paw, with some minor changes to the bone.  WTF?!?!?! Whatever this is, is ramping up big time.  She is on anti inflammatories, antibiotics, and gabapentin.  It is awful to watch her try to walk when both feet hurt.    The specialist is hoping she just hurt the toe compensating for the other paw, but I don't think so.  I am at a complete loss as to what this could be?  If it is the same issue, we will need to put her down, as we cannot amputate yet another toe! I am heartbroken because she is fine other than this issue- happy, eating, pooping, etc... How do I possibly put her down knowing that she hasn't turned that corner that we all know too well.

I read something about an immune disease where the body's own white blood cells attack inadvertently, causing swelling and bone erosion. It seems like it is a really aggressive arthritis.  Anyone have any experience with erosive immune mediated polyarthritis.  This is what it sounds like, but not in any other places other than her toes/feet.

I get sick to my stomach thinking about having to put her to sleep.  She is such a great pup!!!!

sadsadsad It with deep sadness that I need to tell you that we need to put Maddy down.  This Saturday will be her last day here on Earth.  Whatever was ravaging her left front paw, has spread to her right paw.  There is nothing we can do, as we will not put her through another amputation.  She can barely walk now, but still manages to wag her tail.  So, we are going to spoil her rotten this week.  She never had people food, so she has now had steak, donuts, ice cream.  We took her to our local ice cream shop where they sell doggie ice cream tonight.  She chowed it!!! It breaks my heart and it was THE hardest decision that I ever had to make.  But I know that she is suffering.  I want to thank everyone who offered advice and kind words to Maddy and I.

Oh noooo, our dear sweet Maddy.  I'm just sooooo sorry to hear this.

We feel like the medical community with all their vast knowledge and tools shoukd be able to figure everything out.  Obviously, as many of us know here on the site, there are still so many things that have no answers, no solution.

It just breaks my heart to know you are having to go through this.

You need to know, with absolute certainly, that you have left no stone unturned!!!  You have done EVERYTHING possible for your sweet Maddy!!!  You have gone above and beyond what many humans would do for their pup!

You are making a courageous decision out of an UNBREAKABLE bo d of love and devotion.  Maddy would expect nothing less.

But what's important is right now you have your Maddy by your side and, in spite of her challenges, she's having a blast with all the spoiling and loving!!  All Maddy knows is she's living a lifetime of eternal joy with each moment she is with you!

Take @ots a d lots of loctures and we would love it if you share some here.  Especially photos of her stufding her face with junk food a d pastries and ice cream and cake and steak and cheese pizza and a couple of M&Ms!

As hard as it is, and it's really hard, continue to stay fully present in the moment.  There will be way too much time to grieve later, but for now, continue to celebrate this wonderful dog with non-stop spoili g and loving.....just like you've done everyday since she picked you!

Lots and lots of love

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

This is just so sad, I am sorry that things aren't better. Did the vets ever get a final answer on the condition? It's crazy how quickly that happened. What a heartbreaker, how I wish it had been able to get under control.

Please give your sweetie lots of extra lovin' from all of us this week. The coming days will be hard but focus on making the best of every moment as it happens, and you won't have any regrets. Keep on spoiling that girl with all she wants and then some. Take photos and let us know about her adventures OK? Those sweet eyes of hers are just irresistible.

I'm so sorry for the way things worked out. My heart goes out to you. If you want to talk, we are here for you.

I'm just now reading Maddy's whole story. I don't have much to add other than I was getting frustrated reading about her condition and the inability to figure out exactly what's going on with her feet. I can't imagine the frustration you must be feeling. Such a gorgeous girl. I hope you can find some peace during this difficult time.

My heart is breaking for your family and Maddy. She really was a sweet girl and a fighter. I'm so sorry that her body has been so irreversibly damaged. Sending lots of love your way through this. ❤

I loved life as a tripawd for over three years following right forelimb amputation due to an aggressive and recurrent hemangiopericytoma. I reclaimed my place among the gods and valkyries in Valhalla on November 11th, 2020. My parents miss me tremendously, but I know they'll keep me in their hearts forever... and don't worry, I've approved my mom's use of my Tripawds account.

Sorry that I have been AWOL.  Grieving has been so hard!  The specialist said it could have been a lupus type disease that caused the damage to the small bones in her feet.  He said we could still amputate, but that was not an option.  She could not be a dog.  She couldn't walk well, let alone run. That is no life for a dog.  We spoiled her rotten the last week of her life. She got ice cream, donuts, steak and many other human foods that she never got.  The morning of the euthanasia, we took her for a walk down the street.  Something we had not been able to do in months, but knowing it was her last day with us, we knew we had to.  As much pain as she was in, she walked all the way to the turnaround and back.  She stopped often to lay down, but she just would not stop.  I know she really enjoyed it.  I could not go on the walk, as it hurt me to watch her.   The first pic is her enjoying some doggie ice cream.  The middle pic was her playing with her toy the last week.  I mean look at that smile!  This picture made it even harder for us because she looks so happy.

I know that we did everything possible, but I feel guilty that we could not figure it out sooner for Maddy!  We were with her in her last moments, which are forever etched in my mind.  But there was no way I wasn't going to be there with her!!!!  I know we made the best possible decision out  of LOVE.  I know that she is pain free now and able to run and jump like a dog should be able to do.

What bittersweet memories, those photos are priceless. Thank you for sharing her last week with us, that was definitely a hard thing to go through and write about I'm sure. But YES you did do right by her, you allowed her to live her last days with love and when her body was no longer strong enough, you set her spirit free with gentle kindness and respect. Nobody, animal or human, could ever ask for a better way to transition on.

That saying about the harder we love, the harder we grieve, is accurate. It's a process that nobody gets out of but when we get through it, we see that the good times far outshine the sadder ones of the pet or person we loved so much. Maddy's life was not in vain nor was her cancer battle. It's a sneaky, tricky disease that even genius scientists cannot predict so please don't blame yourself OK? You gave Maddy all the love in you heart and she will pay you back again and again in so many beautiful ways.

If it helps, please do share more memories of your sweet girl in Coping with Loss OK? We are here for you.
