Oh good! I watch for Maggie's updates and am always thrilled when they continue to show some progress 🙂

And ya' know what? If a 10 1/2 yr "mature" Mastiff who is now a tripawd, who has arthritis, and had prior knee surgery, needs a little help getting up...help away!!! Mag is an amazing girl!

Give her a big smooch!

XOXOXOXOXO

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

Well, another milestone. The staples came out yesterday and Maggie continues to improve. Still not walking like I'd like her to and it seems to be a struggle, but I do see improvement. If she misses the yoga mat, she slips very easily. Bought her some booties that I really didn't care for as they tend to slip on her giant paws. Found some "grippers" that I've ordered and hope they help her on the wood and tile floors. Still have to keep her in her little playpen, but we're not quite at 2 weeks yet, so I guess that's OK. She's been a great patient and doesn't mind relaxing all day with just a few potty breaks. She likes to go outside to just lie either in the shade or the crazy-hot sun for a few minutes, but one of us is always with her as we have a pool and I don't trust her around it due to her unsteadiness.  I plan on blocking the pool off today so she can go out on her own again.

Awww Mag, you are such a sweetie...........and so well loved and cared for! 🙂

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR STITCH REMOVAL DAY! 🙂

My Hapoy Hannah lpved being a couch potato a dnd, like Maggie, loved lounging u der a shady tree or sunbathing in the hot sun! She would pant and pant, but loved that hot sun!

Don't know if you've tried PAWZ. They're sorta' ballons for their feet. Inexpensive but effective. You can't leave them in very long as the cuff part is tight to keep them on and they have no vents for breathable.

Does she seem to be able to maintain her stability as long as she is on the mats? How bout outside, is she stable on the grass?

For whatever it's worth, vets say it takes "about" two weeks to recover from the major surgery itself and "about" one month to get mobility issues worked out. Mag is still getting used to using different muscles. Big dogs can experience a bit more soreness and stiffness sometimes than smaller dogs.

And yes, it is still very early in recovery, yet she is doing extraordinarily well! 🙂 🙂

Thanks for the update! And good for you for recognizing "imlrovement" We learn during recovery every "little" improvement is a HUGE victory and needs to be celebrated! 🙂

Hugs to all!

Well, the "grippers" finally arrived and they're great. Maggie let me put them on her which kind of surprised me. They're snug on her paws (I got the biggest size) and they stay on. She was leery of walking on the wood, knowing that she slipped every time she had tried post-surgery, but after a few steps, she realized she wouldn't fall. We dismantled her barriers (chairs placed on their sides) removed all the quilts and towels and we're back to normal. Maggie had a great night sleeping on the floor next to our bed and is getting the hang of having the run of the house again. We're 2 days away from 3 weeks, which I knew to be a milestone. Maggie seems to be pain-free, happy and getting around better every day. Her fur is growing back nicely and the shaved area is harder and harder to see. The incision has healed nicely. I know we made the right, hard decision for her.  It's been about a month since the first diagnosis of "maybe cancer". If not for this website, we may not have made the right decision and we'd probably be very close to losing her. So, again, we're very thankful for the folks who obviously believed in this and help so many others.

What a super update - I am so glad for Maggie and for you.  It seems like 3 weeks is going to be a definite milestone for her!  So happy she is pain free and now can get around easier.

Tell me more about the "grippers"?  Did you find out about them here?

Not here, but I didn't really look. (I did buy a harness that I found here, though). Found some booties on Amazon and didn't really care for them. One of the reviews for another type, I think, pointed me to these "Grippers". They're from "Dog Quality Enterprises" in Canada. I think they were like $22 with shipping. Their website says 8 days shipping and that was pretty close. These things go on like socks and have "grippy" material completely around the bottom, so if they do twist on the paw, like the first ones did, they'll still have the good stuff to walk on. They also come with velcro ties that can be used to further secure them but I haven't found them necessary. Not sure how they'd hold up if wet, but we're not in for rain any time soon. Our mail comes really late (like 6:30) so didn't get to see Maggie walk much last night, but they stayed on all night, and she's able to get up off the wood and tile floors. Big help.

Super, thanks, Magsdad!  Seems like a good thing to have on hand even if not needed all the time!

So Maggie's just about back to normal. The last hurdle was her favorite...the sofa. She tried to get up a couple days ago but fell. I was there to help her up and she was able to get down on her own. The next couple of days she kept looking at the sofa and I knew she wanted to try again but was afraid. This morning, my wife woke up and found Maggie very proud of herself on her sofa! Yesterday was 3 weeks since surgery. For everyone who said that's the magic point, you were right. She walked with me over to our neighbor's the other day (they're next door, but it's a couple hundred feet) but obviously isn't ready for our regular walk. Still waiting for her first happy howl, but I could not be prouder of her.

The sofa is a major milestone for so many dogs!  Otis was also back up in week 3, and was so happy to be there.  Nothing like a partially shaved, upside down Tripawd on the sofa.   You have really done a great job with Maggie's recovery!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

So we made it through the Fourth of July which seems to have become a week of fireworks capped off by a Disneyland-quality display a  neighbor puts on (grrr). Both dogs absolutely hate them but are getting back to normal. Maggie, however, is not progressing like I'd hoped. I don't think she's in pain, which is terrific, but she's having a really hard time getting around. The one rear leg is acting like it wants to collapse pretty much all the time. I have to encourage her to go out for potty and it's a struggle, but she manages. Yesterday, we bought her one of those heavy-duty yard carts. It was a struggle to get her to get in and lie down, and she just barely fits, but once in, we took her around the neighborhood and she loved it. She can't walk much further than next door before she's exhausted, so she seemed to enjoy getting out a bit. She loves to sit out front and we do that every afternoon for a couple hours. I drove her a few blocks away where we used to walk everyday and we saw some friends she hadn't seen since all this started. That was cool.  Activity level is very low but we're keeping her happy. We haven't found her on her sofa again and I think she's given up on that. She still manages to lie down wherever my wife or I happen to be and seems content to just be with her people.
