YAAAAAAAAAY FOR COMING HOME!!! Isn't that the best feeling?

Take it very, very easy Storm. Rest a d potty breaks and then lots more rest! He's still pretty high on hospital meds, so don't be surprised if he has some "down" time show up in tne next day or so.

Oh, and let us know when he has his first poop. We celebrate anything around here!

Hugs to all!

Just catching up on this thread.  Welcome and glad to hear everything went well with the surgery.  Please don't let him over do as he will be getting used to muscles that haven't been used before & still doped up on surgery meds.  Tripawds are awesome dogs.

Everyone has given great advice and Storm will show that he isn't missing a leg.  Eventually you won't even notice it when he goes to play.

 Go Storm.

Hugs

Hi All,

Well Storm is proving to be a troublesome patient because he refuses to be one!! Spend all of my time trying to slow him down and take a rest, it is really tiring.

Good news is that all of his bodily functions are working, his appetite is good and he is very mobile and agile. He is only on Tramadol and antibiotics as he cannot take NSAIDs but his pain levels seem to be under control but he has got a bit of fluid build up despite the drain and I think that this could be because he doesn't want to settle and when he does he will only lay on a hard tiled floor without any bedding at all. I can't put him in a crate as he tries to claw his way out, not good really. He has many issues due to being a cruelty adoption and one of then is being confined. He also paces non-stop if anyone takes the other dogs out so we are having to put him in the car with them and then someone sits in the car with him while the other dogs go for a walk, he seems to be okay with this at least. I guess it's difficult for him going from walking over 5k a day to inactivity and he is struggling to switch off.

I'm not really sure what to do with him but he is back at the vets in the morning to have the drain removed so I will ask their advice then. They like to worry us don't they!!

The "itching to go" sounds like a good problem to have! I wonder if he's also feeling better w/o that bum leg and he sees no reason not to go out w/ the other dogs. He's going to discover muscles he didn't know he had though so slow and steady wins this race. One thing I regret not starting sooner w/ Ellie is rehab exercises. They're really important (I think) and they'll get him ready to rejoin the pack.

Denise, Bill and Angel Ellie.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Hi Annapyr,

Yes, I guess I should be greatful that he is recovering so well. Trouble is he appears to have fluid build-up, probably because he is moving around so much! Spoke to the vet today and he said to use an ice pack to help try and relieve it and he will be there for a visit in less than 10 hours so we will see what they say.

I think that 'slow' and 'steady' are not in his vocabulary at the moment although he has now been asleep for nearly 2 hours only lifting his head to check that he's not missing out on anything and then going back to sleep. Maybe I'll get some sleep tonight too.

STORM!!! STOOOOOORMMMM! You slow that little frisw butt of yours down Mister!!! Clearly you are causing quite a STORM over at your house by trying to get back to your 5K!!!

As .Michelle and Denise have noted...slow and easy! Don't wanna see you pop up with any strained muscles or sore joints, okay? I fht efluid is a seroma , too.mich activity "can"cause that...sometimes they just happen though. Si ce he already has a drain, perhaps there's a little "clog". Anyway, the vet will check things out... no worries.

It REALLU, REALLY is great that he is doing soooooo well!! This dog is ready to get on liviing life to the fullest!!! Can't wait to see pictures a d videos!

I @pve your devotion...so.someone sitting in the car with hi while the others go for a walk...sweet!!! You'll be going with them vry soon Storm!
You are a very loved bo2!! So glad you have the perfect humans for your forever home!

Lots of love!

Storm is back from his vet visit and all seems to be going well. His drain has been removed and I have instructions to apply warm compresses and massages to help with the fluid and swelling.

The results of his pathology should be back soon so the vet will then discuss his onward treatment.

One question, the nurse mentioned him having an MRI before he starts the chemotherapy. His x-ray of his lungs was clear, this was a deciding factor in deciding on surgery and chemo or we would have let him go, so although the MRI will show his lungs in more detail and whether there are any mets, is it worth doing? His treatment will continue without one I assume. If I knew that this was the preferred method I would have had one done before the surgery, I'm just a little bit confused by it all now.

Hmm. Oftentimes a CT scan is recommended before surgery, just because it will show if the cancer has spread. See this discussion for details.

I would want to know how the results would or would not change the course of treatment before proceeding. If it won't change anything, then I'm not sure why it would be done but it would be good to hear directly from the onco vet.

First of all... LOVE, LOVE, LOVE his picture!!! SOOOOOOO HANDSOME! Smoochable mug and a very happy one at that!!

Okay, I'm usually much more "diplomatic" and, at the very least, try to refrain from expressing my own personal opinion...but I'm breaking mynown rule right now...SKIP THE MRI!! Almost all of js here just had xrays and that what good enough for us and our vets. Of course, if there is some bizarre underlying reason your vet wants you to, then your have ro discuss further with him. They are very expensive too!

And yes, there is a possibility that something more microscopic may show up that doesn't show up in xrays, but that's a possibility all along. For .most of us, if the xrays are clear, that's good news and all we need to know!! And for whatever it's worth, even IF something showed up in the XRAYS, most vets believe continuing with the amputation is the route to take for continuing pain free quality.

I'm not vet, but in my "opinion", that's one less test and expense you can kick to the curb!

Now go give that frisky pup of your a big smooch for us...and a treat!

Hugs to all!
