Hi All! On May 31st, my husband took our two dogs on a long walk. When he got home he snapped a picture of Moby on his dog bed looking very happy. A short time later, I noticed what looked like a large swelling on his hind left leg. It didn't feel like swelling, or like any of his fatty tumors. I was worried.

I took him to the vet the next day. They did xrays, and asprirated it. From what they could tell it was a fatty tumor, but the vet said the way it wrapped around his whole leg, she was uncomfortable removing it. She referred us to surgeon specialist. Three days later we met with the surgeon. She did a thorough check up, and also found a small tumor in his mouth. While she was doing the physical exam, every time she paused, my husband would say, that's a fatty tumor, that's a skin tab, and so on. After she finished she said she thought it was an infiltrative lipoma and wanted to run more test and get the oncologist on site involved. She told us she thought amputation at the hip was the best option.

We were shocked. I don't know why we never thought of amputation in all scenarios we had run through. So they did blood work, an ultrasound of his abdomen, and a radiograph with three views, did apirations in numerous spots.  She returned to tell us it was not cancer, but they were very sure it was infiltrative an again recommended amputation at the hip. She said that they could debulk it, but it would come back, and it could come back quickly. She was kind, informative, and very straight forward.

I was ready to agree to amputation right then, but my poor husband took it very hard. Moby is his first dog, his baby. We rode home in stunned silence. Neither one of us liked the thought of amputation, but both agreed it is our best option. I know it will be more traumatic for us than for Moby.

I called back the next day and left a message that we agreed to a ct scan immediately before surgery, removal of the tumor in the mouth and biopsy, and amputation at the hip. We are hoping that it hasn't inflitrated into the pelvis, but won't know for sure until the ct scan. Monday the surgeon called me back and we schedule the surgery for the following Monday (june 15).

Moby showed no sign of trouble before this. Since Monday we believe the tumor has grown. His leg seems to occasional give out. He stumbled getting in his sandbox and coming up the steps because he did not lift his leg high enough to clear them. Last night we could tell the leg was moving much more stiffly.

The surgery can't come soon enough for me, I am very worried. I am sure now we are making the right decision. I am so thankful for this site. It has given me hope and information. thank you all! Moby loves to swim, the vet said he would be fine to on our vacation in August. I am already looking to purchase the k-9 float smiley Keep us in your thoughts as we go through this. It's wonderful to know we have support! oh, lol, can't figure out how to edit the topic typo, sorry.

Hello and welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join! Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

I'm sorry to hear about Moby but wow what great care he is getting! If you want to give the clinic a shout-out in our "Veterinary Specialists Referalls" forum, feel free, that kind of thing is so helpful. It's hard to believe a lipoma can be so nasty, but yeah, it does happen and we've had a few other  members through the years join us for the same reason. All you can do is be glad it's not a nasty ol' cancer diagnosis.

Most of us also hesitated when forced to make that amputation decision, it's not easy. But as you've seen here, most dogs do great and Moby sure sounds like he's a real spunky dog with a lot of spirit that will help him recover quickly. And yes, Tripawds DO swim! Imagine what your summer will be like once he's healed. Keep that vision in your head and heart and it will help you if recovery has a few ups and downs. And we'll also be here for you so don't be shy.

Stay tuned for more input from the community, this is a great place to be during a tough time like this!

You will be so surprised at what he can do o ce he is healed. Their core gets really strong. My Tripawd, Daryl just sort of springs up from the floor. And jump, I should have renamed him Tigger. He is one of the happiest dogs ever. After awhile, you will actually not even notice the missing leg. He will do just fine. Do some reading and know what to expect during recovery. After the first 2 weeks, their old spunk starts to come back. We adopted Daryl 3 months after his amp. And he was running around like a mad man. You have found a terrific place for support. Keep in touch. Lori, Ty & the gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Can't wait to see pictures of Moby!

I'm so proud of the fact you've made your decision and have stuck to it. Most people would say that was one of the most difficult decisions we've made regarding our fur-babies. And here you are ready to get-r-done!

He's going to do wonderfully and that's because he has you!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Thank you all again!

Now I just very anxious to get this done. The tumor has grown larger in the past week, and it starting to effect Moby's mobility more.

I had hoped to be able to cut down my work hours within two years, and thought that then I would like to adopt a senior, or a tripawd dog. A dog that is harder to adopt out. Never thought my boy would be one.

I am taking the week after his surgery off, I am sure I will have many questions for you all.

I will try to post some pictures soon.

That avatar picture! I'm in love with Moby!!

And good for you for adopting Seniors! I do that also. To be able to ensure that they kmow what love and security feel like as their earthly journey comes to a close is so rewarding...for everybody!

Just remember, Moby isn't worrying about "next week" or the surgery, he's just living in tne moment, blissfully unaware!! Jist take Moby's lead, stay in the present with Moby and know that all is well!

thank you Sally and gang! Moby is our gentle giant. I big dog who doesn't know he is big. He's timid about a lot of things. We take my niece and her two girls camping with us, and Moby is very patient with them. Even when they decide he needs sunglasses way-cool

Can't offer much more but to say "hang in there"! Moby will do great. Ada is one month post amputation and she is doing fantastic! She is just as active and silly as she was before her surgery. Our son stopped over today and he was absolutely amazed at how well she is doing. He said "she doesn't care if she only has 3 legs!" and she doesn't. He saw her about a week a go and he said the improvement in the last week was astounding! Ada also had chemo so Moby will likely recup faster.

I won't lie, the first two weeks had many ups and downs. Everyone here taught me to be patient and they were right! Keep checking in here and you and Moby will get through it.

Sending healing thoughts to all

Deb, Ada, her big brother Bailey and Angel Morgan
