Does anyone here have experience with cancer metastasis in the brain?  If so, what was the end like?  Did things progress quickly, did it seem painful, did you use medication?  I am awaiting a call back from the vet, but I would love to hear from people who went through this and have seen first hand what happens.

I am thinking this might be the situation with our girl who is now 1 yr and 3 months post surgery due to osteosarcoma.  I posted in a different thread, but what we thought was an eye infection seems to be something more serious and now our girl is clumsy and seems to be having trouble moving her hind legs.  That combined with her loss of spirit and lack of appetite has us worried that the cancer is starting to take over.

Thanks for your feedback!

Welcome, your future forum posts will not require moderation.

You may find topics discussing metastasis to the brain by searching these forums, but be sure to check out Lincoln's blog. While the cancer that took his leg did not metastasize in his brain, many of his earlier posts discuss his prior battle with brain cancer.

I don't know if it is at all the same thing, but Levi had some similar issues.  Spirit Levi's mom posts as 94vettgirl and you could send her a Private Message if she doesn't respond here. Sadly Levi passed in June.

Levi was having seizures and had a chronic sinius infection I think.  Here are the Posts Levi's mom started- you could see if anything sounds familar with your situation.

I'm sorry Kash is having problems.  I hope the vet can give you some answers.  Even if it isn't news you want to hear you will know what you are up against, knowledge is power.

Hi, I've been keeping an eye on your "eye discharge" post.  I didn't want to say anything (unneccisarily scare you) until you went to your vet but it sure sounds like what happened with my Levi sad. Levi had Lung mets in January but they weren't bothering him.  Then in April-ish he had a runny nose.  I was sure this was the end so I called my vet hysterical and she said it might just be a sinus infection. So we tried antibiotics and they cleared it up while he was on them but it would come right back. Long story short we spent six weeks or so trying different antibiotics. During this time he had a couple seizures.  The first one he had was incredibly scary because I had no idea anything about seizures so i rushed him to the vet because I thought he was dying. Anyway, We couldn't figure outi f the antibiotics were causing the seizures or something else...So we stopped all antibiotics (they were making him not eat anyway). Then, he became uncoordinated like you are talking about.  It was subtle at first but then got worse. It was very sad.  I brought him to the chiropractor thinking that might be the problem but it wasn't...He also just seemed "off". Like he had a differnent personality.  Sometimes you would call him and he would just stare at us...Nothing dramatic but when you know your dog-you know when they are "off". We never tried to get all of this diagnosed because there was nothing we could do anyway.  Levi did have a large hard bump on his back. When the vet saw him when we brought him in to put him to sleep she said it was definitely cancer spread.  He must have had a tumor in his nose too.  That's why his runny nose wouldn't clear up and he had eye discharge too. even with all of these problems I still really struggled with "picking the day." He didn't seem to be in any pain so I didn't get "the look". But he wasn't eating so he was very thin...we spent about two weeks terrified he would have another seizure so my husband and I took turns staying home with him.  These two weeks were unbelieveably difficult and stressful.  Levi did have another seizure while not on any meds so at that point we knew it must be cancer...The morning we brought him to be put to sleep he was perky and ate beef jerky in the back seat with me.  Again, it wasn't an obvious "its time to put him to sleep" for us. But when you're dealing with the brain there are a lot of unknowns that could happen and we couldn't keep staying home with him. We didn't want something terrible to happen to him (continuous seizures or personality change, etc) and then we would have to remember that...We could have bought a few more weeks with some prednisone but we chose not to do that. I think the only way to know for sure if it's in the brain is to do an MRI.  They are pretty expensive and Levi's cancer was already in his lungs too.  The thing that really threw me off is that I thought in the end he would be in pain and it would be obvious when it was time to go.  But I feel like with brain cancer it wasn't super obvious because we kept wondering if it was something else causing all the symptoms...very stressful.  Please let me know if you have any other questions...

Levi was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-7-11
Ampuversary 10-14-11
Lung Mets Discovered 1-4-12. Chemo seemed to not be working so we switched to Artemisinin and other supplements. In May, Levi developed a sinus infection and started having seizures. The cancer had moved to his brain. We let him go 6-26-12.

Thank you for sharing this information about Levi's illness. I know that it's awfully hard to share such difficult experiences, but by doing so you are helping others. Hopefully this isn't the case with Kash, but at least now Kash's Mom can bring this up with her vet. Thank you so much.

Hope you're feeling better Kash.

Yes, I hope this isn't the case for you! You aren't dealing with lung mets and seizures like we were so this definitely could be something else!

94vettegirl: Thanks for sharing your experience.

After watching Kash over the last couple weeks, I don't think it's in the brain as I thought previously, but it is likely that maybe she has a tumor in her nose or near her eyes since the drops haven't really worked.  But our main concern has been her almost overnight weakness. There was about a week or so that she was looking pretty good - she was eating and her strength was better.  So we thought "she's done it again...she's a miracle dog".  But then this past weekend, she took a turn for the worse, and I am now recognizing all the signs we saw the first time around when the cancer was in her front leg.  So eye issue aside, I am now convinced that the bone cancer has spread to her back right leg.  It's gotten so bad that she can hardly put pressure on it (we have to lift her up - all 80 lbs of her - to take her potty) and she is vocalizing periodically.  We have her on pain meds, but we will likely need to say goodbye within the next couple days. I don't think there is any need to X-ray her...it is what it is. This disease is just so awful!

As fortunate as we feel to have had her so long after amputation, it doesn't make this next stage any easier.  It's always hard, no matter what.

Thanks again for those that have shown support and shared their stories.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this. It's never easy to get to this stage of life, it just hurts like hell when there's nothing else to be done. As you walk this part of the journey, keep the good times that you shared close to your heart, and try to remember that the pain of saying goodbye is the price for the kind of unconditional love that Kash shared so freely with you. It's tough to remember this when you're in the middle of it, for sure.

We have a lot of grief resources available throughout this community so do some browsing in our blogs and here in the forums for some more support. And of course if we can do anything to help, let us know OK?

Many hugs coming your way, we are very sorry.

Oh, I'm so sorry to read this you. You are right - this stage is so hard. We are thinking of you and sending pawsitive thougths.

Hang in there,
Jackie, angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. I am so so sorry to hear about Kash.  We also saw the cancer spread to Magnum's back leg. Nothing prepares you for this stage of the journey. It is the price of loving so deeply. Sending you lots of healing hugs.

Karen and Spirit Magnum

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. I'm so sorry to hear about Kash - it really is so difficult at this stage - we cherish every day we have but also know it brings us one day closer to saying goodbye. Lots of hugs and strength. XoSue
