Hello all,

First I would like to thank everyone here for sharing their stories. You all have given me so much hope.

My boy Tank was diagnosed through an X-ray on Feb 21. Tomorrow we go for a full body scan and take it from there.

Tank is a 10 year Rottie, roughly 120lbs. He’s been really down lately and I’m wondering how long does it take from diagnosis time to the day he gets his front right leg amputated. I would like this done immediately so he doesn’t become sicker. Is there or should there be a time frame?

Sorry but I’m only starting with all the questions.

Thank you all so much. <3

Ask anything and everything you can think of anytime, okay?   That6 why we're  here.  That's  what we all have done.  That's  why Founder Jerry had his hoomans start this site❤

Many of us here started with treating our dog's limp with Rimadyl and rest, thinking it was a sprain, or arthritis,  etc. In my Happy Hannah's  case, the limp would get better, and then not, repeat the meds, rest, get better, etc.    She "seemed" perfectly  fine and happy otherwise, so I had no reason to be alarmed....based on the knowledge  I had back then.  This, it was a couple of months  before the Vet finally  had xrays  done and osteo confirmed.

Then it was a couple  of weeks getting  her scheduled with Orthopedic  Specialist Surgeon, figuring  out funds, etc.

So sometimes  proper  diagnosis can take awhile.   Sometimes  people go get xrays straight away (which I would probably  do now that I have more knowledge  of this crap disease) and then go to surgery fair,y quickly as soon as it can be scheduled.

Sooooo, bottom line, it varies!  Obviously  the sooner the better as soon as it is confirmed.  Fracture is always a possible risk with delay.

You have the confirmation,  your almost done with diagnostics, Tank is maybe showing  signs of that bum leg hurting, so get it done as soon as you can is my 2 cents worth.

Update when you can...and ask any questions  anyt6!

Hugs

Ask away! Ask any questions you'd like, that's why we are here.

Each situation is a bit different. Some vets will diagnose and amputate within a week, some within a couple or maybe longer depending on how the diagnostics come out. In most cases it's a straightaway trip to amputation within a few days as long as no other potential complications have made themselves obvious. And it also depends on the clinic's schedule of course. Make it clear that you want to move quickly and I'm sure yours will do their best to accommodate you.

In the meantime don't forget to check out our e-books, Three Legs and a Spare and Loving Life On Three Legs if you haven't already, as well as Jerry's Required Reading List , to help calm your worries. And ask any questions that pop into your mind, we are here for you and Tank.

Hope this helps.

My Tank does have a fracture in his shoulder now. I assume it was caused by the cancer. I’m trying to learn as much as I can so I can do what is right for my boy.

I’m trying to figure out how to post a pic of his xrays. I’ll post them when I can figure it all out.

Wish us luck tomorrow as he’s going on for a full body scan and an ultrasound.

XO

Sending  all sorts of pawsitive  energy to tough guy Tank!

Yeah, the fracture  I'd most likely a result of osteo.  It happens.  I can't remember,  is Tank already  on some pain meds?  Your Vet can give you some tomorrow if not.

Try this link adding images .  We would love to see pics of your handsome boy!!

Tank is on Tramadol and Rheumocam. We also give him CBD oil daily. It seems to help but I can see he’s in pain. He such a good boy though. The vet can poke and prod at him and he just looks at her all calm. They laid him on the X-ray table when checking his leg and he fell asleep. Lol. This was done even before we were giving him pain meds. Just a gentle natured dog.

His appetite is not that great right now so we get him to eat by putting broccoli (which he loves) in his food. Today I mixed in a boiled egg and he liked that. I guess we wouldn’t want to eat either if we were in that much pain.

One day at a time.

I’m going to try and post pictures so bare with me.
