Welcome!

Dolly Momma's story is amazing. She is proof of the amazing spirit and courage that dogs show every day And I'm sure she will come thru the amputation with flying colors. What wonderful people you are to help these fur babies find better lives with people that love them.

We'll be watching for updates.

Luanne and Spirit Shooter

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Oh - you all are so sweet - it confirms what I've already known from my experience with fostering...Dog "people" are the best and people who go above and beyond - rescue, caring for Tripawds, etc. are the cream of the crop!!

So since she already navigates my wood floor well and usually holds up her short leg - do you think she will need traction mats everywhere?  I was thinking in front of her crate, the bed in the den, and her food/water bowl.  Those mats are kind of expensive.  Maybe I can find some cheaper bath mats with rubber underneath that would work. Anyone have any other suggestions?   I find that small throw rugs tend to slip around on my floors and could make things worse?

You know here better than anyone else. If you see her struggling or looking unsure of herself, it's probably the floors. At the very least traction in strategic areas is very helpful.

Costco has some really nice looking carpet runners for about $10 if you're a member, that's where we get ours, they're about 30" x 72" or around there.

She's been having a nice weekend.  We've had beautiful weather here in Ga.  I took her out to a local festival on Sat. where she got lots of petting and attention, some healthy, homemade dog treats, and even met some other nice dogs.  Today she is relaxing in the sunshine and watching me putter in the garden.

I just realized when I was looking for my thread that I posted in the cancer section.  I am so sorry - obviously a newbie! Only 2 more "normal" days until surgery - no food after 8 pm on Tues. night and no water after midnight.

I'll keep you posted on how she's doing.... thanks for "holding my hand" through this!

Yay for great weekends! Tripawds are rock stars wherever they go, she will love the attention!

Please don't feel bad about posting elsewhere, I'm just a neatnick about keeping posts in certain forums, it's me who should apologize, I should have told you I moved it.

We're just glad things are good. Yipeee!

I thought of another question.  Will she be able to sit after the amputation?  Currently, because of the angle of her leg, she can only stand and lie down.  I even wonder if she will remember how to sit?

Thanks!

One more "normal" day.....

She will be able to sit! :-) I wondered the same about Shelby (also a rear amp) but Shelby can sit like a princess. She prefers to lay down but she will sit if I ask her to. The thing I have noticed about Shelby is that she tends to land 'harder' now when she sits... she's only 23# but I definitely hear her when she goes down. Shelby can even still shake (that was huge for us since I wasn't sure how she could balance w/out her hind leg) ...

They are truly amazing!!! Best of luck to you~! Keep us posted....

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

That is good news Alison, thanks!  I feel like she is so limited - it's not that easy for her lie down - so she stands a lot.  She also has a strange stance when she tries to urinate - I cannot picture exactly how it will be after amputation - but trust she will figure it all out.

I called the vet's office today to check on her current medication - whether to dose her that morning or not... my sweet vet got on the phone and talked to me for almost 5 minutes. She was very reassuring and told me she would make sure she isn't in pain and that she will quickly heal and feel relief as the leg now is more of hindrance than a help.  She reminded me of how much easier it would be than a dog who is suddenly hit by a car and loses a leg that she has been using normally.  She also said she would leave a little bit of the bone so that she would have a more normal look to her hindquarters.

So grateful to have a vet who is willing to talk and takes time with her patients!!!

Murphy's vet also left a little bit of bone at the top of the femur. He sits pretty much normally and can even shake hands with both sides....something he learned to do after the amp. The "high five" is one of the exercises he was given to help with core muscle strength.

You will be amazed at how well she will do.

Kathi and Murphy

PS. LOVE the name!

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

UPDATE:   She made it through surgery just fine yesterday!  So far she still has not eaten or tried to stand.  So they are keeping her one more day/night and I will pick her up tomorrow.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers...SO glad to have that part behind us....onward and upward!!!

Glad to hear surgery went well for Dolly. It's a relief to have that behind you and her for sure. It's also great they are keeping her for another nite to monitor her and help her along. I'm sure your anxious to get her home.

Good thoughts

She's home!  None of my fears came to pass...she jumped *JUMPED* into my back seat.  (I was imagining struggling to load her in and out of the car).   She has a little bit of edema - she's on 2 pain meds and antibiotics - but she actually walked right in the kitchen and seemed hungry - so I fixed her dinner and she ate almost all of it!   She went out to go potty -

I bought this $60 orthopedic pad for her crate - I took the old comforter out and tossed it in the corner - guess where she is sleeping?  Right - on the old comforter.  I guess it smells familiar.

I think she is doing so well because the leg was actually more of a pain than a help.  They are talking about her being off all pain meds in about a week - she's been on Metacam and Tramadol since I've had her - (Jan.) - so that will be amazing!!

The incision and stitches don't look bad - it's a bit red now and swollen.  I'm supposed to keep an eye on the swelling over the weekend. I tried to get all of my errands done so I can stay in with her for the next few days.
