DunaImage Enlarger
Hi al from Madrid (Spain),

Our loved sweet dog Duna has been diagnosticated of osteosarcoma in one of her front llegs. My husband and me are very sad because Duna is very important for us.

We found her in the street, when she was only 2 months old, injured, with one of rear legs amputated. She is 11 years old now, but she is a very energy dog, plain of life. She doesn´t seems to be more than 7 or 8 years old. She is a very very very special dog and she´s the light of our lives.

Three weeks ago, she began to walk slower, and we noticed that she didn´t want to rest on this left front leg. We went with her to the veterinary clinic and they took a X-ray. It apeared a zone in which the bone was damaged at the the top humerus.

Then, the veterinaries did a PET scan and they took to a citology of cells to find out with security which kind of cells they are, though they presume that it was an osteosarcoma. It seemed to affect to the bone and to the soft tissue too.

Until now, she was happy running and playing with my her three legs and she´s never felt sad or insecure.

After much thought, we decided, as it hurts her so much, to ask the vet to amputate her affected leg, and we proposed that although she is going to be a very very special dog, with only two legs, her life would be happy everything it lasted.
Now, she´s recovering from the operation and she has also begun receiving chemotherapy to try that cancer does not return.
We´re bought for her a very cool harness, which is about to reach by post and a very good friend of us is going to lend her a wheelchair so she can run all she want.
We want her to go to swimm at a very cool place, two or three times a week. It's called NARUB and is a warm water pool for dogs with problems like Duna, where she could enjoy and exercise and so then she can move easier and to get stronger to use the wheelchair
Now, Duna, is a bipod dog. She´s recovering of the surgery but we have the intention of give her a good life. The pain in her bone wasn´t controllable. Now, we´ll go on with chemotherapy and supplements, and a good diet too.

We´d like to receive advices and your experiences if you know about bipods dogs.

We have known about Artemisinin and Zeolite as efficient supplements against cancer. Any information will be welcome.

Thank you so much.

Duna and family.

Duna and family, welcome to the community nobody wants to join. Thanks for registering as a member, now your posts won't require approval and appear automatically.

Wow I had no idea that she already had the amputation when I was chatting with you yesterday. Is she getting around OK? What's her mobility like? I hope she's feeling better and on the road to recovery.

See the links in your post? Those links will take you to the information we like to share about your areas of interest, like Artemisinin and wheelchairs. One thing to keep in mind that when it comes to wheelchairs they must have a good fit for the dog using it, or you could end up with more injuries. Be sure to have a doggie physical therapist who understands fitting techniques take a look at Duna when she's in the chair to make sure it fits correctly.

She is a very lucky girl to have you for pawrents. It's clear how much you love her and will give her a great life. Please keep us posted and share more photos of your very special pup. Thanks again for joining us.

It’s very clear from your post how much you guys love Duna. I’m sorry to hear of the challenges she’s facing now being a very special Bi-Pawd. But it sounds like you have a plan to go forward, and I don’t think Duna could be in any better hands than yours.

Like Jerry said, I would check with your doctor to see if they know of a doggie physical therapist in your area who could properly fit Duna for a wheelchair .

And I know these are very stressful days, for both you and Duna. All of us here have gone through amputation, but not TWO amputations! I can only imagine how anxious you feel. Take things slowly, and talk to your doctors.

Duna is very lucky to have you as her guardians. And you are lucky to have someone as special as Duna. We’ll all be thinking about Duna and wishing her the best recovery, and sending positive thoughts her way.

Oh my goodness! Are Duna's missing legs on the same side or opposite sides? I have seen videos of both, plus dogs that are missing both front legs or both back ones. So, she (and you) can definitely do this but it is going to be a steep learning curve. It sounds like you have done alot of research already and are in the process of acquiring everything you need to help Duna adjust to and eventually thrive on two legs. Does the place where you will take her swimming have rehabilitation therapists? Perhaps they can help you in these early days.

I can't think of any two-legged animals in the Tripawds community but if you google two legged dogs (as I am sure you have) quite a few come up. Perhaps you could contact someone who has been through this directly? Are you on Facebook? I follow a two-legged pitbull there. Maybe you could post on his page asking for their experience and tips?

I know it must be really hard right now but Duna is obviously a survivor and fighter. She was strong and fit going into this and she is young enough that she should be able to recover and live a great life on two legs, especially with you by her side. Try not to worry and take it one day and one step at time. With your love for her and hers for you, you WILL get through this!

I wish I could be of more help but don't hesitate to post here asking for specific help. I am sure that many of our tripawd tips will be adaptable to a bipod!

Sending you and Duna all our tripawd strength for her recovery,

xoxo,

I know it is hard to keep reading so much English, but the rescue where I got Daryl has quite a few pups on wheels. Most are paralyzed, but still only using 2 legs. It is called Pets with Disabilities. There are a lot of pictures and I think some videos on there. I'll just help you see that it CAN be done. Hugs, Lori, Angel TY and the canine 3

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Welcome,
Wow, it is very clear how much Duna means to you and your husband.....what a wonderful life and care you have given to her. I really don't have much advice to give, everyone here has already given excellent advice, but I also believe there have been many success stories out there with 2-legged pups. Like Codie Rae said, you are obviously well prepared, and fully learning how to deal with Duna on 2 legs.

Please keep us all updated on her progress, and this is surely the best place to be to support you, your husband, and Duna, as you learn each day together, your new way of life.
Best wishes for all of you,
Bonnie & Angel Polly

Hi Duna,

I'm a cat mom and osteosarcoma isn't the type I'm dealing with so I have no words of wisdom, but I just wanted to let you know you have another person in your corner.  Please feel better soon, sweet girl.
