On October 15, I took my almost 8 year old American Bulldog into the vet thinking she had sprained her hind left leg.  The vet took an x-ray and came back to me with devastating news.  My baby girl had bone cancer.  Not  the news I was at all expecting.  Everything happened so fast after that. I immediately got on the computer when I got home and read everything I could find on this website.  I was so happy I found the site.  I also downloaded three legs and a spare which helped me immensely.  I read it from the first page to the last.

We went to an oncologist on October 22 and Cadence was scheduled for surgery on October 26.  Cadence was a good candidate for amputation.  It broke my heart thinking about amputation, but it hurt me even more knowing that she would be in such a tremendous amount of pain if we did not have the surgery.  Reading other peoples stories helped me in dealing with what was ahead and what to expect after surgery.

When we met with the oncologist I made sure that all my questions were answered.  I printed out the list of questions from the book and brought it with me.  When you are going though this type of stress, it is very helpful to have questions written down. The vet we met with was very helpful and took the time to answer the questions I had.  He even answered the questions I had regarding a holistic approach.  I know that some doctors may not have an open mind to that approach but I wanted to know all the options.

Cadence stayed in the hospital over night.  The vet called several times to update us and I was also able to call whenever I wanted to.  They never dismissed me and always were very helpful.

My boyfriend and I were so nervous picking her up.  I know that every dog is different so we did not know what to expect.  Miss Cadence RAN to us.  My boyfriend and I looked at each other and almost cried.  We were so happy that she was happy.  She couldn't wait to get home so we could be a happy family once again.

Cadence has amazed me everyday since we have gotten her home.  She is slowly getting stronger on her feet but at times is a little wobbly, which is to be expected.  My only problem is trying to get her to relax.  She wants to go..go..go.  I don't want her doing to much because I feel she slowly needs to build up her strength.  The only time she will slow down is when I give her the painkillers.  About 1/2 hour afterwards she finally gets into bed.  So far so good.  It makes me happy knowing that we made the right decision with the amputation.  I know there may be rough days ahead but for right now we are taking it one day at a time.

We are now 8 days post amputation & doing great! Good luck to you...it seems to get easier as time passes.  We are following Dr. Dressler's cancer diet, opted out of chemo for now.  I completely understand everything you are going through, its tough news to hear.

What a fantastic update! Thank you for sharing this terrific news with us.

I think your instincts are right; it's hard not to let her go all out but it's best to take things slowly. Too much activity too soon can result in a seroma (fluid leakage), which isn't a big deal but what is a bigger deal is, sometimes what happens is the patient will do too much and have a setback when a muscle strain occurs.

One day at a time, little by little, she will get back to the "new normal"!

Thanks for letting us know that our ebook is helpful :)

She sounds like she is doing great, maybe she will be one of the lucky dawgs that sails through recovery!  If not you are prepared.

The back leg wobble was the way I could tell my pug Maggie was truly tired. She was a bit stubborn sometimes and it was hard to tell when she was 4 legged if she was tired or just being lazy.  When that one back leg would wobble, or her butt would sag I knew she was really tired.

Just for reference Mag took about 6 months to work up to walking about half the distance she could before surgery.  You have to account for the 'pugs can be slugs' factor... but she never got farther than that.  I didn't do any formal PT, but we played games and wrestled which I think helped her build strength.

Keep us posted on how Cadence is doing.

That is great to hear that she is doing so well!  I hope she continues to recover like that :-)   Just take it one day at a time.  Every day is a new day, especially during the first 2 weeks.  If you can make it through that, you can make it through anything.  Glad to hear she is doing so well, that's great news!

Hope the recovery is going well! There can be ups and downs. We're here if you have questions!

Hang in there,

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Cadence is doing very well with her recovery.  She had a few bad days because she decided to over do it one day.  I take full blame on that one.  She just wanted to keep going and going, and I let her.  That wont happen again.  For the next two days she was wiped out.  She has since gotten back to her usual goofy self, and is adjusting pretty darn well.  We are taking it one day at a time.  Cadence will be starting her chemo on Nov 7th.  She will be going for 4 sessions.  Its been very helpful to ready other doggies experience with chemo.  I now know what to expect, even though every doggie is different.  I was really nervous about the chemo, but now I feel a bit more relaxed about it.  Our vet is so wonderful about explaining everything to us.   He really cares about Cadence and that makes us feel so much better.  I guess you can say I really trust him, and that is very important to me.  The stitches also come out on Wednesday which Im very excited about.  For the most part she has left them alone, but it will be one less thing I have to worry about.   I will keep everyone updated and when I finally learn to upload the pics, I will post them.  Thanks to everyone for their support.

Hope the chemo went well. After Abby's first treatment, she only wanted very plain food to eat. Tempting her with her faves didn't work. She just wanted some plain pasta. She mostly breezed through her treatment, but know the treatments have a cumulative effect so Cadence might get more tired as the treatments go on.

Cadence had her first round of chemo and for the first couple of days she was fine.  She has a ferocious appetite so thankfully I don't have to worry about her not eating.  I started her on a raw diet and she is loving it so far.  She is not drinking as much water as she used to so tonight I added a bit of Gatorade into the water and she started to drink it.  Hopefully that will do the trick and she will continue to drink.  There has been no throwing up and no diarrhea, so we are all good on that.  The only issue we are having is that she is very lethargic.  She just wants to sleep all day.  The only time she shows any excitement is when we take her out for a walk.  She is so happy to get out of the house and she just keeps wanting to go and go and go.  We are trying not to over due it  as we have noticed her rear leg is being overworked.  She seems to be limping a bit.  Its only been a couple of weeks since the amputation so I'm trying not to expect to much from her.  I am just starting to feel bad because she just doesn't seem like the old Cadence the last few days.  I think I'm at that stage where I'm wondering if we made the right decision.  From reading other peoples experiences I think that is pretty common so I'm trying not to get to wrapped up in the guilt mode.  I know deep down we made the right decision but its hard to see my baby not herself.  I'm hoping with time things will get better and she will give me that big smile like she used to.  I guess I'm just having a bad day.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.  Thanks for listening to me.

Try not to worry, this sounds fairly common. Keep your vet in the loop just to be sure but just wait, she will perk up. She's been through so much, time and rest is what she needs.

Also about the lack of thirst; that's common with dogs on raw food diets. There is more liquid in non processed foods so she won't be as thirsty as she was when eating just dry kibble. But be sure to keep your vet informed about her diet; many vets discourage raw during chemo because resistance is low and she may be at risk of food borne illnesses. Be sure to use extra safe handling procedures at this time.

Hang in there, she will get back to herself soon!

Cadence is slowly showing signs of her old self.  I bought her a new toy that squeaked  and she started playing with it.  The old her would have destroyed the squeaky part of it by now, so thats a sign to me she still has a ways to go.  But it was great seeing her play and smiling.  Today we took her for a walk at one of her favorite places.  It was such a beautiful sunny day and she walked around town smiling ear to ear.  It kind of funny seeing peoples reactions to her when they see she is missing a leg.  All the little kids ask, " Oh what happened to your poor doggie".  Im not sure if kids understand the word cancer so I just tell them she was sick and she had to have her leg removed.

Cadence is still a bit to herself.  Ive read in other people's posts that sometimes happens.  She is usually the type of dog that follows us around the house.  She is staying to herself and we are just learning not to take it personally and to let her do her own thing.  She is a bit hesitant about going in and out of the doggie door.  Sometimes she just sits and stares at it but she eventually makes her way outside.  I have also noticed she does not like going for walks when it is dark outside.  Maybe it just has something to do with her feeling vulnerable when its dark.  It was never a problem before.  I guess with each passing day her confidence will build.

Its been so very helpful reading all the other posts.  If something comes up with Cadence, I quickly go on line and see what other people have been through.  I find that very comforting.

Saturday, Cadence will be going to the vet for her bloodwork.  We will see what her white blood cell count is doing.  On the 29th she goes for her 2nd round of chemo.   Im not sure when they are going to do an xray to see if the cancer is showing up anywhere else.   The vet said its usually done every 3 to 4 months but Im not sure if its done after all rounds of chemo or not.  Im dreading that day but we are learning to take one day at a time.

I'm so glad you're finding other stories to be comforting and helpful, that's what Tripawds is all about. It definitely sounds to me like you're learning as you go, and taking things day by day the way Cadence does.

And you're right; with each new day, she will become more confident, and you will too.

Good luck on Saturday! I hope all systems are go for the next chemo round.
