Started covering up my wooden floors today and she's had her pre-surgery bath so that she smells all nice - anything else anyone can suggest to make the house tripawd friendly?

Block off stairs with bewitch pet gates, create a recovery room, elevated bowls can help too...find many more recovery and cre tips in the Tripawds e-books and bookmark Jerry's Required Reading List for lots of helpful links.

Hi, sorry to hear about Molly; but you've come to the right place for help and guidance! Our Dobe Nitro had his front leg amputated 2 years ago this June and is doing awesome! It can be hard the first couple of weeks, but it does get better.

We got raised bowls for him, and found that a harness is a life saver! We got the Ruff Wear Harness by Webmaster from this site and it was the best thing ever. Some advise waiting till the staples are out, but we put it on immediately when we picked him up at the vet (with a t-shirt under it). We put our futon mattress on the floor - where we spent the first few nights with him - and put our bed on the floor too (where it still is today lol).

Also, when she gets home, make sure you keep a strict schedule with pain meds...I set several alarms on my phone as reminders 24 hours a day.

As for the anxiety you're feeling, I have no tricks to make that go away. I was a wreck! I was scared to see the incision when we picked him up, but I didn't want him feeding off my anxiety, so I put a big smile on my face, and told him how handsome he was.

Good luck, use the tools of the awesome place...live chat is great, and the helpline for when you want to talk to someone who's been where you are. You've got this!

A lot of it seems to be that I keep trying to imagine her with 3 legs and I simply can't!

Hi Kirsty,

My cat Mona had her front leg amputated June 2016 and now I can't imagine her with 4 legs. From this I learned how determined and creative she is. Nothing stops her - she just gets around differently. I love her just as much and I admire her even more.

Practice BEING MORE.DOG! .Be more Molly!..she isn't worried about a.thing. she.not "visualizing" what she will look like on three legs. She's living in the moment,.in the NOW! Molly lives.worry free and just trusts that whatever comes her way she'll handle just fine.Live in the present,.just like Molly. Don't let worrying interfere with your time together with Molly.

Deep breaths....lots.of.CHOCOLATE... e more dog and stay in the present....and stay connected to.us!

Wow Iwas so nervous when Karl had his surgery 2 months ago. I didn't even want to pick him up right away because I was afraid that I didn't know how to help him. But when he came walking into see me 24 hours post amp! It is so awesome, He could go to the bathroom with us near by and rearrange himself so he could get comfortable. I felt fine , he was in the lead and I just needed to follow. I don t have any regrets, karl had his front right leg amputated due to Osteosarcoma and at the same time had a mast cell tumor removed. We had a few issues in the first 3 weeks, but overall he was doing great after that. He does everything he used to do. Goes to the beach, plays fetch and tug, wrestles with other dogs and rolls in yucky stuff every chance he gets. He is currently going in for chemo every 3-4 weeks. Hang in there, you can do , it went Better than I expected!

I took my son with me when I picked Murphy up after surgery because I couldn't imagine how I was going to get him into the car.  I figured that the hospital probably had a cart or something, but I wasn't sure.  Murphy had his front leg removed due to histiocytic sarcoma.  Well, 24 hours after surgery he came hopping out that door, pulling on the leash like, "let's get out of this place!" He even hopped into the car by himself!  We got home, the other dogs sniffed him all over, he went outside and peed for about 5 minutes, then he came in to take a long nap.  They are totally amazing.

Since Molly is getting a rear leg removed, you probably don't need the raised dishes, that mostly helps the front-leg dogs.  Definitely the rugs or something on the floors.  A good harness, like the Ruff Wear - it has a handle on the top to help lift her which is so helpful.  As long as it doesn't hit where her staples are, you can use it right away, otherwise you'll want to wait until she's healed.  We have a ranch-style house, but we have a couple of areas where there is just 1 step, like into the family room or by the front door.  I put a tap light by each of those areas so that at night when we would turn off the lights, I would touch those on & it would light the step.  That way if Murphy walked around in the dark it was just enough light to let him see the depth of the step & act as a reminder for him so he wouldn't stumble.  I just used them until the batteries wore out.

Make sure you keep the medications going around the clock for even coverage.  You can use ice packs to the incision a couple times a day for about 10-20 minutes to help reduce swelling.  And massaging around the area to re-absorb the extra fluids.  Murphy didn't really want to eat, so I cooked some rice & poured chicken broth over it, then added some chunks of chicken to it.

And keep in touch, we'll be here for you.  Odds are that whatever you're going through, someone's been there, done that.

All your advice and stories are helping me so much! Knowing that you all managed to get through it with your furry friends is really positive for me!

Had a couple of negative comments today about how I'm being cruel expecting her to struggle on with 3 legs and wouldn't it be better to just put her to sleep! But I know she will cope as she is a fighter and has me to help her get through!

Already looking forward to getting her back to the comfort of her own home and she hasn't even gone in for the surgery yet!!

I know Thursday is gonna be a tough day but we'll get through it! I've already put rugs down over my laminate floors so she can't slip and I've got a ruffwear harness on order! Does anyone know what kind of bed is best?? She currently has a couple of cushions and a soft dog bed but I wondered whether an orthopaedic memory foam mattress would be better?

I have three of the Big Barker beds for Otis.   Bought the first one three years ago when he was first diagnosed with arthritis - I actually bought the other two because I was getting ready to throw the first one away.   Fortunately, I didn't, because it is still his favorite bed.   During the first few recovery days, he pretty much just moved from bed to bed - one is in the family room, and the other two are in the "living" room, which is where we all sleep now.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Ignore the negative comments, and look at the pictures and videos that people have posted of their tripawds doing what dogs do.  I saw one with a group of dogs and I couldn't even tell which one was the tripawd!   She won't be struggling on three legs (ok, maybe for the 1st ten days while she acclimates), but living life to the fullest!

Its been 4 weeks since I had the front leg amputated from my 12 yr old border collie mix.  She was suffering from osteosarcoma for 3 months and it came to decision time.  Keep her on pain meds til the end or amputate.  My vet looked at her and said "she still has life left in her."  Now, 4 weeks later the old facial expressions, old personality and the old self are back!!  I am not doing chemo so I don't how much longer God will let me enjoy her but it's one joyous day at a time.  So that right there should come against all the negative comments.

I am so glad now that I did this, but the first week I was questioning.  It feels like a long recovery and you must be attentive to her with meds and going outside and "doctored" food since the appetite is missing.  Since we still had snow, so she soon learned to brace herself in the snowbank to pee.  The second week found her hopping after the ball but not returning it.  But by the 3rd week she was running through the woods, hopping over fallen trees and through the brush.  I couldn't keep up with her.  Needless to say, by the 4th week she is fetching the ball repeatedly and continues to enjoy romping through the woods.  Now when she meets me at the door I sometimes forget she comes with 3 legs.

So many great suggestions!! I went to Ross and got about 4 yoga mats, plus rug runners. I also put rug treads on my deck steps. The orthopedic bed was also really important for my Lily. I had a video of Lily running around the yard on 3 legs. I shared it with the vets so they could show it to people who were hesitant about their furbabies losing a leg. Ignore those negative remarks-they haven't seen what tripawds are capable of!!

Joan and her angel, Lily

Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.

Although I'm.sure.some.of."those" comments were well.intended, they serve you no.purpose. You have done your research, they haven't. You have the information, they don't.

Yes, The Big Barker Bed provides the firmness needed so tripawds can get up without slipping or falling. The.support is perfect for cushioning the joints. It is an investment, vut I've spent that many times over or squishy beds that lose shape and clump up. These are designed for bigger dogs. Check them out here by using the Amazon Smiles link.

You are a great advocate for.Molly!

We are.here for you..and with you!

Lots.of.hugs!heart
