Hi everyone! My guy Max (aka boo boo cito) is 10yo rottie golden husky mix. He was dx with osteosarcoma 4d ago and has had generalized anxiety for the last 10mos at night. He exhibits panting/wide eyes/pacing (very similar to thunderstorm fearful behavior), pawing, and what we affectionately call "lifting weights" at night by moving chairs, sliding or knocking over stools, pawing power cords out of the walls, and pulling things off shelves. We've had our routine vet exams, bw (all normal), anti-anxiety and sedating and anti-seizure meds with no luck...plus neurologist referral exam. This behavior has continued at night only,  usu 3-5 nights a week, from 1am-5am ish.

With this new dx of osteosarcoma, Max is a good candidate for amputation, the lesion is relatively small and his bw this week continues to be normal with normal urinalysis and clean chest xray. After all that bg... my question for those of you on the forum is: can dogs with generalized anxiety and pawing behavior cope with forelimb amputation?

We are very concerned that our guy will struggle and not manage well on the post-op meds. He was on 1.5mg alprazolam 2x daily, 350mg trazodone at night, and 300mg gabapentin at night, plus a test few weeks on keppra, none of which alleviated his nighttime anxiety. Our vet does not feel it's likely that the pain of his osteosarcoma tumor would have been causing this odd behavior for 10mos. Many thanks for sharing any other anxiety prone pets experience with amputation.

Hi Max and family, welcome. Your future posts won’t need approval so post away.

I’m sorry to hear of the diagnosis, sounds like he has everything on his side overall to do really well. The anxiety part is unusual for a dog his age. Did you guys see a board certified behaviorist to dig into the possible causes? My first thought was also  that the pain from the osteosarcoma could be causing or exacerbating it. So if that wasn’t it, then what might have triggered it?

Many dogs here have anxiety issues and they still do well. Our attitude has a lot to do with how well recovery goes so it’s up to us to set a good example to keep calm.

I think that as long as his pain is well managed recovery should go smoothly. How has your vet proposed a pain management plan that could meet his needs? Have they given you any specifics yet?

Howdy and Merry Christmas! Max boo boo cito had his forelimb amputation 2d ago on 23Dec. Regarding his prior bouts of anxiety at night, his first overnight after amputation was at the veterinary hospital, and they did give him anxiety medication (1 dose) overnight because he was showing some symptoms. Last night we had him home, and he had some whining around midnight and again at 3am but no crashing around. Both times he calmed down after 10mins of petting (no longer on anxiety meds). Today approx 55hr post op and he is able to get up & walk fairly well unassisted around the house when he wants to move. We do use a help em up harness just to give support up & down the 2 steps needed to go outside. We have foam rubber interlocking gym floor over our hardwoods on his travel paths 🙂 Sharing in case it helps anyone else's pet that struggles with anxiety and needs amputation, Max has done very well in first 2d with less signs of anxiety than usual on his first night home. Could be he is tired, or the meds from sx still subduing his behavior...but it's not as bad as we were imagining it could be and he is adjusting well to being on 3. Max is 10yr old, 102lbs, osteosarcoma front limb amputee.

Just catching  up on your Max.  Although  it's still very early, Max seems to be doing very well!

Almost wonder if Max had some sort of undiagnosed pain that was causing  the "anxiety".  Obvi he's on good paun meds now and his anxieties  seem to have lessened.  Anyway, for whatever  the reason,  he seems to be having more nor al behavior at night now and that is great news!

Thanks for sharing Max's journey with us.  We look forward to more updates and more milestones  to celebrate.

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Wow that's fantastic! I love that you have Tripawd-proofed your house!

So glad that Max is doing really well and the anxiety isn't an issue. I think Sally's onto something, the anxiety may resolve itself now, hopefully.

Thanks for sharing, it definitely helps. Be sure to post updates in "Treatment and Recovery" or another Forum now that Max has graduated from the diagnosis phase. We'd love to follow along!
