Quick update. Cytology from the lung culture shows E. coli and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. The E. coli is resistant to the antibiotics he was on, so we have started over with a new antibiotic. Re-check is now scheduled for May 16th.

We were hoping to move ahead with surgery immediately if his scans are clear, however we have family coming into town for our daughter's graduation from May 21 - June 3. Nox gets pretty worked up when strangers are coming and going, and we are going to be running around making the most of our time with family. All of this is not conducive to stress-free healing, so I am delaying his surgery until things have settled back down again, likely June 6 or 7.

Woah! Oh my gosh poor pupperz. I agree that it's a good idea to wait on the surgery until a more calm time. As long as any pain he's in is under control and there's no risk of fracture or other dangers, it makes total sense.

Okay, looks like you are finally maki g progress and getting this issue handled.  Good job of staying on top of things!.

And absolutely agree with your assessment of waiting for a relatively  stress free enviornment  before doing the surfery.

So in the ,meantime,, have a wonderful time with family and friends celebrating  uoir daughter's graduation.

Hi everyone!

It's been a while, so I wanted to circle back with an update on Nox. He did clear his lung infection! But we realized that by the time our family was done visiting for graduation, we had a series of previously planned trips on our agenda for the summer. There was never a time when I was going be around long enough to care for him and help him adapt after surgery. I love my family, but honestly I didn't trust anyone else to do this job. So we delayed, and delayed again. In the meantime, his elbow healed, albeit badly. He cannot bear weight on the leg, but he uses it for balance checks, to point at things, and to hold toys. He also passed his 9th birthday in August. Given his age and how well he has adapted to his gimpy leg, we consulted with his vet and have decided to just let things stand as they are.

I want to thank you all for this community for all your support. I'm thankful to have found you all!

Talk about a crazy journey! What a crazy couple of months you have had! I guess for whatever reason the universe was adamant that Knox was not going to get an amputation. Goodness knows roadblocks were put up every time it was going to happen.

He’s still an unofficial tripawd family member here since he seems to be mastering the Art of three just fine. It sounds like his pain is managed and he’s back to being his feisty self. I love that he still puts that could be led to use for important things like chewing toys and pointing…. such a cute visual.

Thanks for the update. In spite of all of the hurdles, delays, etc. he seems to be living life to the fullest and that’s what it’s all about.

Aww that's good that he's holding steady and healing up. Thank you for taking time to let us know.

I agree that sometimes the best course of action is to manage things as they are. If any pain can be controlled and he is still using that leg, there's no need to jump too far ahead with surgery. Our Nellie is in the same boat, another 3.5-legger who's enjoying life and doing well.

Give your boy a big ol smooch from us OK?!
