Okay, STAY CONNECTED, Coming home the day of surgery can be rough.

Back on the soap box about pain meds....the IV isn't going to last TWO WEEKS, much less more than a day in her system. To send you home with no pain meds to supplement the IV once it wears off is just cruel! And that means you would head into the weekend with nompain meds and I presume the Vet would be closed.

You are Zuzu's advocate and you are paying them big bucks!! Try again with them. If you don't get results do you have another Vet you can go to who understands pain in dogs after MAJOR sjrgery!?

Ask the Vet how they would like being in for MAJOR surgery to have their whole leg cut off and basically jist given aspirin! Sorry, don't m3an to upset you but this just boggles my mind how some Vets still think when it comes to managing pain in dogs

Sally,
Zuzu isn't having an amputation. She's having the tumor removed and a skin flap used for closure over the knee. With that being said, I'm still not happy about the pain meds. They are open on Saturdays so there will still be that option, at least for the first half of the weekend.

Ohhhhh.....soooo embarrassed!!! And I DID know that!!! Hard to believe, but I DID know that!!

Wish I could blame it on typos!!! I think it's more like DUH!! Just plain DUH!!blushaw-shucksblush

After several uears on here with almost everything being an amputation, my mind just switches over to "amputation".

Okay, sounds like you have EVERYTHING under control! And definitely the pain management sounds like a good plan.

Gotta go find a big rock now to hide under for awhile...or a year or two!!

Lol, no worries Sally! I know it's automatic for our minds to go to amputation on this site. No need to hide under any rocks!

Found out when we dropped her off (she should be in surgery now) that the iv med is rimydal. Really wish they were giving her something stronger than just an anti inflammatory, but I keep getting told "oh it's a pain med too", just have a hard time believing its doing a whole lot for pain based on my own experiences with anti-inflammatory.

They said she'd be ready to pick up in 4 to 5 hrs(from now) and my sister is letting is use her car since it's a little lower and will be easier to get her in.

So thankful for all the help from everyone.

Ok everyone, quick update...
My wife just heard from the vet, surgery went very very well. Although the mass appeared to be over the knee joint, it was actually lower than what everyone thought-this means.... No skin flap!! clapclap
She was able to get the wound closed without too much pulling on the sutures and feels confident that she has a good, strong closure and range of motion tests looked great!

I couldn't wait to share the news, but will be posting more in a few hours after we collect our puppers.

Alright everypawdy, we are home! Well, our temporary home at least.
Zuzu's surgery went very well, better than expected. The tumor was lower than the knee joint so we were able to get good closure without the need for a skin flap!
Doc says she got good margins (I of course forgot to ask how wide as I was so excited when we picked her up-will make sure to ask)

Surgery lasted about an hour and a half, she did great with anesthesia. They gave her hydromorphone injection and a nerve block as well as IV rimydal. They said they used the laser after as well, since they see great improvement in healing with it.

After surgery she was giving everyone a laugh. She would suddenly and randomly howl for a few seconds, then stop and look at everyone like " what? That wasn't me". The first time she did it it scared the doc so bad she almost fell out of her chair! Then she would be quiet just long enough for people to forget or someone new to walk in the back and the whole thing would start again- so adorable!

So the door to the back of the clinic has a window in it, so we were able to see Zuzu as she was being brought up to us. She was hobbling along, not putting much weight on her back leg but WAS walking. They came through the door and she saw us and then she acted like she couldn't walk! She did trip on the slick floor and have a fall- poor baby. When she fell her wound started seeping. It looked like straight up blood so the tech went and got the doc to look at it, she came out and said it was ok, that it was gonna do that and not to be too worried about it unless it started showing signs of infection.
We then had the techs help us get her in the car. We get home and guess what- she won't walk, won't even stand and is just letting her legs collapse. I wasn't too worried cuz I just saw her walking and even the techs that helped us were giving her a hard time about pretending not to be mobile in front of us.

So, because they didn't do the belly flap we were able to use the get a grip harness supplied to us by tripawds. We got it on and lifted her out of the back of the car- still wouldn't put her damn feet down so we ended up awkwardly carrying her through the parking lot and down the steps and into the apartment.

After about a half hour inside we decided to take the cone off,I know I know it's there for a reason, however we are within arm's reach of her and she has at minimum two sets of eyes on her constantly. She was finally calming down and resting after the cone removal.

She's been pretty calm, a little bit of whining, but not too bad. She wasn't much interested in drinking, so we put some beef broth in her water, and that send to help some. She's also had a bit to eat. We tried going outside once, but wasn't interested in doing anything. She did pee for the techs before we picked her up, so as long as she goes in the morning I think we're good.

It's now 230am and zuzu is wide awake and whining like crazy. I thought it was because I put the cone on so I could go to sleep, so I took it off to see if the whining would stop. It did for a while, now she's back to it. This is also about the time her hospital meds are wearing off. She's not panting, not breathing heavy, but did get up and move around a little. Not sure if that's her showing pain or if it's more of a " trying to get comfortable" sort of deal. She does stop whining as soon as I pet her and gets a smile on her face. It should be noted that zuzu likes to whine for attention and to get her way. If this continues the rest of the night, we'll be calling the vet first thing in the morning.

YAY for Zuzu being home!

But oh wow so from the time you wrote this until the time we chatted this afternoon it sounds like things have gotten better? I hope so!

Did she start relaxing more? Were you able to come up with a way to help her chill? Yeah, the pain meds and her inability to get comfortable can make her a little anxious and more attention-seeking than usual. Use your gut feeling and if you think that her behavior is other than typical, call your vet OK? Don't hesitate to call, that's why you pay them.

As for the cone...yeah, animals are sneaky. We've heard of lots of stitches coming out in seconds when the human looked the other way. Better safe than sorry so do keep it on. Stay strong, you can do it!

I'm glad you got to use the harness and hope it keeps helping.

Zuzu is much much better today. She even pooped for us about an hour ago. Yay poo!

I am extremely confident that her whining was more attention seeking than pain. As soon as my wife woke up and started giving Zuzu attention her whining basically stopped. So I guess last night was one of those times that I just wasn't good enough and she wanted #1 Mommy.

The cone will be used tonight, whether she likes it or not. We can't afford an infection and even though she gets super anxious, she's gonna have to deal with it. We will look into medical intervention if the anxiety produces results similar to last night, but I'm crossing my fingers that tonight goes a bit smoother.

Initially Zuzu didn't want to use her leg, but is putting more and more weight on it as the day has progressed. I was starting to get a little nervous that she didn't want to use it. I think part of the problem is getting stiff with so much lying around. She has also started beefing the knee a bit more, compared to just leaving it straight.

I have pictures, but have to wait until I'm on the computer- posting pictures from my phone is just a bit too difficult.

I have an 11 year-old husky mix who had the same cancer 18 months ago, and came upon your post by chance on my first visit to this site. I feel for you tonight- but things will get better fast!

Our dog came as a foster with no history, and shortly after we adopted her we found out she had soft tissue sarcoma.  Hers had progressed badly enough that the underlying radius bone was compromised and amputation was necessary.

The good news? 18 months later, she is in fine shape and has had no recurrence, just as our vet predicted. She has an excellent life post-cancer, and Zuzu will too. Best of luck to all of you!

Thanks so much! Last night was a huge improvement, even with the cone on, we (mostly) slept through the night! She was up a few times to adjust but overall did so, so much better, and her"preferred" momma wasn't even here!

I'm so glad we were able to get to Zuzu's before there was any Bone involvement. I know amputation is the curative option, but I'm really happy we're able to go this route first, I think it's a good option for zuzu and our situation. Hopefully biopsy results aren't too bad and we can count this sucker out for a while. No matter what our days will be filled with yummy treats, long walks (once approved), lots of scratches and cuddles and infinite praises.

She looks GREAT! To see how she has all that energy right now, well that's really cool!

Of course you are happy not to amputate, I would be too. Nobody wants their pup to lose a leg and taking the least invasive option first is always smart. You are great pet parents. Keep it up.

This is a great reminder to ALWAYS get a second opinion if you're not happy with or concerned about the recommendations made.
We called 8 or 9 different offices and no one would even entertain this less invasive option. They all basically told us it was pointless to even try this route.

Thank dog for Dr Bausch and her confidence in her abilities and knowledge. I'm sure we could have found a specialist that would have entertained this option, but realistically that wasn't an option for us.

Just so glad that things went well and the first 2 days are very promising.
