Hello to all...
Our little bichon did not have surgery, but she did dislocate a hip yesterday and has one leg taped up to her body (for a few weeks). She seemed like she wanted to poop today, but just started circling a little and stopped (she's only peed so far).
My question is, do the dogs usually figure out the pooping on three legs thing after the first 24 hours? She had anasthesia when the hip was put back into place, but it was pretty quick (don't think she was out for even an hour).

My dog Buster had to figure things out at first, maintaining his balance, since he is male .... They get the hang of it. The surgery and the drugs they use slow down their system and they get constipated. I was told canned tuna in oil works after surgery. I use pureed canned pumpkin, recommended by other pawrents, it is a natural regulator. I just mix it with his food. I had to hand feed him at first to encourage him to eat and to help stimulate his appetite. His surgery was 2hrs long & it took about 2 weeks or so to get him back to regular...

Anothe factor to consider which our vet told us about is that the hip (and politely, toosh) muscles are a little "tied up" so it may hurt a bit to strain. He recommended linseed oil (from the chemist, not the paint store!) and even a nice room temperature bowl of milk.

Thanks for the tip! I assume you would give this orally ... Any idea what kind of dosage? I'd hate to think what might happen if you gave too much! Yuck.

Er, I'll check that out. For Lalla the Lab it was about a tbspn. She seemed to like it actually.
Dislocated hip...oouch! got to hurt. As for my experience I did spend a few days after surgery were I didn't go pooo poooo but my mom also tried the canned pumpkin and also the milk and they worked fine. Had not heard about the linseed oil but it is good to know for future reference. Thanks Lalla. Wishing you a quick recovery...

PS I've also tried mineral oil for faster results.... but I would be home with my pet. It works fast and too much can leave an oily residue. At least your pet won't have his bowels bound up. I don't know what's more painful? The recovery or the pain of constipation....LOL I know it's not a joke but I'm just recalling the initial few days after his surgery. It was stressful....hang in there!
