Did anyone else have to treat a large scab that formed over the incision site? Our cat Progo (front right leg amputation at the end of November) had his stitches removed a few weeks ago, but our primary care vet was a bit concerned about the size of his scab that ran along the long "leg" of the T-shaped scar. She didn't want us to do anything to it at the time, so we kept an eye on it. The past few days, it began peeling back at the edges, and today it is starting to look a little red and oozy on one edge. I put a baby shirt on him, much to his annoyance. Now the primary care vet is suggesting we do warm compresses a couple times a day and see if we can "potentially" slowly peel it off, and "hopefully" there won't be signs of infection underneath. I'm nervous about pulling on the scab.

Just wondering if anyone else has had to do similar.

I had a dog and she had a scab on hers but she was 138 pounds and was a right rear amputee.  The best we could figure out was she was pushing off with that part of the incision when trying to get up.  My vet gave me zinc cream or something that helped with the slight oozing in that one spot.  I will see if I can find the name of it but the problem with zinc for cats you can't use it.  So that won't help 🙁   Sassy never licked anything so I didn't have to worry about that.

Sorry I wasn't more of help

Eeeek! I'd be nervous too. We dealt with incision scabs but they fell off naturally. Have you used anything like Vetericyn on it to help it heal?

Just wanted to update that, after a few days of warm compresses and it gradually peeling up at the edges by itself, one morning the scab was gone. What was left was a smaller, bright red wound, but it didn't look infected to our vet (I texted her a picture), so I put the cone back on him for a few days until a new, much smaller, scab formed. Then I let him out of the cone again, And now he has no noticeable scab and the fur has regrown quite a bit. Whew!
