Hello! I was hoping that someone could give me some information, and possibly, words of hope. Our 13 year old doberman had his right rear leg amputated a week ago tomorrow due to cancer. How soon should he be getting up and hopping around on his own?

We are happy to share our experience and hope too!

Tell us more about your pup. Sorry I know I have more questions than answers right now but the more we know about him the better we can help. Is Schultz his name? What was his mobility like before amputation? And what kind of pain medication is he on now (medication name, dosage amount and timing)? Is he able to stand, eat/drink and do his business? Do you have slippery floors in your home that he may be reluctant to walk on?

Every dog is different and oftentimes senior dogs can take a week or so longer than younger dogs to recover, depending on what their mobility was like before surgery. A week still isn't a long time but if his lack of mobility is concerning, I would definitely let your vet know what's going on. He could be having untreated pain, maybe a suture is bothering him, anything is possible. But the good news is most dogs will get back on the road to recovery quickly once a diagnosis is made.

I'm not sure if that's hopeful or not but either way do fill us in so we can learn all about you and your boy!

Thanks for responding to my cry for helpful advice!  Schultz was getting around pretty well, however, since just this last month of January he started to show a lack of wanting to put weight on his right rear leg.  X-rays revealed possible cancer in his femur.  A bone biopsy confirmed cancer, however, they could not pinpoint a specific type or site of origination thus they wanted to amputate the entire leg.  He has always been very healthy and is currently on the following pain meds:  Rimadyl 75 mg once a day and Gabapentin 100mg 2 capsules twice a day or every 8-12 hours.  He is also finishing his antibiotic:  Cefpodoxime 100mg tonight.  He currently weighs 75pounds, was 84 pounds and not over weight. He's a big boy.

You bet, that's why we are here. Thanks for filling us in.

Hmmm. I'm not a vet, but that dosage appears to be exceptionally low for a dog his size. As an example, our Wyatt Ray was 75 pounds and he was on 400 mg 3x daily for pain management maintenance. A more common dosage for large dog during amputation recovery starts at 300 mg 3x daily. So please talk to your vet about upping the dosage. It could be that Schultz is suffering from untreated post amputation pain. This is one of the most common situations we see here.

Also, please consider getting him to a canine rehabilitation therapist. It's so beneficial to have him evaluated so you can learn what he is capable of during recovery and after, and also how to keep him strong. They can help with pain control too. And the best part is the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit ! So please take advantage of the program asap.

Just checking in on your sweet boy Schulz.   Yeah, mobil can take a bit longer with mature big dogs.

How is he doing overall as far as eating, drinking, pottying?  Resting comfortably?

Dobie's are such great dogs.  We look forward to pictures!

Schultz is improving each day.  Today he took steps without assistance, although I was terrified that he might fall, he did it!  He is eating, drinking, and doing all of his business.  Thank you for mentioning rehabilitation, we have been wondering if there was a form of doggy physical therapy that we should be conducting since his rear leg is weak from almost 2 weeks of bed rest.  I'll try to send pics/video soon!

Thank you for all of the support!  The tripawds site is such a terrific place to visit and see all of the successful stories and to be able to read through the trials that others are and have gone through.  I would love to be able to share my experience with pictures and possibly short videos, but I cannot figure out where I need to go in the site to upload them.  I do see the camera and video link on this note, but the source box is new to me.  Any help would be great.

Thanks for the kind words, that makes our hearts hoppy!

This is how adding images to the Forums works.

  1. Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog!
  2. Right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
  3. Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.

If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know! I'm happy to give you a tutorial via Chat or Zoom.

Thanks!  I gave it a try and failed.  Oh well, I'll try again another day.  At this time I have a different question.  Schultz has finished all of his pain pills, is this something that he should be getting refills on?  Also, I spoke to his doctor about the dosage and he felt that it was appropriate so we didn't change it.

I’m happy to help with photos, message me!

As for Schultz, is he showing any pain signals ? If so then yes, note his symptoms and have a convo with your vet to discuss possibly prolonging his prescription.

Thanks!  He seems fine, but he has a sore that he wants to keep licking and it looks like a bed sore.  This "itch" I believe causes him to have trouble sleeping the entire night through.  We just started putting an antibiotic ointment on it and are more strict with his cone of shame . He almost has standing up from laying down conquered.  He can go potty without assistance ( I always worry about him falling back into his business).  He's eating, but probably not drinking enough water.  How much food should we be feeding him daily?  Right now he gets one full can of wet food - he likes Blue Wilderness Wolf.  He also gets about a cup of dry food, a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of boiled chicken and about 1/4 cup or less of cottage cheese.  He enjoys a dental bone (I gave him a whole bone today, he had been getting 1/2 of a bone) and he thinks that the freeze dried chicken snacks are crack!  Even the cats are begging for it!  Oh, he also gets Chondroitin for his joints.

Thank you so much for providing your thoughts, your experience is very comforting.

Oh yeah an itch like that could be causing some anxiety. Good move to keep the cone on and monitor the spot so he doesn't lick it. Where is the sore?

It does sound like he's making progress. You can up his liquid intake by adding no-sodium broth to his dry food, or spiking his water dish with some of it, or even Gatorade. Anything that will tempt him to drink. Otherwise his appetite sounds like it's improving. As for an amount to feed, whatever his usual amount is what you should stick to, while keeping in mind that a slim Tripawd enjoys much better mobility than one who isn't, so don't over-feed in the name of recovery.

And remember, if he falls back into the bushes when he pottys, he will get back up without thinking twice. It's us the humans who always panic and make things worse!
