I adopted Munson on Thursday, and he's my little tripawd baby. He goes to see his vet Tuesday and I am really thinking about getting insurance because of my other baby having so many health issues and emergencies. He's 7 now and under good regimen, though pre-existing conditions are not applicable, he's not a candidate for insurance. There are so many companies! I just want to make sure if something happens to Munson that no matter what we'll be financially prepared for it!! Please let me know any experiences you may have and even recommendations!
Healthy Paws, Healthy Paws, Healthy Paws!!!! We signed up about 7 months before Lily was diagnosed-she was 8 at the time--about $45 a month. They pay 90% of covered expenses-not the vet's visit and there's no limit. The deductible is $250.00 yearly. They cover physical therapy and accupunture, etc. They call to see how Lily is doing, and the check is in the mail within 2-3 days. I can't rave enough about them!!

Don't know about pre-existing conditions, but most insurances don't cover-worth a call.
Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.
We have a great interview with a pet insurance expert here:
How to Choose the Best Pet Insurance Policy
Insurance is smart. We have it for Tripawds Spokespup Wyatt Ray and it's come in handy. The premiums for a 7-yr old dog might be high but still less than what you would pay for expensive vet care. Just remember to shop around: every company has different rates for different dogs. What works and is affordable for one may not be the same for another. Just do your research and ask loads of questions so you'll feel good about paying for it.
Good luck! Let us know what you find.

Thank you for bringing up this topic; someone at work just asked me the other day about it. I'd checked a few years ago when my employer offered it when the company partnered with one of the pet insurance companies. I did the online app and the system crashed when I tried to input the 3rd pre-existing condition on my first dog - and she was the younger and healthier one! Pointless to try for Tripawd Princess Roxie, but a good time to revisit the plans while my quad GSD is still young and healthy!!

I am thinking about switching companies but I am very glad that I had pet insurance with Schmoozer. He's across the bridge now, but insurance definitely made a difference. He was severely epileptic and it covered a mri and many of his treatments.
That being said, be sure to read the fine print and be ready to have to explain things to your insurance company.
I understand that with all companies you're supposed to have 30 days to get your money back if you change your mind. Let us know!

Canceled VPI and took Healthy paws.. 27.70/month with 90% coverage and a $250 deductible.. I discovered VPI only pays so much per incident.. I asked about a torn acl.. and they only covered $2300.. not worth my money!! Healthy paws has no limit, and they got rave reviews.. If I have any experiences I will definitely pass them along!

...it looks like anything that happens related to his missing leg won't be covered?
That depends on the policy, reason for amputation, and condition causing the claim. We have insurance for Wyatt, and his amputation is not considered a pre-existing condition, but his was the result of neglect, not cancer.
