Hello,

Our beloved Momo, a 13 years old while mixed lab, had her rear leg amputated last November (2014) due to cancer.

She was doing pretty good (walking, running slowly and swimming) until last week where we found that she do not excited to go to the park. We thought that she's in pain noticing heavy breathing and gave her 1/2 chewable (50mg) Rimadyl once a day. Still she could walk and go out to do her things. We took her to the pet hospital where they didn't find anything special and prescribed her Rimadyl (1/2 pill every 12 hours), Tramadol (50mg every 12 hours) and 1mL Gabapentin (every 24 hours) as pain relief. They suggested that if it won't help in few day, bring her over for X-ray.

Two days ago (5 days after our first visit) we've noticed that she cannot walk anymore, not able to use her only one rear leg. She didn't show any special pain signals except breathing heavily. The same night we took her to the pet hospital, they checked her up, did some X-rays but couldn't see any substantial issue so they refer us to another hospital (the one that did her amputation) to see a surgeon.

Next morning (yesterday) we took her to see the surgeon, they check her up (including a Neurologist) and did more X-ray but couldn't find any issue. They say she may injured herself and she'll recover and again, more pain medications.

She still cannot walk and won't even try to use her rear leg, does not show pain when we're stretching her leg but now she won't even eat and refuses to take her medication.

Any idea what to do? She can't even go to the bathroom

Thank you so much for any advice.

Sorry to hear about Momo! Your future forum posts will not require moderation.

We strongly suggest you consult with a certified canine rehab tech (CCRP or CCRT ). They are specifically trained to identify the cause of orthopedic issues , can work wonders, and the Tripawds Foundation is currently offering reimbursement for a limited number of first consultations to those who qualify.

Welcome and best wishes, please keep us posted!

First of all....YAAAAAAAAAY FOR MOMO!!! A very senior pup....a tripawd for a year...blowing statistics sky high...STANDING OVATION!!!

Have you tried a harness or towel sling to help her stand? If she has injured her good legs, pain meds, anti-inflammatory and complete rest are the best treatment. It sounds like for a senior tripawd she may have been overdoing it. Of course, with this stupid piece of crap disease there coukd be things going on that aren't showing up. Sounds like the vets are covering all the bases though.

Sorry I'm not much help, but just want to send support and encouragement.

Hugs to you and Momo....and we would love to see some pictures of this cutie!

Hi Momo's Family,

It is certainly good that she is not showing pain. But it must be very distressing that she is unable to walk or even take care of her business. We had a previous (non-tripawd) dog who was also not able to do her business. We were taught by the vets how to help her pee and poo. It isn't hard and it might give her enough time to recover if it is just an injury of some kind. It helps if she is small and light enough that you could carry her outside to do it. You also have to be careful about keeping the skin clean, especially w/ urine.

I hope you are able to get some answers for what is wrong w/ your beloved Momo soon.

Denise, Bill and Angel Ellie.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
