About a year ago I rescued a 35lb pit mix with a missing left hind paw, she's two years old now. Ginger is missing the paw right below the hock joint. Every vet she has seen comments on how they would not have amputated that low. It was healed pretty well when I adopted her. She is a very energetic and active animal who loves walks and chasing squirrels in the backyard; the problem is that she almost always ends up bleeding from her stump after every walk. She has been obsessed with exploring the back yard lately and I'm worried because her stump is starting to look more and more cut up when she comes in. Ginger is young and hyper, so I'd like her to be active; I'm wondering what I should do to keep her from hurting herself every time she goes outside (and leaving blood stains around the house)? I've tried covering the stump a bunch of different ways, and nothing has worked.

Hi Carolyn, thanks for joining us here. Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

I'm sorry that Ginger's stump is giving her problems. Unfortunately, that's pretty common in a lot of dogs and cats with partial amputations. We wish more vets would talk to the parent / rescue about the pros and cons before doing the surgery. Typically the only way to fix it is to have an amputation correction (a second surgery) to remove the entire limb. Here's an article that explains more:

Have you had her evaluated by an orthopedic / prosthetics expert to see if she's a good candidate for a prosthetic leg?

Sorry your photo upload didn't work.

This is how adding images to the Forums works.
