Hello

My 11 year old Patterdale terrier was diagnosed with bone cancer in March and subsequently had one of his rear limbs removed.  He was instantly ok on 3 legs so that's ok and was just like a puppy again, I guess free from pain.  This week however he has stopped attempting to climb our stairs - I guess fair enough because maybe he is feeling the strain on that 1 back leg.  Although the difficulty with cancer is its hard to tell if it is spreading.  I've massaged his body including remaining legs and he doesn't pull away or yelp so I think that's a good sign.  His lungs sound ok too.  I am going off the point - the stairs.  Can anyone recommend a good harness for a small dog for lifting up the stairs in into and out of cars.  I found the ruffwear site but its talking about quite a large posting cost from US to UK so not sure about that.  I have bought a sling type thing from Goodideas but its not made specifically for tripod dogs and looks like he could easily fall out of it - didn't feel stable when we used it last night.

I would really appreciate any recommendations for harnesses for dogs.

Thanks

Jules

Hi Jules, thanks for joining us! We are so glad you did, even though you're dealing with bone cancer, I'm so sorry. What kind of cancer did Obi get diagnosed with?

When it comes to Obi's strength and stamina, have you tried any kind of rehab therapy program with him? Strengthening a dog's core muscles is critical for helping to navigate things like stairs, go on longer walks, etc. Our Tripawds e-book, Loving Life on Three Legs, has tons of great tips about how to start a program, stay strong and healthy. Also, our Gear blog has tons of tips, like this: Best of Tripawds Gear and Fitness Tips.

OK about the Webmaster; we've found that it's the best harness for rear or front leg amputees. As far as we know, nobody has created a harness just for a dog missing a leg. We've talked to manufacturers about this but it would be quite a challenge. So for now, we continuously scout out harnesses to see which offer the best value, and the ones that we've found are here in our Gear blog :

Best Harnesses for Three-Legged Dogs

You can definitely order direct from a distributor in the UK, a link is found here.

I hope this helps. We can't wait to see photos of Obi! Here are instructions. Kudos to you for giving him a new chance at life, he sounds like overall he's doing so great.
