Hi Everyone!
I recently (as in 11 days ago) adopted a sweet dog missing her front left leg named Lovegood. She's a 5 year old Anatolian Shepherd cross and is already developing arthritis and hip problems because of her unusual gait. I'm considering getting her a front support wheelchair to assist with mobility and balance during exercise. Specifically, this one.
Lovegood is physically able to get around on three legs, but can't go on walks for more than about 10 minutes without being exhausted and her hips appear to cause her some pain. I want to help her but am not sure if this is the right way and I'd really appreciate some feedback about wheelchairs for tripods. Thanks!

Hi Fiona,
You're pretty pawesome for adopting that sweetheart. Anatolians are incredible dogs. We have one here who is a five year osteosarcoma survivor and he's amazing! His name is Cemil and he's still going strong. Check out his story.
It sounds like Lovegood could use an evaluation by a certified veterinary rehab therapist. Do you have any idea what her background is as far as her health and how she was treated? How long has she been a Tripawd? If her humans didn't monitor her activity, she may be slow because of years of neglect in that department. If you're inclined please check out our ebook, Loving Life on 3 Legs, which explains why rehab vets are so important for helping Tripawds live longer, healthier pain free lives.
Now about the wheelchair . I wouldn't go there yet until you have her evaluated. With regular rehab care (something you can do at home as well once you have homework from a vet), many dogs are able to get strong and fit again and don't need one. While giant breeds have their own unique challenges, she could very likely see a lot of improvement without needing that chair. If you still think she does, here's an article we wrote called "How a Dog Wheelchair Can Help a Tripawd" which will give you some insight.
Thanks so much for joining us, we look forward to hearing all about your adventures together!

And Sid has been a tripod for 6 1/2 years! Not osteosarcoma, but a shattered hock.
We've been looking at wheelchairs but it seems that many of the really good-looking ones are in the US (and we're not). I like the look of the Ruff-Rollin carts. They seem very sturdy and fairly easy to use. Good luck getting one to suit Lovegood - I love the name, by the way!
